USC Morning Buzz: There’s A Civil War On NIL

Lincoln Riley said this week he wants USC to control all NIL deals.

“The best thing we could ever do is try to get it under one roof,” he said.

It’s the company line and if Riley is the public face, athletic director Mike Bohn is the private face.

I’ve heard Bohn has contacted donors and tried to keep them from being involved in the booster-funded “Student Body Right” group that is competing with USC-approved BLVD Studios.

“He wants to keep everything through BLVD and doesn’t want anyone joining the other group,” a donor said Tuesday. “They want to control it. It’s confusing to some donors, who aren’t sure which way is the best way and are staying on the sidelines with their money.”

The battle also includes lobbying former players who might be inclined to support Student Body Right.

“It’s all about choosing sides,” the donor said. “USC always wants the money.”

  • USC will do the Trojan Walk before Saturday’s game vs. Rice that was discontinued because of COVID-19. The Trojans will arrive in front of the Coliseum at 12:15 p.m. and make their way to the locker room.

  2. If I were BLVD I would try to get rid of that picture of Clay Helton donning that BLVD apron. That can only hurt their image in the eyes of boosters. 😂😂😂

  3. What exactly has SBR done to bring on such fear. Perhaps if USC were to enter into a spirit of cooperation they could have boundaries, areas of influence, and specific targets to work towards with both SBR and BLVD. I still think USC is still running around afraid of its shadow. Will the big bad ncaa come and sanction them? If they are doing what every other big school is doing, how could the ncaa hurt them.

      1. Michael,

If we vote with our concious, then idiots will vote for democraps because they will think it is great to get rid of student debt. I am voting with my pocket book and pur hate towards De Fuerer Biden, Gestapo Garland, Himmler Pelosi and Goring Newsom. Pur hate and contempt for them.

      3. Being Sicilian, I understand all there is to understand about Hate….but…. what I think we need now is Lincoln’s “malice toward none, charity toward all.” I don’t agree with one word of some of the posters’ politics —but as a trial attorney I respect their right to present their side [even if they are masters of invention and creating red herrings]. Two thirds of the people on this board —and two thirds of the people in this country —aren’t buying Biden/Pelosi politics. All I’m saying is –when the dust has cleared — and we’ve won in November—let’s not waste our time on vengeance —let’s end the 87,000 army of armed IRS agents and protect the American working class from the globalists intent on devouring them.
And, then, unite as a country again.

      4. Hey Mike this country will always be divided by race, money, and other special stupid shit….Like people on this board everybody has their opinion, but that dosen’t mean they are tighter wrong. Most people want Biden gone, because he is too old and corrupt too. I’ve worked for the City of Carson and Los Angeles, I didn’t agree with their policies. Furthermore, I am a Democrat who wants Biden to resign, not because he is old, but because I don’t like what he has become just a politician gracing training off what Obama did. If we don’t get it together as a nation of building trust among all races, economic levels we are going down, no matter what party you like, because you and john know best (Politicians are corrupt). I want to apologize to you and LJ for calling you a racist and narcissist or anybody else I might have offended with my opening post. #LetsAllGetAlongRIPRODNEYKING#WillAlways StandUpforOurDemocracy

      10. She’s not “too smart for that”, Michael, or she wouldn’t have posted it. Others stopped calling her out over it because they’re tired of the childish attacks. Not to mention the obvious signs of being bi-polar.

She ripped someone in her usual childish manner the other day and less than 24 hours later asked that same person, “Hey, what’s shaken?”

        Of course, he ignored her.

It would be hilarious, if it weren’t so incredibly sad.

  4. I’ve already addressed the civil war between BLVD VS STUDENT BODY RIGHT. Once again if u limit on how donors, boosters, regular joe moes, this will be the downfall of USC NIL COLLECTIVE. Do like they do in the NFL, NBA & MLB negotiations. 1) Have all the adults sit down at the table and discuss the main problems, they are having with the SBR. 2) It’s a no brainer let BLVD take care of Offensive recruits and SBR the Defensive recruits. 3) See my previous post regarding this issue. 4) CONTROL, CONTROL, N MORE CONTEOL, it doesn’t matter because SBR has a 501c status, make an agreement where between the two entities and hammer out details that benefit the SEMI PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES NOT THE CONTROLLING REGENTS, ADMINISTRATORS, COACHES. USC this is bad look for USC moving forward, they should raise as much money to get the best recruits to our fine university. IMHO, this debacle must nipped at the LA LA bud, before we lose out on 4/5 recruits who have to pick between the two collective’s. Please get out of your feelings put your big boy pants on and send the kids in the corner and stop acting like kids. #StopArrograntControllingRegentsFromTellingBigTimeDonorsWhereWhoTheyDomateTheir$$$$2.

