Quick Thought: Let’s Talk USC Coaching For A Second

A couple things with USC not playing until tonight:

Jaxson Dart was poorly coached last season. You can see some old habits that Lane Kiffin is dealing with this season after an erratically coached first year for Dart.

  • Speaking of poor coaching, let’s talk Donte Williams for a second.

Does he teach is corners to hold and grab? If you talk to good coaches, the rule is if you are close enough to the wide receiver to touch them, you don’t need to touch them.

For the past three seasons, USC corners have been very grabby under Williams.

At this point, someone will point out USC’s interceptions this season. The safeties, coached by Alex Grinch, have four interceptions. The corners have three.

It’s also irrelevant because it’s about fundamentals, not stats. You don’t want that grabbing to cost USC a game down the road.

    1. onewayusc you are right about Alabama Db the get burned a lot n grab because they are over hyped to me. Wolfe find out how and why the NCAA and all of conspiracy of the stopped our Alabama run with Pete Carroll. They knew they wasn’t going to be able to beat So sanctions took us from the National College hierarchy. Where was Ohio. St, Alabama, Clemson Georgia, during the Pete Carroll dynasty . Look those teams came up because they stripped us from getting enough elite talent to supply depth.

    2. LOL!

      Utah blew out OregonSt.

Oregon St. the same team full of 3 star and below recruits that you clowns built up and hyped up, saying they were some great team, claiming that USC’s win over them was some great accomplishment…what a joke!

      1. Did you watch the game? Oregon State outgained Utah passing AND rushing. I’ve seen plenty of games where the superior team loses on a fluke …but never before have I seen one where the better team gets crushed in the final score …

      2. 23 to 16 going into the 4th period.
        OSU folded on the road.

Utah is “beatable” by a focused, well-coached USC team.
Gonna require a good game plan on both sides.

Oregon State won’t be as lucky —every time they’re about to score they do something dumber than the last time they were about to score [the 8 yard toss up the middle to a double covered receiver was a topper —wowsie]….

      1. Looked like O St. was ready to go in and cut the lead, 24-28. But the new QB was staring down his receiver and BAM, int, with a nice return attached. This led to a 14-point swing…… momentum is all in the Utes’ favor…..they might hang 50+ on them.

I’m always pulling for Kiffin. Now with Dart on the team, it gives me more of an incentive.

      1. OJ was found to be innocent, that’s all that matters. He’s now looking for the real killer.

I realize fools claim that Not Guilty does not mean Innocent. But we are not guilty until proven otherwise, therefore he remains innocent.

IF he did it he’ll answer to a Higher Power all in due time, as we all will.

      2. Btw — the legal meaning of NG is “prosecution did not meet their burden of proving case beyond a reasonable doubt to the unanimous satisfaction of the jury.” No one who knows jack about the law equates NG with “innocent.”

      3. Yes, we all know no one in the system equates NG with innocent. One of many reasons our criminal justice system is viewed as broken and corrupt.

  5. Scott, what did Donte Williams ever do to you? Why do you hate him so much?

Last season Donte took a role that was completely terrible as an interim head coach with no power. This year, his DBs are hit and miss. We will have a better idea of Donte’s coaching skills by the end of the year, although this is a Grinch defense and he is the safeties coach, so the pass coverage might be as much about Grinch as about Donte.

If Donte can teach his DBs to tread that line between PI and good defense, so what?

I want to see more Domani on the field. And throw in some Zion Branch today. The future of USC backfield looks pretty bright.

    1. I think a lot of people [me included] got down on Donte cuz of his clueless post game comments —but, looking back, Donte is the one who got the o-line to begin playing like football players….and did his best to lead a team without an experienced QB [and almost beat a very solid BYU team]…..

  6. The writer tries to explain pass coverage in today’s college football where at least every team throws the ball 30 times a game. “I don’t want to see it called during a game and it costs us.” This guy never put on the straps, lay the wood or blew a whistle during a college game. Pass defense requires linemen getting pressure (sacks are nice but pressure up the middle is the best) linebackers moving to the correct depth and db’s being thugs and thieves because the other guy is trying to take your NFL money. You want touch tight? Play on a pitch. You want the next level? Know how to play physical and sticky. And knock the freaking ball, receiver, lineman or your momma down. These coaches will find someone who can. McCutcheon is learning what it takes to get on the field, just like Foreman.

  7. I think that Utah may have a problem next week if UCLA plays defense the way USC plays pass defense because the Utes look kinda slow. UCLA has a better roster than Utah but Willingham is a better coach.
They couldn’t handle Florida’s speed and athleticism and Richardson isn’t as good as DTR or Caleb Williams. Plus, don’t look now but the Cal Bears (!) could go on a win streak up until the UCLA game and get some serious love from the Big 10 to join the party. Stanford will have to fire Shaw to get any consideration to join . . .maybe Harbaugh will take his silly self back to the Farm after he gets embarrassed by Ohio State?
