Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz Doesn’t Sound Thrilled About Big Ten Expansion

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz spoke today about the Big Ten adding USC and UCLA. He didn’t take the company line.

“Yeah, it’s a sign of the times. Just it’s one more reminder that tradition, the sense or concept of tradition is kind of getting minimalized I think in college athletics.

“Pretty much everything’s driven by TV. There are a lot of things I can’t tell you after 23 years. How the NCAA works, all that stuff. One thing I have observed is if TV wants something, it’s probably going to happen.

“It’s really not a matter of do we like this or did we want this? It’s just a matter of that’s a reality of college football, college athletics. Just like it’s a reality that USC and UCLA are going to be in the Big Ten in two years, so whether you like that.”

    1. Why is Kirk Ferentz so upset that the Big Ten added two soft teams to the conference? Didn’t Iowa manhandle the Trojans like rag dolls in the Holiday Bowl a few years ago ? Ferentz should be delighted that Lincoln Riley can’t recruit 4&5 star linemen, because that means another guaranteed win the next time they meet. Btw, I left the USC athletic department in great shape. Fight On! ✌🏽

  4. The coach is 100% correct. It is all about TV revenue. Tradition means nothing. So we go forward and accept it for what it is and cash the check. I feel like the piano player in the whore house or one of President Biden’s staff.

    1. I don’t disagree with Ferentz, but Iowa’s going to maintain their rivalries and only play USC and UCLA every other year at most.

  7. Come on, coach. SC-Cal and SC-Arizona were never great traditional games.

New traditions will be in the making, such as SC-Ohio St and SC-Michigan!

But he is right-on about Satan Television– “And the people bowed-and-prayed

I can make you believe any lie
I can make you pick a fight
        With somebody twice your size

Well I’ve been known to cause a few breakups
And I’ve been known to cause a few births
I can make you new friends
Or get you fired from work

And since the day I left Milwaukee
        Lynchburg and Bordeaux, France
Been making the bars lots of big money
        And helping white people dance

I got you in trouble in high school
But college, now that was a ball
You had some of the best times
        You’ll never remember with me
        Alcohol, alcohol”

  9. So Cal’s recollection is remindful of a similar, but more universal song:

    “I’ve been alive forever
And I wrote the very first song
I put the words and the melodies together
I am music and I write the songs

I write the songs that make the whole world sing
I write the songs of love and special things
I write the songs that make the young girls cry
I write the songs, I write the songs

My home lies deep within you
And I’ve got my own place in your soul
Now when I look out through your eyes
I’m young again, even though I’m very old

Oh, my music makes you dance
And gives our spirit to take a chance
And I wrote some rock ‘n roll so you can move
    Music fills our heart
Well, that’ a real fine place to start
It’s from me. It’s for you
It’s from you, it’s from me
    It’s a worldwide–symphony”

    1. Barry almost didn’t record the song according to 70s on7 SiriusXM. He thought it was too pretentious. Barry wrote Jingles for McDonalds, Pepsi and Band-aides. My sister was always in love with him. I have heard more Barry than any straight male should endure.
