The USC Assistant Coach In Denial

Donte Williams was one of my losers of the week for his performance at last week’s press conference featuring USC assistant coaches.

Let’s provide an example: Williams refused to answer any questions about last season or even conversations with Lincoln Riley when he was retained.

“I’m not focused on the past at all,” Williams said. “So pretty much regarding the majority of your guys’ questions today, I would like to take everything from going forward, not too much focused on what has happened here in the past.”

  • Does Williams think if he doesn’t address it, everyone will forget he went 3-7 as interim coach?
  • This could backfire because it will focus more attention on his job as cornerbacks coach, which was awful last season.
  • It’s an amazing act of denial on Williams’ part to refuse to answer any questions on the past.

  1. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Donte was retained because of his recruiting, because of strong connection and understanding of Southern California football. Once this current staff gets established, Donte will be asked to move on.

    1. Last season’s record was not a reflection on Donte Williams, he didn’t assemble that sorry ass weak team. Clay Helton is responsible for last seasons outcome, hes an idiot imbecile, who never had a clue on how to put together a championship type of team. So why is the media putting everything on Williams? If Nick Saban was USC’s interim coach, the outcome would’ve been the same

    2. The blame that Scott keeps dumping on donte is ridiculous. The guy took on a horrible task. He is obviously not head coach material yet. But there was no way to succeed with two coordinators who sucked. As far as position coach, he will get better in this staff

True USC fans need to be loyal to a guy like donte. We have a real HC now and he will make sure donte is effective

Helton is gone it is ok to believe agsin

      1. Yup 67!! I prefer the focus on the future than to dwell on last year’s dumpster fire that wasn’t really Donte’s fault (the job was thrust into him mid-season). I prefer coaches that speak little than what the Village Idiot which was speak too much then deliver very little.

      2. Wolfy is living in the past. Why talk about it any more, we all lived through it. “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow” as the song goes, lets move on. Wolf, you need to catch up, the blog is leading you.

      1. Well , he was at a presser with his new boss, for one. And the coaching staff is almost entirely new. Many of the players will be new. The team won’t even be recognizable next year from this year. I just don’t get the “let’s talk about last year” question. What is he going to say? “A pile of crap was dumped in my lap and I did the best I could?” “The D was a complete f’ing mess?” “Clay Helton is the free world’s biggest grifter known to mankind?” We all know what happened.

Perhaps he could have said “I am excited about a new season with a new coaching staff and working with LR and working with a bunch of game-changing players arriving now, last year was a challenge for so many reasons, and I am glad it is behind us, and I appreciate the guys who stuck it out and played hard and coached hard last season.”

I don’t understand saying anything beyond that. But just for the heck of it, can we get Scottie a press pass for the day and have him cover Biden?

      2. I would have appreciated “I made some mistakes but I grew a lot last year—we all did. Still, we have a long way to go before we’re playing championship football. Luckily I think we now have the right Head Coach and staff to get it done.”

  2. Never a good idea to be brash with the press because they always can get in the last word, and that is what most fans carry away.

Obviously Donte Williams was humiliated last season knowing he blew his chance to ever be a head coach anywhere except perhaps at
    Georgia Southern when Ton-o-Hel retires.

And nice positive article about SC coming back, being the only
blue-blood in the West, and having a chance this year at the “Final-4”, although having no chance of winning it all over an Alabama, Georgia, or Ohio St. But maybe in 2023.

    1. Good reply, John. I’m not willing to let Donte off the hook as easily as some of my pals are. His team was not ready to play UCLA or Cal. Players were loafing coming on and off the field….. and what they did on the field was worse.

      1. Yes it was on him. What we don’t know is the backstage stuff. And the fact that everyone knew he would be lameduck from the moment that the VC was fired made it really difficult to manage the ship. And it was obvious it was never going to be Donte as the new HC. No way could they make that mistake again, even if Donte looked like he could be the second coming of Saban.

      2. You know what, 67? If Donte’s teams kept roaring back in the second half the way they did against Washington State I think Bohn mighta just given him a 1 year contract to see if he were for real….

      3. If anyone wants to give a coach a bad time, I suggest a more worthy target.
Williams was a position coach and was asked to bypass being a coordinator and go straight to HC with a poor culture and weak supporting cast. He was put in an untenable no win situation.

A more worthy target you ask? The big creep.

      4. Hey, MG, you or I could not have done worse coaching that team. I don’t believe we would have given up over 60 point to sucla. In my imagination I would have gotten real tough with those kids in practice, telling them to compete, just like in the Carroll days. You play as you practice, I would preach.

And then I would have knocked them out with a knock-off Knute Rockne speech: “Fellas, first of all, if I catch any of you celebrating a play other than a touchdown you will be sitting on the bench next to me. This is SC, so if you make a good play act as if you have been there before. Next, this is the attitude I want you to carry out on that field today– I want you to go out there and win one for your girlfriend. And finally, let’s hear it for our school– USC, USC, USC, USC!– Alright, I think you’re ready– go get them!”

      5. John, I would’ve liked Donte to pull a coach Norman Dale. “You’ll play by my rules or you won’t play at all.” Then when the ref came over and told Donte, “you have only 4 players on the field.” Donte would have emphatically stated…My Team Is On The Field.

      7. btw, It wasn’t how many people Donte put on the field that got us in trouble —it was how quickly he got them off between plays…

      8. NO.. that was an all hellton team
which is why they are jumping into the portal, they don’t want to work that hard to be a top team, which Riley wants.

  3. Scooter,

Why do you want to hear how lousy the team was? he already took the hit for the season. Move on. Give him a fresh start. Let his coaching determine how he does. If his corners get burned, then get rid of him. but let the past go by the way side. Give him a fresh start

  4. Gargamel has grudge against King Donte. Dude lost his dad during the season. Gargamel wouldn’t dare say this stuff to Donte’s face. Gargamel Wolf is a coward.

  5. By the way Donte is the reigning 3 time Pac 12 recruiter of the year. USC doesn’t recruit itself anymore in 2022. Gargamel refuses to let go of the 60s and the 70s.

  6. Donte was in over his head. You want him to admit that? Scott Wolf is a cantankerous germ spreader. You need him to fall on his sword? For Clay? Mike Bohn? Drake Jackson? Folks were coattails riding off of USC’s reputation. Now, it’s put up or get the hell out of here. You really can be a hard read at times Mr. Wolf.

  7. BTW, where is owns? And is there a college in Arizona that the wooden legacy hasn’t lost to this season? I recall that there used to be an aeronautical college in Flagstaff back in the day. Maybe the bru babies could beat the flight school fellas?
