USC Hires Mike Leach Aide For New Football Position

Dave Emerick, who has worked for Mike Leach the past 18 years, was hired by USC to be “General Manager/Senior Associate Athletic Director for Football.”

This is a position that never existed previously at USC. I’m interested exactly where it fits in the athletic dept. hierarchy because USC only has around five senior associate athletic directors but none solely dedicated to football.

Is it a glorified position just to make sure Lincoln Riley’s desires are met? The position is obviously going to be below Riley. Emerick has always been an aide to Leach.

At Mississippi State, Emerick oversaw Mississippi State’s football recruiting and worked with the senior athletic dept. administration.

It does show USC wants to beef up its football operations . . . again. So that should be good for the program.

      1. They should hire Chip, dress him as Bozo the Clown and bring him out at halftime of all our home games to do the ‘chicken call’ from “The Blue Angel”…

      2. That’s the kinda reality check I needed today, Charles….may [or may not] save me at tonight’s dinner party.

      3. I think the students just want to be sufficiently woke. Just properly virtual signaled. May or may not actually believe the PCbullshit. Just want to get past all the BS and get their degree and paycheck.

      4. Mike Leach … Really??? I’d feel more comfortable if Lincoln Riley would’ve hired someone linked to Nick Saban, or Kirby Smart. Is Riley really going to play physical football, or that 7 on 7 bull shit that never required dominating offense linemen?

    1. Not exactly, Charles. Insiders are saying Emerick appears in between Riley (top) and Bohn on the org chart.

      1. USC will keep Bohner around for his shits and giggles. President Flo president emeritus … she’s no heavyweight like Rufus von KleinSmid who hung out with the likes of Babe Ruth and Herbert Hoover✌️

    1. If I saw “General Manager/Senior Associate Athletic Director for Football” on a business card or resume I would be skeptical. How is a “general manager” also an “associate.” General manager for football suggests some real authority while an associate to the director typically picks-up the donuts and needs permission to take a long lunch. Titles no longer attempt to accurately describe a persons job functions or responsibilities. According to his business card, my neighbor the stockbroker is the Vice President of J.P Morgan. He drives a Honda Accord and cuts his own lawn.

      1. Do my own yard and pool. Got tired of having to point out every little thing to the gardener. I may re-examine if/when I hit 80 or thereabouts. But for now, I’m good.

    2. 100% True story: Chip Kelly told this joke to boosters –“whenever our cheerleaders get drunk they complain about dates with the football team devolving into grasping at straws….”

      1. Yeah and at Oregon they got drunk and were high on weed a lot. One writer said that 40% of the Oregon players smoked weed on a regular basis when Kelly was coach. Kelly is a great offensive mind. He’s a terrible recruiter and a terrible disciplanarian and he doesn’t care much about defense.

  1. USC football is getting top heavy in management, and the buddy system. Winning only justifies the extra management if and only it comes quickly. Going the cheap route in the past didn’t work let’s see if the Riley formula works with all this hype.

  2. And also worth reporting, my local BevMo now has in stock Trojan1967’s recommended Angel’s Envy and Bourbon’s recommended Woodford Double Oak. I just purchased both online and will pick up tomorrow. I probably won’t sample them until next weekend, but glad I found them.

Now if I could only find a bottle of Blanton’s! I have a feeling it’s as over rated as Patron tequila or a Colt Python. But I still want to try it.

    1. You have to love a name like Rufus Von Kleinsmid. I cannot imagine an 18 year old student complaining to Rufus about the required curriculum or that it is not inclusive enough. On the other hand, you can bitch to “Carol” about anything. I recall an English teacher once emphasizing the importance of names in storytelling. He asked me to list potential names for a fictional prison guard, I said Earl McCullough, Rod McNeil or Abdul Rockman, formerly Lucius Allen of UCLA. Rufus could be a prison guard.

    2. So Cal!
Angel’s and Woodford’s Double are both “top shelf.”
You may pour for any friend with confidence!
(You might also just keep them for yourself and offer you’re friends the cheap stuff!). LOL.

Blanton’s at $80 per bottle is sublime. Unfortunately the few places that can get a bottle now will stomp on it to $200. No beverage is worth that price! It’s a rare day I open the Blanton’s bottle here. I’m thinking early January 2023 might be the day!

  3. nothing like contradictory statements a couple sentences apart…is it a glorified ,do nothing position, or one which should be a good benefit for football

  4. Ryno: Seems that Emerick will largely fill the void left by Spencer Harris, who was USC’s director of player personnel before joining Stay Doubted.
