The Transfer Portal Keeps Churning For Linemen

Georgia offensive lineman Amarius Mims has withdrawn from the transfer portal.

Oregon lineman Jonah Miller, a four-star prospect who USC recruited, is entering the portal. Miller was switched to defensive line this spring, which might be why he transferred.

In the old, old days, USC used to switch defensive linemen to offense with pretty good results. Ron Yary started out as a defensive lineman before he won the Outland Trophy as an offensive lineman. John Vella was a defensive lineman and got switched to offensive tackle and became an All-American.

  1. In the 1963 Rose Bowl game we ran out of defensive linemen in the fourth quarter and had to use offensive linemen there. That’s not to take anything away from Ron VanderKelen who threw for three touchdowns in the fourth quarter and had another pass intercepted by Willie Brown in the end zone. We won 42-37 and won the national championship as we all remember.

    1. My family picnicked before the game, so we got there a few minutes late and USC had already scored. [On the way in we saw one kid selling programs that had gotten wet —my Dad, who’d been a paperboy in the depression, said “that’s the boy we’re gonna get our programs from”]…..

      1. I know my brothers and I will, 67…. Pop couldn’t buy us ice creams off the Good Humor truck without buying every other kid on the curb one too —and we weren’t exactly that well off at the time…

      2. Good for your dad. My dad was that way too. By the way if I remember right our first TD was scored on the tackle eligible play. We had the Badgers down 42-14. Then it got almost dark. No lights on either. All my friends asked me Were you that Trojan that climbed up and turned the clock on the scoreboard from three minutes down to two minutes ? It really had gotten off. On the last play of the game we punted from aroused our own ten. I was screaming for us to take a safety. The clock would have run out. But John wouldn’t have it.

      3. It’s a tough call as to what to do next when when you go up big against a great team (Wisconsin was actually favored by a few points, it was a #1 vs #2 game). Coach McKay a few years later said that his strategy against good teams was to “bomb ’em early.” Apparently the second part of his strategy was “once you’re up big, slow things down and let the clock do the rest.” That almost always works —but sometimes it can get pretty hairy at the end.

  2. Probably just about every school in America is watching the portal for O linemen. If we get one that would be great, if we got two it would be over the top. I wonder what LR will do to provide the depth we need.

  3. Don’t worry about OL! I’ll pay them em’ all. Do you know how rich I am? Just tell Riley to stop grabbing player’s mom’s ass! He will see the backside of Will Smith hand!

      1. MIB was one of those that whenever I’m channel surfing and nothing else is on, I’d put it on. (Armageddon, Rudy, 2012, Die Hard(s), Office Space, Magnificent Seven, The Equalizer, Tombstone, Hoosiers, etc.)

Now? I just don’t want to see his stupid face.

    1. So hilarious. [It’s more or less easy for staffers to explain why a Big White Bunny showed up & shoved Biden off camera on Easter Sunday—but it’s gonna be tougher to explain when the Easter Bunny is still showing up at events in November to put his hand over Joe’s mouth]……

    1. She is Joe’s insurance policy. He put her there so no one would be in a hurry to push him out.

He may actually have one or two functioning brain cells left!

    2. Yeah, no one should be upset that a guy who bs’d about having a plan to defeat the virus has had 600,000 people die “on his watch”. No one should be upset that 200 died with his botched exit from Afghanistan. No one should care that tens of thousands are dying in Ukraine. No one should care that millions of families are struggling to keep food on the table and gas in their cars. No one should care about the drugs & human trafficking coming up through the non-existent southern border and the fact Joe is ignoring our laws. Not to mention the hundreds who have died trying to make that journey, since Joe & Kamala laid out the Welcome mat!

None of that is any big deal. The complete incompetence of this administration shouldn’t upset anyone. Just ignore all of that suffering and pretend it isn’t happening.

The stupidity & lack of human compassion of the left is amazing.

      1. She laughs when presented with difficult questions that she’s not prepared to answer. She makes excuses about not visiting the border. Joe is whisked away by his wife or the Easter Bunny before he can answer any questions and make a fool out of himself. He governs “like a dictator”, based on (his own standard of) issuing EOs & banning media from the border.

All of these things are indications of an incompetent administration. These are things that should have raised red flags to any voter with an IQ above 75. They did similar things throughout their so-called campaign, (when not hiding in his basement). I laid out several of the most painful consequences of their incompetence.

It’s not the laughter itself. Amazing that people don’t get that!

I have a heart. I don’t enjoy seeing the pain, destruction and potential global devastation that installing a corrupt, fragile, weak, incompetent “leader” has caused not only domestically, but internationally.

      2. Get over yourself. While you may have something of a point about Afghanistan and Covid, although the latter was an unfulfilled campaign plan and every president has those, you blaming Ukraine on Biden is something a person with an IQ below 75 does. By your own logic, Covid wouldn’t have happened under Hillary Clinton.

      3. The idiot is in denial and trying to wash the blood from his hands. He and every person who voted for the useless old man is responsible for putting someone into office our adversaries were bound to walk all over. What do you expect from someone who thought it was just about her laugh?

They have to convince themselves they couldn’t have seen this coming, when those of us with any sense saw it coming a mile away.

He’s also too dumb to remember what his own incredibly stupid guy said: “No one who has had 200K people die on his watch should be President.”

By HIS OWN STANDARDS, he should not be President. We knew that. But dipshits who make excuses about their own culpability for what’s going on in Ukraine didn’t know it.

No blood on my hands, just a conservative blowhard ranting on a USC sports blog.
Keep repeating how you know the Putin invasion and atrocities wouldn’t have happened had Trump actually won and you may actually come to believe it.
What I do have trouble understanding is how would a president who preached American isolationism and also kissed Putin’s ass would have prevented this.

    Both excellent linemen and blockers.
Spring practices were really the only time that we went full speed .. full contact!
They were great and It was always a big time struggle to get past their blocks!!
After going up against them in practice, game day opponents were somewhat easier for me to shed and make the tackle ad a strong side LB..

    1. What a year 1967 was. Finally beat the Irish at South Bend. First time since 1939 when Grenny Lansdell and Ambrose Schindler whipped them20-12. And. Then the great 21-20 win over the Bruins. OJ had two unbelievable runs for touchdowns. On the first one he was hit like 10-12 times but wouldn’t go down. And the last. That cutback. Oh man !! Thanx for the memories bro !!!

      2. June 17, 1994 was his best run.

KCOP interrupted a rerun of Matlock to show it. After a while they cut back to Matlock and the switchboard was flooded with calls to return to the chase, so they did.

It went so long that Domino’s had their biggest night ever, at that point in their history. People did not want to leave the TV to either make, or pick up, dinner.

A few days later, when ratings were released, the start of LA’s obsession with police chases had begun. It was ratings gold.
