USC Notes: An All-American Honor And Some Surprising Penalties

USC offensive guard Andrew Vorhees has been named to the Pro Football Focus Midseason All-American team.

I like Vorhees, who has overcome a lot of obstacles that the Clay Helton Era unfairly put him through, but does any USC linemen deserve to be an All-American?

Vorhees had two holding penalties in the Arizona State game, including one that nullified an 82-yard TD pass. That’s not really a critique but we’re talking about an All-American team. This is why I often question Pro Football Focus rankings.

  • The bye week is important for backup QB Miller Moss, who needs more reps. Before the season, you might think Moss would have played more in games like Stanford, Fresno State or Arizona State. But the ASU game turned out to be a lot closer than expected.

Caleb Williams is an exceptional QB but Moss needs more snaps in case of an emergency.

  • You know who has a lot of penalties this season from an unexpected spot? Wide receiver Mario Williams. He had two false starts and a holding penalty against Utah; two false starts against Oregon State and a pass interference penalty vs. Fresno State.

  1. What the fuck wolf!!! The kid makes a mid-season all-American team and you still want to throw him under the bus….. even the grinch showed some compassion.

      1. For USC supposedly having two All American offensive linemen Caleb Williams sure has gotten sacked and pressurrd a lot.

All American my ass! Those girls Voorhees and Tuli aren’t even All PAC 12, hell they might not even be All Bay League.

All American, those two Ladies of Troy, get the fuck out of here!

Jesus Christ, Trojan fanboys are really delusional today

  2. Obviously Wolf the work Vorhees puts out impressed enough people to supersede whatever you may think. USC guy gets AA honor and you put him down.

Biggest swing and a miss of the week, Tuli was named All American also. Did you miss that one? Perhaps you can bad mouth him in another post.

Meanwhile the rest of us are going to engage in football talk and divorce this blog from the stupid political merry go round. Lets all be friends, except of course for the fakes, Tebow, and anyone else that drags this blog down.

    1. After I read wolf’s disrespectful comment toward Vorhees, my next thought was, where is Tuli’s name, he earned it.

Thanks for letting us know there was another name from the team. Phil Steele usually has a list also.

    3. Scooter and steveg49,

Scooter forgets how many passes SC has throw for the entire season. I don’t know the count but at 6 games x 30 passes per game (estimate), that is 180 passes. So if he has two for 180 passes that is a 98% success rate. That is an A+ in some books.

      1. We all know wolf takes the glass half-empty mentality. It’s often reflected in his comments. 90% of his comments that I actually read, goes in one ear and out the other. I’m sure that would be consistent with the majority of us

  3. Vorhees ain’t perfect but he’s the best lineman on one of the best offenses in college football. He came in with preseason accolades and that got him on a midseason list. If you can think of a better candidate Mr. Wolf, then I suggest you submit that person to your friends who vote or compile that list since it’s apparent that your lack of gravitas failed to have your consideration on who should be acknowledged.

    1. I recall when wolf had a vote in the weekly AP football poll. He would move teams up when they had a bye week or was the only pollster not to rank USC #1 on a given week.

His actions were often called out by fellow reports.

      1. Yeah, you jogged my memory Gabby, giving Wolfie a vote in the AP poll was like giving Jack the Ripper an autographed OJ knife, and Scott rode with it in the only way he knows how, as a prima donna hell-bent on voting in a bizarre way to attract attention to himself

But we still love the guy anyway, kinda, and I have to hand it to Wolfie how he comes up with several SC items every day, some quite obscure, in order to tease posters to the writing boards

      2. I know you’ll concur, John — O J. and Jack the Ripper brought more bizarre attention to themselves than Scott…

    2. I am quite pleased with the O-LINE work so far this year.
No one has yet stuffed the run game.
Indeed, the run game has won USC a few games when the pass game struggled.

FPI has USC as the #2 offense in the nation. Yes, we played some lousy defenses, but the FPI takes that into consideration. O-line must be doing something good.

D-line…hmmm (besides Tuli and sometimes Fig)

      1. USC is an enigma wrapped in a mystery this year. The offense is hot and cold. The defense has completely different games from week to week.

I think that losing will make this USC offense play with more focus. They might also need to make some changes in who gets targets in the receiver room.

I looked at how USC’s offense ranked in the Pac-12 and they are behind UCLA, Oregon and Utah in many categories. I think this is due to the sporadic nature of the offense, but also how much time the defense spends on the field.

I want to see games where USC scores 35 points in the first half and is up by 21 or more points at half. That is what this offense is capable of. Not sure if the defense can do their job and get off the field.

      2. I’m not sure you’re gonna get your wish, gametv. USC’s offense thrives on athleticism, not focus. Looking back, we haven’t had one game where the offense played with nonstop focus …..outside …..of….Rice.

    1. Offensive holding sometimes accounts for why there was even a touchdown, especially when a tackler was in position to make a play before he was illegally held out of the play

      1. Holding is also a very subjective call and the refs have the ability to call that penalty on many plays where the hold has nothing to do with the outcome. I bet if we reviewed the tape, we would find that there is no rationale for how they call these things. Which makes it the perfect way for the Pac-12 to try to put Oregon or Utah into the championship.

      2. Face it —the refs were prepared to do whatever it took to give that game to Utah. The 3 penalties on our final 40 second drive says it all.

I remember when Chip Kelly was coach of Oregon, the rumor was that they would teach the O-Linemen how to hold and not get caught and, in the game, the Oregon O-Linemen used to hold and not get caught. In that game where Oregon beat USC 62-51( in 2012), they held on every play.

      4. ..and we had TD’s called back on our first 3 or 4 drives…. it was total Pac 12 bullshit all the way….

    1. LJ,

Because the game and win were taken away from SC by the refs. They had orders to not let SC win. They want parity. The Pac 12 cut off its nose to spite its face. SC might have been playoff bound. It is a harder road now for them because of the stupidity.

  4. Wolfe Vohrees was the top guard coming into the preseason idot. If PPF tabs u an All American then by the numbers you are . Look at Alabama Ohio St Georgia they don’t have anyone in the top 10 on any gaurd and tackle. Enough said about that n Tuli has had an outstanding season. We need for our offense n defense to get our act together these games. Play with reckless abandon get physical practice tackling with great technique. DC can we play press coverage to throw off the timing of the route. I rather get beat off of press coverage instead zone coverage. Never liked soft zone coverage because your telling the other team just throw short passes and we will move chains all night. Ditto Utah TE.

      1. PT: “hit the te coming off the line. Disprupt their pass route.”

During the game, I found myself constantly yelling out “Hit that guy(TE) you can’t let him get a free break off the LOS.”

I was seeing visions of when Stanford killed us with their TEs

  5. Defensive Coaching Staff LOST the football game against UTAH. Never let the other football team run the game Clock down to 48 Seconds… When UTAH was around USC 25 yard line with 4 minutes and 27 seconds left… Let the score so have at least 2 minutes left to move the football to go for a game winning Field Goal or Touchdown…