  5. Depending on the X amount of dollars these kids are getting they should be made to stay an X amount of years.

If they receive between $1 – $5 million in endorsements they should be obligated to stay 3 years. Anything over $5 million they stay 4 years.

Something along those lines should be standard across the board for every school

  6. Scooter,

That is early for the walk. 2 hours, 45 minutes early. Are they afraid traffic will be so bad that they have to get there that early? At least they are doing the walk again. Good.

  7. Remember, they have to walk to the Coliseum, up the steps and down the steps, the length of the field, up the tunnel. They have meetings, taping of ankles, who knows how long it takes them to put the black stuff under their eyes, get dressed for pregame warm up, warm up, back to locker room and finish dress for game, last minute pep talk, then line up in the tunnel. A lot to do.

  9. Eric Turner, thank you for your kind words. I hope you give your daughters the love and guidance to provide them with armor from the unkind words. I graduated from Stanford with two engineering degrees and still had challenges fitting in with the guys. Then, I found sports and soon I was one of the guys. Better to find a common interest than to find differences. Hopefully, your daughters will learn they don’t need the approval of anyone if they are confident in themselves.

  10. If USC doesn’t get their act together on NIL then joining the BIG10 is going to be the least of their problems. It’s hilarious that Tommy Tubberville and Joe Mancin are trying to save the failed status quo. It’s time to get rid of all the old people in positions of leadership. They’ve failed humanity.

  11. USC wants to establish institutional control. That’s where the NCAA nailed us with last time. They pinned it on Reggie Bush, but it was the (fabricated) lack of institutional control that doomed the Trojans.
Student Body Right sounds great, but they are playing into the NCAA’s hands.
In other news UCLA might look better this year. According to an article I read this morning (man when a heat wave hits I’ll read anything) the team has been bolstered by portal transfers and revamped staff. We shall see Saturday if the newspaper is correct or belongs in the bottom of the bird cage.

    1. I believe institutional control will be a big issue with language regarding the outdated policies of the soon to be disbanded PAC 12 & NCAA. Some laws in this country are controlled by real legislators for the good of the sport. If the NCAA wants to open up investigations about our NIL Collectives, they will waste their time. SBR legal counsel has made sure they are in compliance with the NCAA bylaws. As soon as they receive their 501 C 3 status, then they will be able to start raising money.

      1. If they work according to the rules they shouldn’t have a problem. Just don’t go beyond what anyone else is doing, stay between the lines and if one school gets in trouble, a whole bunch will too.

  12. LR is not going to go against what the university says. But competition always makes things better. When you have monopolies taking over you lose in the area of quality and also in the money aspect. As far as I know, the university can’t stop Student Body Right from operating on their own. Therefore, they should, if for no other reason but to keep Blvd. on their toes to bring in the recruits. Globalists, communists always try and get rid of competition. Capitalists welcome it.

    1. Well, barker27, stating that this is “The end of amateur college athletics,” is an untrue exaggeration. These super-talented college kids have for the last 50-years at least received cash benefits ‘under the table.’

The great Eric Dickerson, of 1980s SMU fame, bought down SMU with a years-long prohibition sanction, the death penalty, for admitting to have received cash money to influence him to play at SMU

  13. Student Body Right is very similar to a program at Notre Dame. They want to involve charities and make it a very positive thing. Why would ANY administration object to that?

Honestly, if Bohn keeps up this control freak thing, I will start to post nasty shit about him again. Folt and Bohn need to wise up and stop being the gestapo here. Folt is such a pathetic little munchkin of an administrator.

I really hope USC loses complete control of their fraternities, alumni and to some extent football program. The BOT needs to understand that it is time for this administration to go.

Let Bohn tell us it was his partnership with, controlling Stay Doubted and Blvd that brought us the Natty. Not the players or coaches #I’mNotFondOfADnPresidentwhoRSelfishnCONTROLLING
