Marvin Powell, one of the greatest linemen in USC history, has passed away, according to the New York Jets. He was 67.
Powell was an All-American in 1975 and 1976 and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. For some reason, he is not in the USC Hall of Fame.
Powell was a five-time Pro Bowl selection, three-time All-Pro and Jets Team MVP in 1979.
“Marvin was one of the best linemen I’ve ever seen,” said former Jets wide receiver Wesley Walker upon hearing of Powell’s passing. “He was just a physical specimen. He was just good. I just loved him.”
Powell was the No. 4 pick in the first round of the 1977 NFL Draft.
He is the only tackle to be selected MVP in the Jets’ first 62 seasons.

Now he is what a Trojan player looked and played like…not the pouter’s that are on the team these days

Inner Tebowobama: Reminds me of another story about my old granddad Old Lukey (aka, Ol Mule Shoe). He was such a kidder, he once told me there was no no tooth fairy, just a big ol’ green monster that would leave the lagoon at night to sleep under my bed. He told me not to worry since the monster hardly ever ate kids.

Prayers out to his family; he was a great one. Those who played in the NFL sadly face a much shorter lifespan than others, 7 years shorter than those who played MLB. Heart disease and neurodegenerative conditions are the major issues:

He had a son on the USC team in the 1990’s. I remember he is his namesake too – Marvin Powell III.

We’re talking about my pal Lawyer John, right? All I can say is I hope the guy comes back. He was a versatile writer –sometimes philosophical, sometimes funny…and always entertaining. We’re poorer if he doesn’t come back.

Caleb and Jordan and Mario are huge talents —but Dye is the heart of the team.
When things get tough against Washington State & Utah —Dye will keep the team going.

Good bless Travis Dye. He’s a senor and he won’t tolerate guys too willing to play with themselves and not bring it in practice.

Don’t know why he isn’t in SC Hall either…should be.
As long as he is in Gods, through Jesus Christ, is all that really matters

Where is OWNS? Did he turn decide to really turn into a “real” loyal Bruin fan since UCLA has survived thus far with a cupcake schedule.

I am hoping that (a) Owns is tebow or T Bruins …or… (b) Owns returns soon! He’s one of our InsideUSC brothers….

I met Marvin during our first semester at USC in 1973. We had a speech class together. He was a great guy then and for the next four years we always stopped and chatted a few minutes when we saw each other on campus. He was a fine man and someone of which all Trojans can be proud. His family is in my prayers.
