Sunday Buzz: USC-Washington State Refs Incense Both Sides

The officiating, of course, drew the ire of USC and Washington State fans.

There was a dodgy offensive pass interference call on Jordan Addison. Washington State was irate over a holding call that nullified an interception and a pass interference call.

But we keep getting told the officiating is getting better.

  • USC dropped a spot in the AP Top 25 poll to No. 7. Tennessee moved up two spots after its 40-13 victory over LSU. The Trojans remained No. 6 in the coaches’ poll.

    1. You didn’t miss much Eddie, only that SC and sucla are both 6-0, their usual standings this time of year.
Oh, you missed Washington St’s cartoonish cougar mascot that had fans longing for the return of the real cougar from long-ago years.

‘Celeb’ got bounced around like the 7&10 pins from a bowling strike
The outcome of the game for SC turned on a bad Pass Interference call

sucla exposed Utah but yet the indian-named Utes are favored over SC

Other than that your time spent with the “litel poeples” was time well spent

      1. Hey, John! So Utah’s a 3 point pick over USC? That’s just home field and weather, right? [But] How should we feel if the spread grows every day till game time? Do we give a shit? The oddsmakers have been more off this season than I can ever remember.

  1. The loser institution known as the NCAA needs to figure out how the game should be called, and make sure that calls are consistent within conferences and across conferences. Right now it is a huge quality control problem. If coaches and players know how the game will be called, they can prepare accordingly and the quality of the product will skyrocket.

Scottie, don’t forget the no-call on roughing the passer on Caleb. The referee was standing less than 10 feet away, he watched it unfold, and swallowed his whistle.

    1. 67 — Wouldn’t you love to get your hands on all the internal Pac 12 emails dealing with officiating and officials?
On another topic –I’m glad USC dropped a ranking point. It’s meaningless in the Big Picture —but it’s one more piece of motivation for a team that needs to really bring it next week.

      1. I agree putting Tennessee ahead of USC in the polls. Can’t say I am sorry to see Bryan Kelly and his fake bayou accent get shellacked. Tennessee got the right HC, they are one of the biggest stories in college football.

      2. [And…the truth is…USC would’ve beaten LSU even worse….. But who cares, right? The One & Only thing that matters now is NOT the AP Poll….it’s playing 4 quarters of “attack” football in Salt Lake….no more of this “we don’t wanna lose” mentality, more of “we wanna crush the shit outta ya” mentality]…..

  2. Well this is the last time SC will ever have to play WSU or OSU. Next year it’s Oregon and Washington and more PAC refs And more whining. I can hardly wait for Guarino’s complaints to begin.

    1. Here’s to hoping that we still hear from you after the 2023 season, Cal.

When one looks at the SEC and Big 10, and a fair part of the ACC, most FB teams have stadiums with cap’y over 70,000–AND HAVE NO PROBLEM FILLING their home stadium.

In the Pac North, only Cal and UW are at that cap’y level. While I have been a lifetime Pac-8 fan, I just don’t see trips to Autzen, Reiser, the Palouse, and the NEW FARM (50,000?) as in the best interest of CFB moving forward.

USC and UCLA fans will have to adjust and attend home games avidly, or this move to the Big 10 will be horrible. I think a new Pac 10 which focuses on their organic product could be a nice regional entity.

    2. The Pac 12 will behave next year because they don’t want the schools to leave the conference. USC and UCLA will have to schedule non-conference foes so the left-behinds can play the Trojans in non-con games and experience competent referees in the future.

  3. The officiating did not seem too bad to me this time.
There are (and have been) worse. Anyone miss Mike Mothershead?
    Jay Stricherz?

Both targeting calls were spot on.
The call vs Addison was horrible, as he was TIGHTLY double teamed.
There was a flag against a USC DB (Blackmon) for PI that was picked up as the pass was uncatchable in bounds. The illegal substitution call which set up a first down and TD for Wazzu was tight. Those of you who learned FB at the Pee Wee level learned to SPRINT OFF THE FIELD as fast as possible. The present athlete saunters off.

