USC Saturday Notes: Lincoln Riley Imitates Pete Carroll

Why did USC go for 2 points last night with a 32-10 lead vs. lowly Colorado?

The reason was simple: The Trojans wanted to put something else on film for UCLA to worry about before next week’s game. That’s why the play was run last night and not in another game.

It’s part of the gamesmanship that happens. There is actually a precedent too. In 2001, USC played Cal and won, 55-14. Kicker David Davis scored a touchdown on a fake field goal 3-yard run. The following week USC played UCLA and Pete Carroll said he did it just to give UCLA something to worry about.

  3. I don’t think LR was showing SUCLA anything, he will throw out the whole play book next week. We still have a higher ceiling on offense. If Caleb can throw check downs to Releek that will be better than extending plays with our receivers still not netting a big play. Releek is ready to show his worth in these next 3 games. His speed is a difference maker.

    Don’t care for the cashless concessions. Yes, my stalker will say I’m an old fart and that’s fine. But I know I can’t be alone in not buying as much as I would if cash were still accepted, especially with the aisle/mobile concessions.

    1. MG, I predicted that this scenario would play out now that Washington has upset overrated Oregon. Now it doesn’t make a difference about their game next week. We beat SUCLA n Oregon beats Utah PAC 12 CG against Quacks. Their secondary is trash running game & Ol proved they can run the ball n keep our defense out on the field for long drives. Watching Arizona carve up SUCLA. Next week game is shaping up for us to make our mark as the defacto best team from the PAC12. To me just looking at Oregon Utah SUCLA, nobody is really head and shoulders above anyone. Any given Saturday you can be beat and that is no joke. Caleb is going 2 tear SUCLA secondary up mobile QB are killing PAC12 defenses.

    Top 4 teams have 1 lose each.

    After next week, 2 of 4 will have 2 losses.

    I believe SC is in P 12 championship game if they beat Ruins.
    If Utes win, we get our rematch. If Ducks win, we play Ducks.

    Does that sound right?

Ole Miss not a factor, Alabama out. LSU controls it own destiny and Georgia. The question is will Committee take both runner ups in the Big SEC even over a 1 loss team from PAC12 Big 12? We don’t know do we?

    3. No, LSU will have 3 losses after Georgia, TCU is in if they are undefeated, and so it will be between the loser of Ohio St-Michigan with one loss and a one-loss SC or sucla team, and the Committee may select that coveted No 4 slot to the team that finished best

LJ Hopefully the Committee will reward the team that played the best in Nov & Dec, regardless of how they won Everyone knows this is an offensive conference and each year it’s hard for any team to go undefeated. With that being said most college teams defense with exception of GA, maybe MICH can control the game with their strengths. If teams don’t generate a pass rush, all teams that have a good QB,can win the game. Unless your Michigan, who runs the ball n controls the clock, that keeps your defense fresh. Hopefully LR will scheme plays based on specific coverages.

  28. That Washington-Oregon contest was as riveting as the Sark Texas team was a drag
    SC now does not need for Oregon to beat Utah because the SC-sucla winner will play either the Ducks or Utes in the Pac-12 Championship game

    And with Oregon’s loss the “Final-4” poll looks like this–
    Georgia
    Ohio St
    Michigan
    TCU
    Tennessee
    LSU
    USC

    If SC wins out the team will pass up LSU (loser to Georgia) and I believe Tennessee as well because the Volunteers will not be playing an extra game like all the front-runners so that would leave SC at No. 5 (or sucla at No. 5 should they win out)

    Other than Georgia TCU now looks as if it has the easiest path to a Final-4 bid with only Baylor standing in its way and the Bears were pathetic today.

    And the loser of Ohio St-Michigan still might not slip behind SC so it might come down to style points with the Committee

    When was the last time SC was this close to a possible championship, probably 2008 a whopping 14-years ago, so I am milking these moments for all they’re worth because the bubble may burst with the sucla game

    1. The last thing USC wants is to make the playoff. They want no part of any of the other teams in it. If you ask the coaches they’ll all say making it and getting slaughtered by a top 4 playoff team hurts the program going forward – reenforcing their soft – more than making it helps.

      They talk about the Max Browne Alabama game and the Sam Darnold bowl game in the Dallas Palace where they were de-emasculated by Ohio State.

      The Oregon vs Georgia game didn’t really fortify their spirit either.

  35. Arizona played a hell of a game tonight. UCLA would be just an average team without running back Charbonney. This guy is a 1st round draft choice. UCLA is still in the Pac 12 race don’t count them out yet.
