Discuss The USC-BYU Game

What to say?

The fanboy media is treating it like a victory. And tonight’s performance was better than vs. UCLA.

But how frustrating on fourth down is it to see Graham Harrell call a pass play that doesn’t even get past the first-down marker?

And why did it take until Game 11 to see some younger faces?

USC is mercifully not bowl eligible. The season needs to end. And a coach needs to be hired. The USC fans are getting surly as some candidates seem to fall by the wayside.

  1. The USC Coaches didn’t help USC. The home crowd didn’t help USC (and was actually drowned out by the BYU fans). The refs sure as hell didn’t help USC –they blew two calls that led to BYU scores. And Hunter Echols didn’t help USC by lazily trotting off the field during a substitution —leading to 3 BYU points being taken off the scoreboard & replaced by 7 points.
Even when things looked good you couldn’t quite imagine USC actually winning. And the cardinal metaphysical rule of football is that teams only pull off upsets when their fans BELIEVE.

  2. When will Bohn and Folt realize they need a big name coach to get people to return to the Coliseum again, and they will have to pay alot more money than they anticipated to get someone to come here.

When will they also realize that an empty Coliseum means their jobs might be in jeopardy due to the fact USC football use to be the 1 sport that brought in revenue for the University.

Dart impressed me tonight with his competitive fire. We need to recruit more players like him.

  3. Moral victories are for losers. A record of 4-8 at a school like USC is unacceptable, no matter what the circumstance. This team has talent. Talent that was undeveloped to their fullest potential, and that falls on the adults. Folt and Bohn knew exactly what an incompetent fools Helton and his staff are. Instead of being proactive and bringing in a competent head coach and staff, Folt/Bohn took the easy way out by hiring a cast-off in Orlando and other periphery staff that is all style and no substance, and we all saw the final result of this thinking tonight. These kids deserved a lot better, and Folt/Bohn better get their shit together and make this right.

      1. Yes, Charles it is well said. It’s the very reason any good or very good Coach is going to avoid USC like the plague.
The can see there is NO ADMINISTRATION SUPPORT for the program…..

  4. Has anyone noticed this year how small our lineman, and linebackers looked compared to the other teams we have played. I mean tonight our lineman looked like high school players when lined up against Utah.

We use to be bigger, and faster than most teams we played not any longer.

    1. Totally agree!
My teams from 1966-70 were bigger and more aggressive.
USC was out gunned from the start..
They do look like high school players.
I thought some tackles were made by DB’s
But they were really undersized LB’s.
      Absolutely poor recruiting for position.
This is “unacceptable”as my coach, John McKay would say!

      1. We were outmanned —we didn’t have our stars at receiver or running back…and we definitely got jobbed by the Pac 12 refs (who apparently were told it’s important BYU get an opportunity for a top bowl since USC isn’t going anywhere). But…in spite of all that… USC fought hard for 60 minutes and gave their remaining fans a few occasions to actually cheer something related to college football that was going on inside the coliseum.

  5. Seems like Mike Bohn is screwing up the hiring process for our new football coach by focusing on just 1 to 3 Hot candidates who really don’t want to move.

Pat Narducci at Pitt has silently done a great job rebuilding that program. Mr. Bohn you should give this guy an interview. Very solid defensive minded coach who was quite successful at Michigan State for many years.

  6. Mike Bohn………how many of these candidates have you really interview? Too many of these hot candidates your going after are 1 year wonders we need a guy that can build a solid, tough, consistent program.

Pat Narducci at Pitt should be interviewed. Solid coach who has done a fantastic job of rebuilding the football program at Pitt. Was the top defensive coordinator for many years at Michigan State under Mark De Antoni. Tough guy, and knows how to rebuild a football program.

USC’s main problem the last 10 years has been a lack of balanced recruiting on both sides of the ball, and not having a defensive minded head coach.

