Morning Buzz: USC Vs. Wisconsin Every Year?

Greg Flugahr, the Minnesota fan who went viral after being the first to report USC’s interest in joining the Big Ten, said one plan currently under consideration is for USC to have UCLA, Wisconsin and Illinois as its permanent rivals beginning in 2024.

Big Ten teams play nine conference games and three contests are vs. permanent rivals. Flugahr said UCLA’s permanent rivals would be USC, Nebraska and Northwestern.

  • Lincoln Riley on the two roughing-the-passer penalties vs. Utah.

“We’ll put those two up from the other night and tell them to do exactly what they did every single time,” he said.

        Get some type of life.

USC will be really good by next year and killer by 2024. We just need 2-3 recruiting cycles and for Riley and staff to be able to develop players. If anyone told me that USC would be 6-1, with the only loss to Utah on a last minute 2 point conversion, I would say Excellent!

      1. Esteemed Folks:

The real problem for USC, if it indeed joins the Big 10, is that the original members of that conference will always have the advantage of not spending inordinate lenght of time flying far round trips around the country like USC definitely will be doing. The weariness from that travel ordeal [it is an ordeal] is bound to make the Trojans less competitive in the B1G. I will explain that later.

As for how competitive Lincoln Riley and the Trojans will be in their new conference, as long as there’s a level playing ground, I won’t doubt the Trojans’ resolve [or the resolve of the 11 other PAC-12 teams.] After all this LA team and the other PAC-12 teams have been engaging the B1G teams in Rose Bowl games and winning.

And why does USC face the potential of not doing well in the B1G?

There is no level playing ground when you have to fly over 4,000 miles to play a game out East.

There’s also one potential problem, in fact inevitable problem, perhaps unforseen by many supporters of USC’s decamping from PAC-12:

That problem will be in recruitment and retention of student athletes in various sports.

For decades USC has been renowned as a fearsome recruiter of top talents in sports. However, why, henceforth, would a student athlete from the East commit to USC out West and face travel and study time issues, when he/she can simply commit to nearby Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State, etc where he/she will play over 90% scheduled games and spend less travel time doing so? Not many students will ignore that factor.
On the same token, why would a Western US student athlete commit to any sporting activity for the Trojans, knowing same decision to have undesirable travel, study, and free time implications?

Given those implications, it likely wouldn’t make a lot of sense anymore for some top athletes to commit to USC –especially when there are viable options East and West, and those options concentrated in one region of America for each conference.

In all, this move has the potential to make the USC athletic program a mediocre one as student athletes either look elsewhere or enter the transfer portal to pursue or complete their sports and academic endeavors.

Not too late for USC [and UCLA] to rethink their decamping initiatives, money isn’t everything.

        Go Cougs! Go PAC-12!

      2. Gabby,
From LAX to Philadelphia Airport en route to play against Penn State, for instance, the one-way flight distance is 2,401 miles and 4,802 miles round trip back to LA. And that’s a fact, and not an embellishment.

        Like

      3. So why would the return flight have an impact on what takes place on the field…..2400 miles is the correct scenario…..be honest with yourself, twisting facts to fit your agenda is lame

        Like

      4. Gabby:

The relevance of that round trip distance and time involved, are factors of consideration for a student athlete deciding whether to stay the course or not at USC [or UCLA], or not commit to play for the college, in the first place.

Student athletes equally serious about academics will choose the latter.

Again, USC will eventually be at enormous
disadvantage bolting from the “conference of champions” to join the Big 10 [I have already told you why and need not explain again.]

        Moving on…

In case you don’t know, as a college’s athletic records go –especially in football and basketball– so goes the revenue generated from sales of its athletic
merchandise. Just ask: the University of Nebraska Huskers, since Tom Osborne left with his winning ways; Florida State Seminoles, since Bobby Bowden left with his winning formula; etc.

It will likely be a blunder for USC to predict its success chances with the B1G conference based on its resounding success in the PAC-12.

        Go Cougs! Go PAC-12!

that if you even so much as touch a quarterback who has already released the ball you are forcing a ref to make a subjective penalty decision on the spot which obviously can sometimes work out dastardly

The thing the Pac 12 WANTS Riley to say is we’re gonna soften our rush to humor the refs who made bad calls in Utah —-he NEEDS to let opposing teams know we’re coming after it….same as always.
I appreciate your stand on the clock management…but… it’s good to remember timeouts can be used on offense too. Maybe Riley was saving those timeouts for our last drive [the one we got penalized 3 times on —what a crock a shit that was, btw].
One last thing — we didn’t have our best player and defensive signal caller in the game on Utah’s last drive.
Hope to see us get justice in the rematch.

    3. ..for sure, the second RTP penalty was not legit as the tackler hit the QB and altered the trajectory of the throw (infra vide).

The first RTP penalty was a dainty push.

I was already thinking earlier this week that Riles and Grinch should not have their Dlinemen change things one bit.

      1. Except for the fact, Bourbon, and a 1000-apologies for misconstruing your words recently, the “hits” on the Utah quarterback that dramatically changed the trajectory (outcome?) of the game did not require the SC rushers to even touch the quarterback, their effect had no bearing on the play, wasted motion actually, so go-after the quarterback that is one of the essentials of any football game, but coach these kids to understand that once the ball has been released even touching the guy risks a serious penalty.

        Like

      2. I agree that both hits on Rising did not really alter a poorly thrown pass, LJ. In both cases, the Trojan’s had engineered a stop.

