Did You Tell Carol Folt You Were Sorry?

Here’s a Carol Folt quote on from the Athletic story the Lincoln Riley hire.

“I did have a couple of people who wrote me letters and said, ‘Boy, I’ve been giving you a lot of grief online. I want to say I’m sorry.’ I did get those and it was actually really fun to get those,” Folt said. “And I got really nice ones from other people who said they were really hoping but weren’t sure it was going to happen.”

Did some of this blog’s readers write to Folt?

  • My take from Day 1 of the Riley hire has been this: Obviously, it was a great move for USC. But it’s also true USC waited too long to fire Clay Helton and went through one of the worst seasons in its history in 2021. That will always be on Mike Bohn, no matter what the USC spin machine says.

I only go back til the late 60’s but it seems to me that SC derives energy out of being
      Hated
      Envied
      Just uncordially disliked.

Don’t think they give a damn. Even when they have outstanding talent and results or lay down like dogs nothing will change.

    2. Mike Bohn was an imbecile for not recognizing that Clay Helton was a Jerkoff sooner then he did. He actually thought hiring two new coordinators who were just as dumb as Helton would do the trick. 😂😂

  1. Who knows for sure, other than Scott Wolf, and maybe even Wolfie doesn’t know for sure about why Bon-Bon didn’t fire Ton-o-Hel sooner.

Maybe his hands were tied, or maybe he didn’t want SC to depart with all of that Clay Buy-out dough, or maybe he didn’t have a replacement at the ready, or heaven help us, who knows what else.

And no, I was not one to write to ‘Without-a-Folt.’ If you have nothing good to say about someone it is best to avoid being vitriolic and go with some simple sarcasm instead.

  2. They should have never hired Clay Helton in the first place. That’s not on Folt and Bohn. That’s on Max Nakias and Pat Haden and Lynn Swann(for giving him a contract extension)

    1. 67 — don’t you just love the way Cal 75 keeps referencing the 2021 win? And sez WE rolled over….after THEY officially FORFEITED. [As I recall Cal forfeited cuz somebody on the bear team thought he might have covid and self quarantined in the women’s bathroom]. Naturally, Folt insisted our team play the bears after the UCLA game [when the team was so sick of playing for Donte they were in full meltdown].

  3. Helton was always a poor choice. Plenty of coaches who could have come in a stabilized the program without being horrible on the field. But…. If we would’ve got a good coach we may not have a great coach now.

    1. Agreed. CH was really what the doctor ordered in order for the fans and everyone else to be so outraged that they had to hire a good coach.

    2. Since J-Rob 1 in 1976, Pete was the only standout HC, so clearly USC has struggled to hire a good coach for most of the last 46 years. Riley is a tremendous hire, whether or not he fell into Bohn’s lap. I don’t see a feasible candidate any better , given that Saban, Swinney, Ryan Day and Dave Aranda weren’t leaving. And who knows whether the latter two guys are better.

      1. trojan1967,

I am on the wait and see mode. I will give him a year. Howeve, if the defense sucks in the second year, then I will have doubts. I am waiting for the second year. First year can be a winner or a loser. Ask John Robinson when he lost to Missouri in 1976 and went to the Rose Bowl. Ask, if you could, Larry Smith who lost to Illnois. I forget the qb for Illinois but he beat SC. I was pissed off about that.

      2. PT, agree. The way I see it, he is making the right decisions in terms of cleaning house, getting the best portal guys he can, hiring the best coaches he can, changing accountability and culture. Urban Meyer thought highly enough of Grinch that he hired him at Ohio State before Riley hired him to Oklahoma. I thought there was a lot of good stuff to build on after seeing the Spring scrimmage. But it is essentially a new team, and they will take some time to come together.

  6. I believe it was the Dolt who kept Helton in his job….terrible decision, just like the Haden, Swan, Garrett who showed their incompetence year after year, bad hiring choice after bad hiring choice.

  7. President Hot Lips “a couple of people”!? That would make sense as USC people see through your BS social agenda as well as your general management incompetence.

    1. School with the most Marxists —-UCSB. How did it get that way? Carol Folt started an “I [Really, Really} Hate America Club” as an undergrad and subsidizes it to this day with the money she makes from renting out her Santa Monica mansion [while she sleeps in Lincoln Park —across the street from my former high school —where the priests told us to stay away from the women in miniskirts who live in the bushes]……

  8. All I know is, NO ONE who voted for Dementia Joe should be calling out USC’s decision to bring Carol on. Biden voters forfeited any opportunity to call out anyone else’s bad decision making for life!

      1. Funny you would mention that. Only yesterday, I stopped and admired the huge one across the street from us.

What a mess they make, but absolutely gorgeous!

  9. Folt does not deserve any credit regarding USC football. She only did it because she was forced to. Bohn is the guy who deserves this credit. Sure, he took too long, but maybe that was necessary. He did fire Helton in the 2nd game of the season, which is pretty unheard of.

There is NO WAY that USC and Riley were not talking earlier than a few days out. Probably kep the communication between his agent and USC.

  10. So Cal– If you or anyone else ever has the chance, check out Del Mar Boulevard in Pasadena, it is what I call the Miracle Mile of Jacarandas. But you better hurry because they are shedding their leaves rather wildly right now.

  12. Yes Folt sent me a a note.
She said, “I’ve got a couple of small things to get off my chest. First my name is Carol not Cuntswaylow. And second I tried calling Clay Helton to my office but he kept getting lost. “
Furthermore I don’t get involved in the day to day operations of our sports teams unless some roid juicing stud gets beat up by his girlfriend. Then I step up to punish the demon spawn with all the weight of social media”

  13. 100% -Scott Wolf is correct. Bohn and Folt were both hired at very high salaries to fix what was wrong at USC, and waited entirely too long to fire Helton who they both knew was incompetent, and would cost the university a ton of revenue if a change was not made quickly.

Let’s see if they act quickly on another incompetent coach in Jason Gill who has never been a winner in college baseball, and yet was hired to lead what was once one of the top programs year after year in college baseball. Bad hire by the previous athletic director, and it’s time to make a change by hiring one of the top coaches in college baseball. You pay for quality coaches in college athletics today, or you won’t succeed. It is going to be interesting to see what happens with Lindsay Gottlieb the women’s basketball coach because it seems we are stuck with her for awhile so we will know more after season number 2.

      1. Maybe based on what he gets out of what he has to work with. Let’s face it. Stanford does not relax their admissions & continuing academic standards ONE BIT for athletes. Doesn’t matter how good you are.

Holtz wouldn’t take the job at ND unless they made allowances for his players. But once he left, they went right back up.

I’ll always admire schools that put academics first, yet remain competitive.

    Saban of Alabama
    Smart of Georgia
    Swinney of Clemson
    Riley of USC
    Fisher of Texas A&M

The top-3 have all won national championships.

      1. “Not so fast,” my friend. It is more difficult to win national championships today than in McKay’s era. Not only does a team have to win its conference, but then there is a vote to determine if it is deserving to get into the ‘Final-4,’ where 2 wins are necessary to be crowned.

Even the great Saban is “only” 2-3 in his team’s last 5 appearances.