  8. WSU kept their coach, he did a damn good job taking over for Rolo.

USC will never look at Fresno’s coach, the Hoi Polloi ? HA !

So if Campbell balks, Aranda stays, Fickell waits on ND and stays at Cinn, who do we have left ?

Take Tater Tot from ND ? Hmmm.

USC is supposed to be one of the top 5 jobs in college football, yet, when it comes to trying to get a coach, no one seems to want the job or uses USC to get better deals.

Folt doesn’t care if the Coli is empty, the BOT doesn’t care, USC football is D E A D

    1. Dead? Not yet. But if Bohn thinks he can get this done with smiles and a few phone calls…and he continues looking at the same sampling of indifferent candidates (as in “indifferent toward us”) …. it will become official by mid December…

  9. HEADLINE NEWS: Clueless President Folt tweets that football season is over!
Midnight call from Mike Caruso to Carol Folt: “Carol you need to delete that tweet about our football season being over. College teams play 12 games, remember?”
Carol: “But I told Mike Bohn to tell everybody I’m cancelling the last game.”
Caruso: “That’s the first I heard of it.”
Carol: “Well I see I’ve got my work cut out for me.”

  10. It was great to see Dart’s fire and competitiveness. Still plenty of talent on this team, and one can rebuild faster with the portal. Next fall will be much better.

Whoever comes better bring a defensive coordinator who can implement
D-I-S-C-I-P-L-I-N-E. I’ve never seen “14 men on the field”.

Neither “half” has ever been part of USC football.

Play 100% effort and focus, or go home.

  12. Now, that is what I am talking about. Entertainment, drama, going
down-to-the-wire ending. Win or lose, I will take last night’s game over any game where SC wipes out the other school (That has happened, hasn’t it?).

Anyway, ha-ha-ha. I salute all the bettors that bet against SC. Shame on you, may you never commit that sin–again.

And so this idea of BYU coming to LA. to pound SC into the Coliseum turf was but a mere myth. I half-expected a scene out of “King Kong” whereby Kong is pounding on the villagers flimsy gate, biting at the bit to get them.

    Oh well, such is life.

      1. Folt was hired to be Caruso’s puppet, there was no other reason to hire a fired chancellor who couldnt even navigate a stupid statue issue.

The core problem with USC all comes down to a dysfunctional BOT that has a dictator for chairman.

At what point do administrators have to report on their results? Cleaning up the messes left by Nikias should be Job 1 and should be complete. So what are they accomplishing now? Where is the leadership?

  13. MESSAGE FROM CAROL FOLT TO UNIVERSITY:
“Last night I referred to the BYU game as our last of the season. I did this because all I know about the schedule is what I read on our out of date 2021 Football Schedule Website. I guess I should try to keep better informed.
I might as well use this as an opportunity to explain why I kept Clay Helton and rejected Urban Meyer. Clay stayed on cuz I asked him if everything was going alright and he said yes. I rejected Urban cuz I skimmed over a New Your Times article about some domestic disputes he was maybe supposed to report. The article made me mad so I decided Urban was toxic.
I guess you could say I dealt with all these matters as superficialities —just like I’ve been doing since my City College days in Santa Barbara.”

  14. This game proved to me that USC has the athletic talent, it is just horribly mismanaged by the coaching staff. The core problem is Graham Harrell and the ridiculous air raid offense. But the defense has been equally mismanaged by TO.

What I take away is that with good coaching and solid offensive scheme Dart will be incredible next year and the following year. We need to put the right receivers on the field and have them run the right routes. We need to fire Colbert because he just isnt coaching them up. Tah Washington gets no YAC and isnt a good receiver. Where have Michael Jackson and Joseph Manjack been all season? Gary Bryant is not really the quality of receiver we need as our primary weapon.

The offensive line has improved dramatically since last year. McGuire deserves alot of credit. This is the #1 recruiting need of USC for the coming year. We need a top coach and need to lock in 3-4 excellent o-line prospects.