But a rushing Dlineman does not know what is going on behind him. Part of the frustration of the two game-changer plays. Still, even in super slo-mo, neither RTP call were really “protective” of the QB.
The first one was a shove, the second one a clean hit as the QB was releasing the ball. I’m going with Brock Huard, a former QB himself.

Irrespective, LJ, we are the minority. Trojan alumni/fans. (Sometimes even former student-athletes). We are solid with each other. My second family….*

  3. Yeah George, that Utah game got under my skin like no other game I can think of,
and not because of the penalties but because of Wiley letting the clock run out.

Utah Coach Whitt saw that there were only 37-seconds left instead of the
Minute-30-seconds or so if Wiles had used his time-outs like he should have.

So Whitt undoubtedly is thinking “We have the momentum and 37-seconds is not sufficient time for most college teams to move the length of a football field, so let’s do it, let’s try to win this thing right now.”

As opposed to having a minute-30 left in the game, the thinking probably would have been altered to “Even if we make the 2-pointer to take the lead they have sufficient time to move the ball to within field goal range. The percentage play is to kick the almost automatic 1-pointer, tie the game up, and see if we can hold them to move into overtime”

Also, the financial risks outweigh the profits for Big Oil to drilling on North American soil. Importing oil and refining it into a usable product and then exporting it is where all the profit is.

Big oil relies on financial backing when exploring or building drilling sites. With that said, the investment coin related to fracking has dried up. At $40 a barrel by means of fracking, the oil companies were not turning enough profit.

Big oil made record profits over the last 18 months by selling exports. Sorry to debunk your claims

They couldn’t give oil away during the Trump Pandemic, but Big Oil sure are reaping profit now

On April 20th, 2020, the price of West Texas Intermediate crude oil slumped into negative for the first time in history, falling to negative 37.63 U.S. dollars per barrel. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has had a catastrophic impact on the global oil and gas industry. Declining consumer demand and high levels of production output are threatening to exceed oil storage capacities, which resulted in the lowest ever oil prices noted between April 20th and April 22nd.

    1. I’d want either Ohio State or Michigan to be on our permanent list. Of course, their argument against would be that they have long standing rivalries with other B10 schools. But heck, we’re walking away from some very long standing rivalries with Cal & Stanford.

We’ve all resigned ourselves to disposing of tradition and allowing the almighty dollar to dictate things. Let’s make sure our SOS remains high.

      4. We can go back and forth, playing one each year. They already have permanent rivals.

I want the BIG10 to poach Washington and Stanford. Then let us have the 4 West Coast teams as permanent rivals. But I want Oregon to be left behind in the cold and to wither as a program.

      5. So Cal. Neither Ohio State nor Michigan is going to allow the other to be on USC’s permanent list due to the recruiting advantage of coming out to LA every other year. The only way it would work is if the other team had UCLA on their permanent list and neither of them are going to let that happen either because the Bruins will suck way more often than not so it won’t be an even trade. That being said, the Big 10 is going to figure out a way to get Ohio State and Michigan out here almost every year so they can recruit. Sorta like the way the PAC 12 schedules to make sure everyone comes through LA every year.

  8. I dont like these permanent rivals. UCLA of course. But why Wisconsin? we dont want to send our kids up into the frozen tundra. Northwestern is in a bigger market, so USC would be a better rival. And it is also a high academic school, like USC. And isnt there more of a history of Nebraska being a blue blood team than Indiana?

USC should try to stay away from games played in the frozen cold, where our kids have a disadvantage.

I think the Democratic party machine just wants to put in place people who will do as they are told, since they cant elect the radicals that are truly in charge of that party.

Personally, with ND and a resurgent UCLA on the schedule every year, USC is already heading down a strong SOS when it joins the B1G.

    1. Hard to read those words:” resurgent UCLA.” But they’re true. Chip Kelly isn’t young or charismatic —but he’s a damn good coach and he’s fashioned a mostly 3 star cast into a formidable football team.
If we beat them at the Rose Bowl we’ll have proven how far we’ve come from last year’s debacle.

He replied and explained his thoughts on the subject. He didn’t have to do that. I’m the first to admit I’m a nobody. But he felt the need to defend his player.

Heck, Gundy’s “I’m a man” rant is what made me admire him and Chip did the same with Blount. No matter what someone might say about Chip as a coach, he’s a good man.

  16. Republicans want to stop the federal government from passing out a measly $20k debt relief for student loans that have a more than 6% carried interest. While it’s dumb to pass out a welfare check to Americans that need the aggregate loan student debt without LOWERING THE GROWTH RATE OF THE CONSOLIDATED LOANS, going to court to ask any judge to deny the executive office the jurisprudence to reduce the amount owed from these aggregated debt loads is the second dumbest court request in the history of law in America.

The dumbest being the lawsuits to contest the presidential election with a rate of 0 wins to 50 cases.

    1. Here’s the really pathetic part about the republicans in office. They are crying foul when it comes to helping struggling Americans get ahead of student debt.

But find it perfectly proper to throw away billions in unvetted PPP money to save capitalism. These are the same crooks that used socialism to save capitalism but now disapprove of helping people that actually need the relief……HYPOCRITES BEYOND COMPARE!

In contrast, the twice impeached grifter pissed away 12 trillion over 4 years, while Biden has actually saved the US Treasury 1.5 trillion over the last 12 months.

      1. But Democrats have to find ways to cut spending or be more efficient in how to allocate revenue for the government spending. If not, Biden will be facing a pension crisis-just like the British, of his own and finance collapse in the bond markets due to a shortage of bond buyers from sovereign funds. Saudia Arabia and China are two of the largest buyers of American T-bills.
