USC Morning Buzz: The Move To Oregon That Didn’t Happen

USC assistant coach Donte Williams interviewed for the defensive backs job at Oregon after Dan Lanning was hired as coach, according to sources.

Williams was the preferred choice of Ducks defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi but Lanning wanted to go in another direction.

It shows Williams was prepared to leave USC after Lincoln Riley got hired. It might have been a coup for the Ducks in 2020 to get Williams back. In late 2021, not so much.

  2. I can’t understand the post. It doesn’t make sense to dump on Williams when he’s only an assistant coach. Alex Grinch job is on the line, Williams may leave after one year, why insinuate that he can’t coach when as a writer, you couldn’t do his job? That’s why Scott Wolf is considered a germ spreader. Hopefully your banned from USC forever. Who cares about the freaking assistant coach? It’s nonsense.

  3. Lanning coached with the new DB coach at Sam Houston State in 2014. It took some time before it was announced publicly that Donte was going to be retained.

  7. Williams was thrown into the fire at a s’mores cookout. He was between Graham and Todd, who both thought the job should have been their’s. The head marshmallow (Helton) was given two coordinators who were uncoordinated they got rid of him second game, in their quest to take over the team.
    Harrell was like a college freshman at a girl school dance- all passes no running. Orlando was like the old man and the sea, no tackle, just trying to land one big fish.
    Williams knew football, but never got the respect he needed from the staff, team or fans. He might be a good head coach someday, but after years of having a coach that was on the job training, another OJT coach was not what was needed.
    This year might look good for his unit and whatever recruiting “it” he was hired to bring might yet serve the Trojans.

  8. Donte has this upcoming season to recruit like he is touted and then coach like he is qualifed for the position. LR will decide when season ends I am sure.

  9. We whiffed on another o line prospect, Lucas Simmons. I assume at some point we will get kids here, but so far Riley is 0-3 on the blue chip o line recruits.
