USC Morning Buzz: Winners And Losers Of Week

WINNERS

Jordan Addison

He comes to USC armed with a Biletinikoff Award and an NIL package worth $3.5 million. Life is good.

Salute to Troy

The football kickoff dinner is back, albeit in June. More revenue for the athletic dept.

Rick Caruso

The campaign is going so good he was at a local restaurant Friday night instead of an L.A. mayoral debate.

Pac-12

No more divisions starting in 2023. What are the tiebreakers?

LOSERS

Jordan Addison

He won’t get to wear No. 3 at USC. It’s retired.

Former USC players

So the Salute to Troy was not held the past three years. It honored teams that held their 25th and 50th anniversaries. Are those teams getting honored retroactively now that Salute to Troy is back?

The returning USC receiver corps

If you’re not a star transfer, where do you fit in? Somewhere on the bench?

Jason Gill

The season is mercifully over for USC baseball, which finished last in the Pac-12 and lost seven of its final eight games.

USC-Rice game

The Trojans are 34-point favorites in the season-opener per BetOnline. How much are tickets again? What will the temperature be Sept. 3?

Fanboys

USC player-organized workouts in June and July are closed to the media.

  1. These past Heisman winners should grant permission to certain players to wear their retired jersey numbers. Proven players, not say unproven big-time incoming recruits. #55 too.

    1. Darnell Bing wore #20 because Mike Garrett allowed it. I’m sure Palmer wouldn’t mind allowing a player to wear #3. It could be a double retirement for the number in the future.

    2. Nah, if a kid is hung up on a specific number that’s a red flag. Like, you’re not going to a school unless you can wear some random ass number that happens to be retired? Pick a different number and try to get it retired through your performance or go to dumbass Oregon and wear your special number in some 150+ uniform color combos.

      1. George, I had the pleasure of getting to know Gary Beban, the ’67 Heisman winner over the years through business interests. Tremendous fellow, great leader, he threw for 300 yards in the game of the century, with cracked ribs. He remarked to me “the SC defense was NFL quality. God was looking out for us that day to be able to compete with the Trojans.” He also said “OJ was from another planet. No one could run like him, including Jim Brown.”

      2. Where is Gary now 1967 ?? And didn’t he work in real estate ?? He seems like a great guy per your story. And you too my friend.

      4. Thx, ’25! Back at you. Gary’s career was indeed in commercial real estate, CB Richard Ellis, he rose close to the top, and is now retired after a long career there. He was a history major at ucla. He said “I knew I chose the wrong major when I interviewed and they asked me about ‘depreciation and taxes’ and I didn’t have much to say.

    1. Not if Dementia Joe gets his way. His Ministry of Truth was shut down for now, but that doesn’t mean the same fascist crap isn’t going on behind the scenes. They’re watching all of us.

As Jussie Smollett said, “IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME, DOG, I AM NOT SUICIDAL!”

      1. No worries on that front—-Jussie is now free to spend his nest egg in Switzerland….

  4. Well one thing is apparent. The recent coach Grinch interview indicates that Riley’s assistant coaches at least have some smarts compared to the dummies under Helton. Now it remains to be seen if this translates onto the field under the stress of combat in games. Last year many of the defensive backs in particular only wanted to arm tackle. Even worse, the team culture of the players did not stop that and the coaches were unable to instill players with enough fight to tackle to the ground. So this year will the players, not only the coaches, tolerate arm tackling? We will find out soon.

    1. I THINK THEY HAD BETTER FORGET ARM TACKLING IF THEY WANNA PLAY UNDER RILEY AND GRINCH BRO. ……… I HOPE HE IS NOT THE GRINCH THAT STOLE CHRISTMAS. I DONT THINK HE IS BRO.

  5. If it is true that Addison and some of these other big college stars are pulling down a million or more, then who needs the NFL?– Invest that money properly and even at 7% interest one can live off the interest pretty well for the rest of one’s life. The NFL is light years ahead of college ball as far as brutality. Just check out the highlights of
    Dick Butkus.

In a straight runoff between Karen and Rick, as George likes to call them, Karen is ahead by about 10-points. Maybe you can’t buy the mayorship.

I would press hard to have Reggie Bush’s Heisman reinstated, not for him, but for the good of SC.

Scott is worried about tiebreakers for 2023. What about 2022?– Say Oregon and SC, who don’t play each other, are tied for one of the two spots for the Pac-12 title. What then?

      1. Yeah, I know the feeling, George. The house on Westwood Boulevard that my dad sold for $12,500 is now “worth” $1.3 million. It is a 2 bedroom 2 bath, 800 foot home. I would be embarrassed to have friends know that I paid that kind of money for such a modest shelter.

Fortunately, food, gas and clothing did not sky-rocket in price like real estate, but the prices are still out-stripping most people’s rising incomes.

That is why my retirement plan is to keep working until I drop dead.

  6. Winner’s and losers are a matter of perspective. I see the Rice game as a winner. Vegas odds don’t impress me, but a chance to start the season with a win makes the game a tempting trip. I don’t think a trouncing of another team will get boring for a while. It may take several years to get the bad taste the Helton epoch left in fan’s mouths.
Kick the crap out of Rice, everybody does and when it was scheduled it probably looked like a toss-up.

  7. Re: Dwayne Haskins, some raised their eyebrows at my suggestion it was suicide.

A blood alcohol content of .20 at the time of his death – nearly 2.5 times the legal limit along with ketamine and norketamine at 6:37 am and a “female companion” in the car, who was NOT HIS WIFE, is not someone who’s happy with his life. The equivalent of suicide.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. When Haskins exited his vehicle and started walking on the highway, allegedly because he ran out of gas and was looking for a gas station, it wouldn’t matter what his blood alcohol level was because it is not illegal to walk and be drunk.

And I doubt that the man was unhappy with his life with everything he had going for himself. The official word is that it was an accident, and I would leave it at that.

    2. And that’s your prerogative.

No one claimed it’s illegal to walk while drunk. But still being that drunk at 6:37 am and HAVING OTHER ILLICIT DRUGS IN HIS SYSTEM, all probably taken the prior evening and having a female companion who wasn’t his wife in the car…

Contrary to popular belief, money and fame doesn’t bring happiness. Somebody doing all of those things to escape his reality indicate someone who wanted or needed something else.

It’s a much sadder ending than a mere “accident”.

  8. If you ever want to fish for a compliment about your age tack on an extra 10 years. The only problem with that is if the person then retorts, “Oh, Michael, you look 8 years younger than that”

      1. I told that joke last week?– I guess I am old because I don’t recall. What is the old saying, “The mind is the first to go,” but as Rodney Dangerfield once exclaimed, “Actually, it’s the second to go.”

  9. Salute to Troy is same weekend we have a huge group of official visits. It’s certainly not an arbitrary date. It’s great we are bring it back, but it’s also no surprise Riley will leverage that event.