The defense is going to need some real player development, but if Brandon Pili, Ishamael Sopsher are healthy, Korey Foreman gets coached up and we get a few top d-line recruits, that might be OK. There is a ton of talent in the secondary, but they really need to be coached to not blow their coverage assignments. I wonder if a new coach will keep So’Oto and if he might be able to get Mykel Williams to re-commit?

I dont think Matt Campbell has as much upside potential as I want, but he also has a high floor, so this team could compete for Pac-12 championship as early as next year under him. Maybe I am wrong about him, I just dont know.

But if we dont have a coach already locked in, then Bohn and Sosna have really messed up this coaching search. Big time. Why fire Clay in the second game if they were going to allow the team to be mismanaged by TO and GH and then wait until there is more competition for coaches to sign a head coach? I hope they have been keeping it all secret and we are all surprised.

    1. Really good insights, gametv. You’d think —since we’re an AIR RAID Offense— the receivers would know how to run routes. You’d also think we’d have learned before last night that Jackson and Manjack are football players and they don’t give up on passes just cuz someone has a hand in their face when the ball is on the way…even if they aren’t the 5 stars Harrell loves.
You’d also think that Bohn would be able to make a “there will be an announcement shortly” announcement sometime this weekend. If he’s not in position to do that he’s a bigger clown than we think he is.
And, yes, credit to the o-line and our o-line coach. The evolution from zero to effective is something to cheer about. And so was the play of our backup tailbacks. They played their hearts out. And, as all here have note, they deserved better from their coaches.
Donte doesn’t even know when he’s getting jobbed by the refs. Even the announcers were surprised at the amount of crooked shit he didn’t seem to even notice. [At least he remembers to give every winning coach a big hug and kiss at the end of the game —just in case he has to ask them for a job in December].

      1. In some ways I feel sorry for Donte and in other ways his performance does look like he has been incompetent. But mostly, I feel he should have demanded the right to fire Harrell. Jinks would have been a better solution than Harrell (Mr. I wont change). I assume that Donte is the one who demanded more run game.

I am baffled by why the defense has been so pathetic this year and why the secondary is such a mess. It seems like the players blow coverages every other play, but when they are in a position to make the play, they make some very good plays. So my guess is that this is all about schematics and teaching assignments, which is a coordinator issue (my guess).

I am afraid that we might learn that Bohn really is a clown and mismanaged this search from the beginning. Competence doesnt seem to be a pre-requisite for USC administration jobs.

    2. Orlando and Harrell could kill Alabama if they were allowed in. Terminate those guys and that will give you 4 more wins a year, min. This team should have gone something like 10-2. Should have.

  15. But I still think that any really good coach can come here and lock in a top recruiting class and contend for the Pac-12 title next year. With good coaching and schematics, Dart is going to be very fun to watch. That BYU game gave me hope.

    1. Second half offense looked good for the most part. Lots of potential. Dart is a gamer. Glad to see VM get plenty of touches and deliver. This team is one good hire away from contending soon. The key is “good” hire.

If they don’t like a post maybe they need to put up some community standards. I have never under any iteration of my posting name been warned or admonished to stop doing whatever it is I did. I don’t believe there is a moderator this is just a poor man’s excuse for a blog where you have to prove you are who you say you are every time you post.
Say what you want the season was over in game three. USC’s Title IX department isn’t equal or fair. And according to Folt the season is over.

  17. After getting my BS and MBA from USC, I was always proud of the university; however, after watching the team go down the tubes over the years since Pete left and all of the scandals surrounding the university. USC has now become a total embarrassment. After always trying to explain the scandals and the poor performance of the football team while on a trip to China, in 2018 to other tourists. I replace wearing my USC cap and always wear my USMC cap where tradition and “Semper Fi” really mean something instead of all the fancy USC media hype and “bull shit” we get from the administration.
