USC Morning Buzz: Winners And Losers Of Week

WINNERS

Rick Caruso

The election-eve L.A. Times poll had him at 32 percent but he ended up with 42 percent of the vote and advanced to the November general election.

Karen Bass

She got 38 percent of the vote to ensure a USC-flavored general election for Mayor of Los Angeles.

Reggie Bush

He’s back on the ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame. Will the second time be the charm? And how does anyone else from USC get in before he does? In other words, he’s creating a logjam for Trojan candidates.

USC 4×100 relay team

There was a time when USC dominated the short relays but this was the first NCAA title in the event for the Trojan men since 1980.

BONUS WINNER

Can you imagine a USC assistant coach (Alex Grinch, Graham Harrell, Clancy Pendergast) pulling off being in an episode of Columbo? Marv Goux did it.

LOSERS

Andy Enfield

USC’s offered some transfers but failed to land one so far. Will the Trojans go into next season with only the players on the current roster?

Jack Del Rio

Quite a week. Fined $100,000. Deleted Twitter account. And pretty much killed whatever fantastical inner hope he had of one day being USC coach.

USC baseball

Lost top pitcher Carson Lambert, who transferred to Texas A&M. Hard to believe this is the most successful baseball program in NCAA history with 12 titles.

Coach Bohn

Who will he get to dump all that work to now that the Boy Wonder is off to the Detroit Lions? I’m sure there are plenty willing to become the next Mini-Me.

I’ll give an award for losing the top baseball player (Lambert) and soccer player (Penelope Hocking) in the same year.

      1. I liked as a DC but not as a HC. If Grinch doesn’t work out I wouldn’t mind having as a DC but after all this, that isn’t going to happen.

    2. Once again, few people dislike thug cops more than I do. They are seldom charged for their crimes and even less likely to be convicted.

      But how BLM handled it during the summer of 2020 was not cool. There should have been investigations and prosecutions. Violent, destructive mobs are violent, destructive mobs no matter which side they’re on.

      1. Most Americans don’t know pre-World War 2 Italian history —my family lived it. The Fascist Party had a military arm that went around beating up on opponents and burning their property. That’s what the dems have now —they call them BLM & Antifa —-but they have nothing to do with making lives better —they just beat up political opponents and burn their property.

I’ll always remember the two upper class white kids who, at the beginning of the “Summer of Love”, were asked to kiss the shoes of a supposed Black Lives Matter leader ….and bent down and did it.       2. If you’re going to truly practice diversity, you should make sure every football team is about 55% white and about 13% black. They should do that in the NBA too. After all, isn’t diversity supposed to make all organizations look like the rest of america. Actually, the word diversity today is nothing more than a buzz word for discrimination

  3. Really hope Caruso wins. We need a return to sanity in this town. First, double the police budget. Reinstitute “broken window” policing along with cash bail and the three strikes laws. Send the criminal gangs back to Mexico or El Salvador. We cannot be a sanctuary city for the drug cartels. And, impeach Gascon and install a DA who is actually interested in enforcing laws and protecting people.

      1. Caruso should do all of that. I can hope. Most of the true electorate agrees with these policies and they have worked in New York and other cities. The Zuckerberg mules may not agree, and the mules are legal in California along with non citizen voter registration and voting and no ID voting and no signature verification on mail in votes thanks to our corrupt one party system. We are up against the new leftist democratic party who have abandon most of the rights America once held sacred including the sanctity of the vote.

  5. USC track a winner, IMHO.

    Having lost a top tier coach (albeit, difficult to deal with at times), the men finish #12–a decent finish given the circumstances. Consistent performance year after year. Build on the sprints/sprint relays. Work on the fields. Let the wimpy schools win the distance events.

    Long history of great women sprinters. Build on it.
    A tip of the cap to the Cal women’s team for earning a top 20 finish (more or less).

  6. Mike Bohn–winner of the week.

    With Sosna taking a promotion into the NFL, Bohn may show the fanboys if he is truly a great professional AD (or not).
    He had a good hire at CU in Tad Boyle–takes the Buffs to the dance every year (more or less) and a good hire in Mike MacIntyre at CU. Had the Buffs been able to retain Jim Leavitt, Mac would have had a winning program year after year. CU pays its Assistant Coaches so poorly that no decent OC or DC will stay at the school. Not the AD’s fault.
    I don’t think Sosna was at CU during these two hires.

    Bohn is smart enough to know no one cares about College Baseball anymore. Spend tons of money on a great freshman class and they all go pro after one or two seasons. I love baseball, but the college game is DOA. Dead bats=dead game.

    We’ll see about Women’s soccer and Women’s hoops. Losing Kedane was terrible.

The funny thing is — he’ll have a better chance if stops playing the “I want everybody to like me” game and just does what he thinks is best.   7. Pendergast and Harrell might get offered to play coaches on a TV show. They have a lot of experience doing that. And keep getting hired after being fired.

    1. The protests and demonstrations were probably close to 100% peaceful, the riots that followed the events were 100% not. Unfortunately, they almost always devolved into riots. Trying to spin it any other way is disingenuous. It was on TV every night for all to see, unless my lying eyes deceived me.

    2. Ashli Babbit was the only casualty on Jan 6 and there weren’t thousands of businesses looted or destroyed. So, don’t try to pretend your above anyone who feels the worst people on both sides should have either been prosecuted or absolved of wrong doing.     4. Those peaceful riots caused around $2 billion in damages, dozens of people killed and many more injured. Let’s not forget all the people who spent their lives building businesses only to have rioters burn them down in one night. Their whole lives went up in smoke. Those are the facts. If that’s peaceful, God help us when they really get mad.

    1. When I spent a summer up in Sonoma I watched guys prepare for the race — it was really inspiring: their entire families were there to show support. Great, tight knit community. [And their 4th of July Parade is what it’s all about —nothing extravagant, no gimmicks —just lots of barbeques & fireworks and happy neighbors].
