Let’s Renew USC-Oklahoma Series

I’m ready to propose that USC and Oklahoma play a home-and-home series in the interest of college football. It would certainly draw a huge TV rating.

There’s been some great USC-Oklahoma games in the past so why not renew the tradition?

Did it get better than when No. 1 USC played No. 2 Oklahoma in 1981?

Fred Cornwell enjoys catching winning TD in 1981. No. 1 USC defeated No. 2 Oklahoma, 28-24.

Imagine the interest if Lincoln Riley returned to Norman, Okla., for a game?

Jack Del Rio hits Kelly Phelps during the 1982 USC-Oklahoma game.

      1. Yesterday U,

That would be great to have. However, I would want Riley to have at least one year under his belt at SC before the game. Maybe scchedule the game for 2023 when both coaches have had time to develop their team. I think that would be a better indicator on how both teams will be.

    1. Lol I was thinking maybe they can cancel the rice game and make a game against OU. On a neutral field. Because they will be afraid to come out west to the coli.

    2. How much is the buyout if they cancel the Rice Game? Does anyone know? USC has Rice Sept 3rd at the Coli, home opener. OU has UTEP in their home opener same day. I’m sure you can get a major network to payoff the buy outs for both schools to make it happen. That would be freaking awesome. Way to start the season especially with the coaching carousel going on this year. Then you got LSU with Brian Kelly in 2024. Ole Miss with Lane Kiffin in 2025. Time to make USC great again! Fight on!

    1. The 1982 game was something, shut them out in Norman … that Del Rio, Bickett, Hope, Achica, Browners, Troy West, etc D was amazing. And that schedule !

  1. I was at both games including the one in Norman. When SC beat them in Norman the entire town was like a funeral home. So many of these Okie fans come from smaller towns miles apart to be part of Sooner nation on Saturdays. Sooner Head Coach Barry Switzer after the game in Norman was quoted as saying: “The big boys from Southern Cal came to play today, and boy did they execute”.

I can see why Lincoln Riley wanted to move his family out of Norman there is absolutely no culture in that town, and very little to look forward to other than the next tornado.

Let’s not forget the 2004 Orange Bowl blow out. I was at this game also.
Never seen USC play a better game, and all the OU fans left at halftime including Boomer Sooner. This was a very embarrassing game for Oklahoma.. USC TE Dominic Byrd played an unbelievable game. I had seats right near Brad Pitt who also attended the game. Don’t forget Brad Pitt is originally from Oklahoma. This Orange Bowl was a very enjoyable experience I hope USC can play in this bowl game again under Abe Lincoln Riley.

    1. Given the multiple weeks to prepare, that Orange Bowl game was essentially the 2004 Defense and the 2005 Offense on the field at the same time. For a single game, best College Team ever. Only wish it was undefeated SEC Champion Auburn. SEC fans have said Auburn got screwed out of a Title Shot in 2004. After USC beat them in 2002 and embarrassed them at Auburn 23-0 in 2003, they didn’t get screwed. They got protected as part of the Mike Slive Marketing Plan.

      1. Yesterday U,
Playing LA Tech, LA Monroe & The Citadel as your OOC games will do that for you. Tubberville, that douche, had NC Champs rings made for that team. PC owned Tubbyville, Auburn and the SEC.

  2. Joe Washington was a tremendous player at OU. Along with Johnny Rodgers (Nebraska) the two top punt returners of all time. OU has had a long history of great backs including Washington, Greg Pruitt, Stanley Wilson, Billy Sims, James Overstreet, Steve Owens, etc.

Like USC Oklahoma has not had a Heisman running back in quite some time, but both schools have had their share of good quarterbacks lately

    1. I recall this broke Oklahoma’s National Record Consecutive Scoring Streak (no shutouts) at around 180. USC then held that title for a couple more years until Washington nailed us. The record is now well over 400 and counting.

  4. Don’t forget before the game, analyst Craig James piped up, “There’s no way USC can run with the athletes of Oklahoma.” He was pickin’ crow feathers out of his teeth after the game.It was a thing of beauty.

  5. No one seems to remember when a bad USC team beat Oklahoma in Norman in 1992.

USC trailing in the 4th quarter only to storm back and win 20 – 10. And then the Trojans finished the year 6 – 4 – 1.

  6. And, it’s incredible but one of the greatest coaches in college football history, Oklahoma’s Barry Switzer, is 0-3-1 all – time vs. the Trojans.

    1. If it wasn’t for USC and Miami in the 1980’s, Switzer may have never lost. Truth is they couldn’t handle NFL type speed on Defense running the Wishbone. Those losses were the big reason OU became a passing team.

      1. OU secondary also couldn’t handle NFL passers as they had nothing comparable
to practice against or play against in the B8 – Elway/Hostetler/Vinny all won big over OU.

  7. Guys, it’s OK to dream. But there is no way this USC team could compete against OU on September 3rd. No OL or DL. Let’s keep Rice and Fresno St on the schedule until we recruit and develop linemen. This is a 2 year rebuild. It took PC 1.5 years to rebuild and Hackett at least did not leave the cupboard bare. The Village Idiot let his senile family friend Callaway pass on Wyatt Davis and any other 5* SoCal OL recruit and now the cupboard is bare. Next year will be better than this year, but still not ready for OU.

  8. I don’t get the whole Dante Williams as a hero or villain narrative. He only was allowed to leave Oregon b/c his father had bad cancer. Good on Oregon for that. His Dad is dead now. Bohn is taking the loss here, not Williams. Who promotes someone to a 20 hour a day leadership position when they didn’t ask for it and are caring for a dying parent?

Not to make light of any of this but how soul crushing is it to work for Clay Helton while caring for a dying parent and taking the fall for 10 years of Drunk Pat Haden, I Don’t Actually Do Work Here Lynn Swann, and a neutered and wildly awkward Mike Bohn?

Make of all that what you will but know he gets a pass from me. Bohn’s the one that should be wearing it.
