USC-Oregon State Live Blog

USC survives a woeful effort on offense and defeats Oregon State, 17-14.

USC takes back the lead as Caleb Williams finally finds Jordan Addison for a 21-yard TD.

The offense has been pathetic and it backs up the defense as OSU starts a drive on the 22-yard line and Jam Griffin scores on an 18-yard TD run. Oregon State 14, USC 10.

Oregon State has two key penalties inside the red zone and then misses a 46-yard FG.

USC finally breaks through on a TD run on fourth-and-2 from the 7 by Travis Dye. Trojans lead, 10-7.

Not a great half for USC or Caleb Williams. Imagine what a Big Ten crowd will be like if 26,000 in Corvallis can give USC problems.

Eric Gentry stops the USC slide with an interception.

USC dropping a clanger offensively in the first half

Lincoln Riley calls third timeout and there is still 11:19 left in the first half!

USC trails for first time this season.

The Trojans’ defense gives up the TD on a 4-yard run by Deshaun Fenwick. Oregon State 7, USC 0.

USC allows a 24-yard pass play on fourth-and-four. Alex “Scotty” Grinch has to be livid. USC doesn’t seem to know how to handle an offense with a fullback.

Caleb Williams off to rough start (1 for 6 for 11 yards) and now Denis Lynch misses a 36-yard FG.

Caleb Williams completes first pass of game to Brenden Rice for 11 yards.

USC has burned two timeouts in first seven minutes of the game.

USC does not a score a TD on opening drive for first time this season.

This could be the final meeting ever between USC and Oregon State.

Travis Dye rips a 36-yard run and then Caleb Williams throws a couple incomplete passes.

    2. Surprised by Riley’s not very smart, over-anxious play calling, surprised by Caleb’s bad timing [and his pointing to everybody else for his mistakes], not surprised by our poor d-line is getting pushed around by a very good 0-line….

      1. I thought that their D-Line played fairly well but not great. They had no sacks and only 3 TFL. Their back 7 on defense really played well, especially their secondary. The receivers haven’t been open for 2 games now. Caleb has had 2 bad games in a row. He was missing on passes. He was atrocious on play clock management. In the first half, they had to call 3 timeouts to keep from getting play clock violations and then they did have one play clock violations. The one thing that Caleb did do well is he was very elusive and kept gaining yards with his legs when he should have been sacked.

  2. Worse start of Riley / Caleb era.

I guess the 8 & 4 team showed up rather than the 7th ranked undefeated team.

    Tough to watch.

Having PTSD thinking that Helton is back.

      1. Cal, UCLA, Utah, Washington State and ND are all good teams. This schedule is not as easy as many thought it would be at the start of the season. The Pac-12 is actually pretty good this year.

  3. RUN THE BALL OREGON STATE IS GIVING YOU THE RUN.
    RUN THE BALL!
Oregon State is taking away the big pass explosive plays….to win this one USC must drive the ball down the field with run, and then go to the passing game as the 2nd choice. It is very obvious Oregon State will not let USC beat them with the pass so make the adjustment Lincoln Riley if you don’t it’s definitely a loss tonight.
Very disappointed in Lincoln Riley’s play calling tonight why did he abandon the run???

  4. Stick with Dye and the run game and we’ll be fine. Coach has to stop trying to get Caleb the highlight plays and pound the beavs! Run it down their throats in the second half! ✌🏻

  5. What should have been our staff is across the field- if that staff had our talent we’d be back and a contender. But we got the media sizzle, szzzzzz! (Until we lose.) I still think USC pulls this out, not giving up on my pick. And I still think that LR has shows the ability to learn and improve– the roll outs, the screens, the misdirection to, a few tricks, not just running the Gd counter trey as his rushing play… Plus more belief. That said, the refs seem to be always on our side as the PAC tries to get their last chance to get someone into the playoffs. Meh, I’ll take it.

    1. yeah, USC was lacking this game. In a do or die game, caleb should have been pulled. but not all wins are easy or deserved. quite a learning experience. the Zebras helped, too.

  6. That was a great game. Oregon state played an outstanding. Referees stayed out of the game. USC shouldn’t be undefeated. This was the game they are supposed to lose. I love this story that’s unfolding. Fight on fellas, if she ain’t pretty, she will be after some beers.

  7. What did I tell you Eric Gentry is the star of the defense. I got to give the defensive Coordinator for a great plan. Our calling card is the 7’4 wingspan n tip ball drills. Great job filling the gaps n the running game. These are the kinda of games we won like from 03-05. Now let’s clean up William’s mechanics was very much off the last 5 quarters. Let’s do some rollout n easy throws to get him in a rhythm LR moving. Great game. I’m seeing my magical season evolving

    1. I said before the season started that USC would have a lot of interceptions. That’s because Gentry is taking away the opposing QB’s passing lanes with his 7’2″ wingspan.

      1. Correct, Gabby. Generally the team that out-rushes and out -passes the other team is the winner.
        F. U. needs to take a deep breath and check out the box score on this one.
        The right team won.

    1. If you were just to look at the box score, you would have thought that SC won the game because SC won the statistics. But I will grant you that lady luck was on our side. We could have very easily lost this game. If Haskins doesn’t recover that Travis Dye fumble or of we don’t get the Nilan Nudge, we probably would have lost the game.

On the other hand, Grinch has so much less talent to work with than Riley & his side of the ball is doing okay….

      3. Actually, now that I think about it –we’re gonna have to score like 80 points to get back to 50 a game. [Maybe the Rice game wasn’t such a great indicator]…..

    1. I’ve complained about this defense from the start. But actually, I’m beginning to think that this defense is much better than I thought. Their pass defense is in another universe compared to last years pass defense.

  8. Gabby, the LT is a liability. The leaders on defense still are playing selfish. Look at how many times the Beavers either cut back to open lanes or broke tackles against Trojan defenders. Caleb needs to stop with the stare down my primary read tactics and manipulate the coverage better like a pro QB or veteran does. Special teams showed up much better this week. If you think this was bad then don’t watch the Utah game, it won’t be for the faint of heart. Me? I’m enjoying this for what it’s worth because the majority of these players are Helton’s recruits and they are responding brilliantly. Remember, the Beavers averaged 30+ points per game this year and were at home for the last time (forever) against USC. This was their Rose Bowl/CFP playoff/ game of the century. That they were punked by the Torjans is comedy because next year will be much harder to beat this USC program.
