USC Morning Buzz: Pundits Let Paychecks Decide Opinions

The reactions from college football pundits to the Big Ten move seems to be determined by who they work for:

  • Here’s a message that sounds exactly what you would expect from someone at Fox Sports, which is quite happy with two conferences calling all the shots.
https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
  • Meanwhile, barely a peep from one of the faces of the Pac-12 Network.
https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
  • Eight baseball players from Grand Canyon have entered the transfer portal. How many of them is USC recruiting? We’ll know soon.
  • Yesterday was John McKay’s 99th birthday. I wonder what he would have thought of USC moving to the Big Ten?

    1. YOU ARE DEAD RIGHT TIM. AND THAT CHANGE WAS PUT THRU BY JESS HILL OUR FORMER COACH AND ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AT THE TIME. HE HAD SEEN ENOUGH OF NOV – DEC SNOW BLIZZARDS WHEN THE IRISH HAD STRONG TEAMS THAT ALSO HAD THE RIGHT GEAR AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRACTICE IN THAT CRAP.

Do you really think that Carol has made it “clear” USC won’t play Michigan in mid November …and Ohio State in late November?

  1. WITHAN EXPANDED PLAYOFF TEAMS CAN LOSE A COUPLE GAMES AND STILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS MOST OR ALL OF THE PLAYOFF TEAMS WILL COME FROM THE BIG TEN AND ACCC. I SEE THEM BOTH HAVING AT LEAST TWENTY TEAMS IN A FEW YEARS. EVEN A THREE LOSS TEAM CAN MAKE THE PLAYOFFS. THE TROJANS WILL BE FINE FIGHT ON !!!!!

  2. John McKay wouldn’t give a rats ass if USC went to the Big Ten, or SEC, because he understood the physical game of football. He would laugh at these clowns coaching that air raid sissy nonsense .😂

It’s summer so expect him frequently. He thinks playing with himself is being self employed.

    2. John McKay would not flinch at going to B1G, although he would miss playing against teams he had come to know. McKay was smart enough to realize that today’s offense is faster, more skilled and scores more points than his I formation ever did. He would embrace it with a line that was tops in the game.

    3. I think McKay was 6-3 in Rose Bowls against the Big 10, so it’s not a stretch to think that McKay would have had tremendous success against everyone in the Big 10

    1. CAL75,

I loved going to the bay are to see either Stanford or CAl. God see the band at union Square on a Friday, go party all night, and next day either hung over or drunk, still, go to the game, get back to the hotel, shower, and go out to a nice dinner and then the Mark Hopkins for a night cap. Now, you gotta go across country. What a shame.

Unless the big 10/20 absorbs some PAC schools, SC teams and boosters are going to have a hard time finding fun on road trips to to the Midwest and east coast especially with bottom tier schools.( Several times a year) Those trips are not fun and will wear people down.
For those that think that just by adding flight time and swapping that with sleep time…. Lolol. You don’t sleep when preparing for a game.
To answer your question re Cal football. I don’t have a crystal ball but if NIL evolves into players becoming employees( they will not be allowed in the USA to become independent contractors) then Cal & furd faculty will revolt.
Cal football has almost a $billion of liabilities. They can’t give up D1. I dread the future of Cal football. I’m waiting for our AD Knowlton to pull a rabbit out of his hat. And Wilcox to recruit some difference makers’ on offense.

        Cal75 out.

    3. Cal, it is 6 hours to Newark max, and remember these guys will charter a flight, not sit in a terminal, and go non-stop. What is with all these people scared to death of travel? Been cooped up to long for covid? If it is cold at your destination, bring a friggen jacket, that is what they are for. Teams have heaters on sidelines now, and once the ball is kicked off the cold doesn’t matter, both teams blow steam. It’s football the way it should be, played in the elements and the best team wins.

You might need to get out more often and fly biz class to the east coast Nov – March. Hard to combine that with pleasure unless you’re an experienced traveler. For some adults, no problem. For recreational flyers, lotsa luck.
For players hoping to maintain academic standards, GFL.

  5. Leave Thursday AM get there in the afternoon. Stay in Manhattan. Go to dinner at a 5 star restaurant. Go to a show, concert, or anything event you can think of. Game Saturday, dress warm if it’s late fall. After the game back in Manhattan, repeat endless restaurant and bar opportunities. Get up and fly home Sunday. Take the afternoon to recover. Rutgers trip will be great.

Now Nebraska, Penn St, Iowa, and some others, not so much. Also for basketball season it will be atrocious. I’ve been to the Midwest in the middle of winter, it’s miserable. Unless you like blizzards, then it is great.

‘if it’s fall’ ?? Fall arrives in the mid Atlantic Sept 1. The leaves have fallen by the second week of Oct. Their fall is our winter. In the Sierras!
Bring 3 sets of clothes, irregardless of the weather forecast. Enjoy those yummy New Yahkers.

Ever been in that area in fall? The depleted hurricane fronts are still traveling north from the Carolinas. West coasters have no idea what weather is.

      2. Who cares!! Let the weather be whatever, just go win baby. Let the whimps cry about the cold, the wind, and the chill. They make very warm jackets these days, go buy one. It is time to accept the facts and just get on board and be ready. Why whine about it now, it is 2 years off.

I agree with your assesment about the weather, travel, and logistics of trying to get to the east coast in November through March. I was born in Missouri. lived in Mt. Clemon’s Michaigan, 15 miles north east of Detroit on the lake front, and my parents are from St. Louis. I have expereinced the cold. It sucks. At least with heat you can cool off, but with cold you never get warm, never. If not careful, you can catch pnumoia by going in and out of buildings during the cold because you get warm and then you get cold again. You also have to wear scarves around your mouth and nose so that your lungs don’t freeze. People die from frozen lungs.

    2. Basketball is played indoors, in heated arenas. When you arrive you get a hotel close to the arena, either walk or cab to game. Somehow for centuries people have lived through it and enjoyed sports, I am sure we can too unless you are a total pussy.

  6. If we had a big time donor we’d build a hockey venue. Then with impending cold games they could lay down turf rugs and acclimate to the environment.
Actually USC will have to say, “ the other team is playing, it must be possible to plain these conditions.”
I certainly don’t expect the Big 10 to give USC a favorable schedule. Maybe the home and home matches will be scheduled like ND, but I doubt it.

    1. Cal75,

To solidify what you are saying, I went back to New York in February. When I got back there, it was -22 below zero. I had a thermal shirt and leggings on, layers of shirts, a Raider jacket, scarf, gloves, and wool socks. We walked NY from Central Park to Battery Park in the dead cold of winter. No fun. If your feet got cold or your socks wet, you are done for. I have lived in snow and I have dealt with winter, just one word, horrible.

  9. Scooter,

This could make the deal sweet, Have SC play all of the away games in Sept through late Oct and then have the Big 10 teams come out for the rest of the season through late Oct through Nov. SC avoids the cold and the the visiting teams get a little warmth. Then for ugly do the opposite, have them play the visitors during Sept through mid October and then have them go to the east coast from mid Oct through Nov. That is fair.