Maybe I’m wrong, but Pac 12 football seems a little better now. Some better coaches and players, and maybe some better officiating. Pac 12 network? Still sux. Anyway, ask me again in January after Bowl Season.

    1. Officiating?! We need to spend a little more time bitching ’bout the broadcast team —they sucked way worse than the officiating…. “USC wasn’t even close to stopping that!”…. “that Washington State T. D. was TOO easy!”…..

    2. I’m actually in agreement with Bourbon on the refs. They got both targeting calls correct and they rightfully picked up the PI flag because it wasn’t a catchable ball. I was at the game and my complaint about the refs is that every call generated a 10 minute discussion. The DJ even played the Jeopardy theme song a few times. They turned a 3 hour game into a 4 hour game.

But we should all be thrilled about the 6-0 start (including
Wolf). The team makes adjustments at halftime, they are committed to the run, and there is a disciplined culture with few penalties. We still need another year or so to get players on both O & D lines and more linebackers to be able to compete with the big boys. This always was a 2 year project. But there is optimism and excitement again at the Coli.

    3. The 12 men penalty was on the zebras, total mechanical failure. Wazzu subbed late and someone was supposed to run in and stop the Wazzu offense from snapping the ball. Riley lit the line judge up because he was supposed to whistle a timeout and let the head ref know that Wazzu can’t sub with 15 seconds or less on the play clock. It was a penalty on the offense for subbing while in formation. The game and hype got to the entire crew. So many errors it was worse than an L A City football matchup.

      2. I recall him predicting Stanford was going to run for 400 yards. And here is a cut and paste from tebow obama from the oregon state game blog post:

“USC is playing worse than they did last year vs Oregon St. USC will lose this game by 20.”

        There are dozens more.

  4. These PAC12 refs are the worst. I wish our corners would stop putting there hands on receivers when there is no need. If your running stride for stride just use your god given ability and locate the ball instead of trying to hold their jersey in front of these PAC12 refs. We will not get into CFP if we don’t show we are complete team AP dropping us one spot because we don’t blow people out.

      1. There can be contact; it is a judgment call by the official as to whether the contact is “an obvious attempt to impede the receiver on a catchable ball.” Lots of PI penalties we’ve seen this year don’t satisfy that definition IMHO.

      2. If you think about it…there almost HAS to be some incidental contact by the defender on every break up….. which gives suspiciously incentivized refs the chance to make the call ANYTIME they feel like…

      3. Interview with Mekhi Blackmon here:

Halftime D adjustments were on gapping, and he talked about some missed assignments leading to the Wazzu long runs. Fixable stuff. And check out his smile when asked about the officiating.

      4. I love our players’ attitudes this year. They sound so focused and sharp. Really impressive, smart bunch!
You can’t help rooting for this team. It seems like they don’t listen to that voice Helton always heard when games got tough [“Maybe we’re gonna lose”]….. they listen to the one deeper than that, the one that sez “We’ve got this”…….

  5. I watched highlights to see that safety where the runner was called down at the end of the first half. Watching it in slow motion, you can very, very clearly see that the runner’s right leg pivoted around on his foot and the knee/shin never touched the ground, and the ball was clearly out of the runner’s hands at at that time.

There is simply NO WAY a replay official who is unbiased can make that call. It is right there on tape for him to watch. I’m sure they have higher resolution systems than my computer looking at a replay, so it would have been so easy to spot that the knee was not down.

The ONLY explanation is that the replay official didnt want USC to close out the half with a safety. There is no other interpretation.

There are many calls that are subjective and quickly made on the field, but the replay officials should get it right if the camera angles allow them to see a play.

The film crew coverage of questionable plays is horrible. Half the time they dont show the footage. Feels like they want to cover up the horrible refereeing.

    1. Typical bullshit Fox coverage — DIDN’T show what they didn’t want the audience to see… add to that not-very-cleverly-disguised bias coming from the broadcast booth and you’ve got quite a fucked up product….

    2. It’s worse than that. The knee swings and never stops. If the knee “touched” the grass then it would slow or pause. The call was touch the ground and the video ref needs contradictory evidence to overturn the field call. Referees call the Pac 12 the Clown Conference because they are slow to change.
