USC Saturday Buzz: Big Ten Repercussions

Ever since USC and UCLA decided to move to the Big Ten, I’ve wondered if the UC Regents might make UCLA give some of its newfound money to Cal as a way to lessen the financial blow to the Bears.

Well, Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News reports it is something being considered. Now a lot of time these big bureaucratic organizations discuss things and nothing happens.

But if the Regents decide to reduce UCLA’s state allocations as a way to subsidize Cal’s athletic department, it would make the Big Ten move less attractive. How much less? That depends on how much money would be involved.

Again, let’s see what (if anything) actually happens down the road.

  • John Canzano reports that UCLA athletic director Martin Jarmond has been removed from his five-year term on the men’s basketball NCAA Tournament selection committee by the Pac-12 and replaced by Arizona athletic director Dave Heeke.

Canzano said the Pac-12 also contacted USC athletic director Mike Bohn about whether he would be allowed to participate in athletic director meetings scheduled in Los Angeles next week.

  1. No way sucla is backing out of its Big-10 deal.

They have a chance at $100 million eventually compared to, what, about $30 million currently. The State would have to do a lot of dollar-sucking for sucla to now say goodbye to the Big-10

      1. Michael, Gavin Newsom just gave a presser in which he thanked former DA Guarino for returning to the fold and help right the ship. (Actually, things would be a lot better off if Gavin listened to you).

  2. So the UC Regents are going to take money from UCLA and give it to underperforming Cal. Unfortunately, this doesn’t surprise me. We no longer live in a merit based system. Instead, we look for the best black female to serve as Vice President thereby eliminating 94% of the population and end up with Kamala (I’m a friend of Willy Brown) Harris – arguably the worse VP in the history of the republic. And a Supreme Court justice that can not define a women because she is not a biologist.

      1. I see plowhorse making a different point, which is that explicitly adopting identity politics as a requirement for appointments can and will deliver poor outcomes, and it also opens up a pandora’s box of which identity is one going to select for an appointment? And where does it ever end? I certainly hope that the new SCOTUS appointee is highly qualified. But in the case of VP Harris, I can’t think of an achievement she has delivered, and every survey shows that voters disapprove of her job performance, and substantially so. This was predictable, IMO, based on her past record.

      2. The San Francisco Chronicle and the L. A. Times never delivered the truth to voters on how much of a screwup Kamala was —- all they had to do was talk to her co-workers at the S. F. D. A.’s office or her staff at the California Attorney General’s office and they would have gotten a chance to see who the real Kamala Harris was —-but they didn’t do that.

      3. She’s not black. She’s Jamaican and east Indian.
She is the second worst. Spiro T. Agnew will always be #1 but he actually was far more qualified.
She can’t keep a staff together and she can’t avoid fruit salads. Neither an accomplished administrator nor a leader.

      4. btw, it should be obvious there are WAY better black female lawyers than Kamala in EVERY prosecution office in the state of California. If Kchingon wants names I’ll be happy to supply him/her with a list…..

    1. Hey, Mr horse…… I reviewed a comment you made the other day regarding how great Desantis was doing with covid…. The numbers are alarming!.

To date, Florida has averaged 63 covid deaths per day, with a population of 21 million. The worst in the country. Compared to California with double the population (40 million) which has an average of 38 deaths per day.

Desantis should be investigated for negligent homicide. I’m sure his numbers are even worse. We all know at one time he was hiding the true numbers.

      1. Gabby: This is the second time you have suggested that I am racist – that I judge people by their skin color or ethnicity as opposed to the content of their character. That is an accusation that I find highly offensive. You have no idea of the ethnic make-up of my family, or where we were raised, or what my family and I do for the community, where we attend church, or our system of values, but nonetheless you have no problem making such a statement. That is an indictment of your own character, not mine. My ideal is to have a color blind society. Your skin color or ethnicity doesn’t matter. How you treat others matters. The efficacy in which you perform your job matters. Is that your ideal? Or do you prefer CRT theory taught in schools to small children wherein children are separated by their color and ethnicity and told that they are either an oppressor or victim. My kids will not attend such a school. Do you prefer government appointments to high ranking positions based on skin color and sex as opposed to overall merit? That is the issue we are dealing with today. Where do you stand Gabby? My guess based on past experience is that you will not respond.

  3. The amazing gutties sports administration racked up over $100 million in debt over the last 3 fiscal years. Safe to say that the big 10 money will ultimately cover that debt. Over time, the state gov has provided less and less support to uc system, state support to ucla now about 30% of their budget.

  4. By the time this is all done, Jarmand’s mouth will end up costing fucla a lot of money and reputation. He’s already spoken impossible to retract words. ‘ The move will benefit …fucla… FB players’. HAHA All three that get drafted each year. He’s basically made a case for all FB players to be treated like employees. That’s gonna work out well. And what about the other non revenue sports? Maybe the Mountain West will offer some venues for them. Or how about women’s beach volley ball with Rutgers ?? What a treat.

Only fucla MBB is a national brand. Well it was at one time.

It was a conversation with Taylor Hackford’s campaign manager at a frat party that made me decide to run for ASSC Prez (against that year’s national debating champion, Ed Hurst, the editor of the Daily Trojan, Eric Cohen and the wonderful Joel Rosezweig, who made Tommy into a rock opera…..coming in ahead of two of those three was kinda cool cuz it was the best field ever…I loved all those guys, especially Joel)….

I ask what governor okayed the move to the PAC 8? ( from the pacific coast conference). Which one said by your leave to the expansion of the PAC 8 to the PAC 10 or 12 ?
Honestly Ucla doesn’t owe CAL diddly. If it did all the UC campuses need to pony up.
Anyway the teams are managed by the university campus otherwise all campuses would be expected to have sports across the curriculum.

  7. Jarmand’s comments as to why fucla made the decision it did is in direct conflict with the mission statement as to why the UC system exists.

You need not go any further.

    1. Half of the fucla roster is out of state. I do not believe that Jarmand’s bla bla bla rhetoric regarding the move includes those guys within the umbrella of why the UC system exists .

The UC system goal, in part, was to educate the top 10% of California students out of high school.

      SC has no such mandate.
