ESPN Gives Donte Williams Some More Hype

ESPN has named Donte Williams as one of its 45 minority coaches under 45 to watch for head-coaching jobs.

I know how hard it can be to put a list together, especially with 45 coaches.

But didn’t we get our fill of Williams last season? That wasn’t exactly a stellar audition.

Frankly, former USC running backs coach Mike Jinks impressed me more and he actually has been a head coach (at Bowling Green).

But Jinks doesn’t cultivate an image that the fanboy media likes or draw attention to himself. So ESPN goes with Williams. And Jinks is 50, which matters somehow.

    3. The only thing I blame Donte Williams for, is not firing Graham Harrell on the spot, and replacing him with a chimpanzee. Because anyone would’ve done a better job then Harrell.

  2. Mike Jinks should’ve never got fired. He should of been named interm coach instead of Williams. USC would of more games last year with Jinks as head coach.

    1. I don’t know. Which games do you believe SC could have won if Jinks had been the coach instead of Williams? That was an all-time poor SC team last year.

      1. Answer: Arizona State, Cal and BYU — btw, USC was picked as a top 15 Team last year — they just mostly packed it up when they were left “coachless”….

    3. Donte Williams didn’t call the offensive or defensive plays, and neither would Mike Jinks. Head coaches are only as good as their coordinators. And even with the USC platform, Clay Helton didn’t have the ability to hire quality coaches away from top programs like most big time programs do.

  4. Espn, the clown network, has shown again how mediocre they are. There seems to be zero research into how well Donte did. He can recruit, but his backfield is so porous other teams laughed at them. HC??? Espn, the clown network, needs to worry about Fox taking over as they soon will.

    1. Donte’s a nice man ….but…he was so over his head as Head Coach —- the post game interviews in which he constantly referred to how much losing “sucked” were the most embarrassing Head Coach interviews I ever watched….

  5. Not a put-down, but Donte isn’t head coaching material. He’s a good recruiter and can perhaps be a good position coach. He seems like a quality person that you would want in your program.

    2. You are right Charles, perhaps if he can hold onto his job at USC he will get to see how it is done and learn from one of the best. He was learning from one of worst last year.

    3. Not everybody is head coaching material. Paul Hackett and Dave Wannstedt were very good NFL coordinators but unsuccessful as head coaches. Pitt tried both of them. Many others here.

    1. Hey GT, proof is in the pudding. Lets see how well coached these guys are this year. We are supposed to have some rushers this year so perhaps some pressure can be applied on the opposing Qb.

  8. June is gone and so is half of July– hence, practice begins in 3 weeks and the season begins in 3 weeks after that. So it is about time to get excited. So what are the predictions for the season?

    Rice– this will be its Super Bowl so don’t expect a laydown

    Stanford– I recall Stanford taking down J.T. Daniels early a few years back; will ‘Celeb’ withstand the onslaught?

    Fresno St– A pretty good team

    at Oregon St– Ever been to Beaver Stadium with its intimidating chainsaw “music?” And the Beavers have gotten better.

    ASU– maybe this will be an easy win

    WSU– ditto

    @ Utah– Watch out!

    @ Ariz– a potential laydown

    Cal– will probably revert to usual form (losers!)

    Colo– another potential laydown

    @sucla– They have most of the same guys returning from 62-33 last year. Who knows?

    ND– Again, who knows?
