USC Morning Buzz: Caleb Williams Offers Heisman Dilemma

Caleb Williams was still in New York on Sunday night to officially accept his Heisman Trophy.

After he won the award Saturday night, he told the other finalists, “I may be standing up here today, but y’all get to go to the College Football Playoffs.”

The question is what is more important to USC fans? The College Football Playoff or the Heisman?

For me, going to the College Football Playoff is more important. It says you are part of the elite.

But I’m not so sure about USC fans. There were many who had a defeatist attitude about losing to Georgia and preferred going to the Rose Bowl. They didn’t even consider USC would play Michigan instead, which would have happened if the Trojans defeated Utah.

USC playing Michigan with a chance to go to the national championship at So-Fi Stadium or its eighth Heisman Trophy?

Which would you prefer?

      1. bozo FB gets the shaft….the Cotton Picker/Picking Bowl.

FYI, Ricky Ticky would take a prolonged threesome tickle, tickle with Crabs, SUCC’s olive oil coated Gladiator and Commie “Stinking” Lush.

After a decade or so of straight NC’s and Heisman winners the NCAA would terminate out program….

  1. Your ass Scott Wolf! I was one of many fans on this blog about the Natty being more important than the Heisman trophy. I was on your blog Saturday morning right, after the game criticizing LRs decision to not having the testical fortitude to take Caleb out. MG and many had made comments about Caleb Williams still in the game after LR admitted that Caleb was only at 40%. Wtf was that Miller Moss is not good enough or the Heisman and the accolades for Lincoln Riley’s recruiting more important in the long run.

    1. So was I. Once again, the bozo FB program is thrown under a bus by a Clown U player with his own selfish agenda.

Why did LR allow this shit to happen? I thought he was the Clown U HFBC. I guess Caleb has contract that allows him to ignore the SUCC’s coaching staff when he feels like it. Oh the whimsy of Clown U FB.

    2. I partially agree, Trojanboogs. We had a much better chance with a 100% Moss than a 45% Caleb —we could have completely shifted our offensive strategy toward ‘run first’ …and switched to short passes to Brown, Washington and Austin in space. We LOST our center trying to protect an immobile QB.
I disagree that Lincoln stayed with Caleb to earn a Heisman. He did it cuz they have an almost father/son relationship —and it blinded him to the possibilities of going with another QB. It’s understandable ….and I’m glad Caleb got his well deserved Heisman….. but we coulda won that game.

      1. That was basically my point MG.. It’s Lincoln Riley Riley’s job to put his team in the best possible position to win the game. Regardless of his relationship with Caleb Williams. Your right they could of won that game but LR had other ideas.

  2. LSU put up 30 points and passed for over 500 yards against Georgia, with two QB’s each throwing for over 200. USC vs Georgia, I doubt anyone would have punted.

  3. Furthermore after Caleb Williams hurt his hammy on the long run, in the 1st quarter. Lincoln Riley should of took him out. Miller Moss was capable of coming in relief, at QB. For like, 2 or 3 series . So the trainers can work on CW in the medical booth. Instead of leaving him out there to be a sitting, wounded, duck; without any movement in the pocket. Which is obviously CWs biggest attribute to his game. They’re still would’ve of not been any reason to diminish his chances at winning the Heisman trophy at that point. If he came out of the PAC 12 championship game in the 1st quarter. With a spot in the playoffs and a chance to win a national championship on the line. That’s common sense. The natty was more important and would’ve put USC on the map again as top 5 Blue blood program. What could of been! Fight on!

    1. Talk about passive aggressive Ken Hart. Or is it snarky and full of shyt? With his inside USC moniker for this blog. Inside of whining criticism that no one gives a rats ass about that’s about it from the Wolfman.

  5. Going forward, here’s what I’d like to see:

    1. No more games on field turf, if that can be avoided. That probably contributed to CW’s injury, and in a stadium where the playing surface can be switched from turf to grass (and vice versa) SC should have insisted on the real thing.

    2. Echoing CW’s remarks about “unfinished business” the team has got to pick themselves up and treat the Cotton Bowl as the first game of the 2023 season, not some consolation prize. A blowout win over Tulane will set the tone for the rest of the games that follow.

    3. If the game against Tulane does turn into a blowout, LR has got to sit CW down and give Miller Moss the reps he needs, so that he can step in when needed, also so that he’s not tempted to go into the transfer portal.

    1. Reply to Sgt:
      (1) Let players play on field turf…in bare feet.
      (2) Whoever starts at QB, time for the D to grow some killer instinct
      (3) No! Let Caleb start 2023 Heisman campaign…

  6. I’m sorry Scott but why do have to make a choice? Caleb winning the Heisman has nothing to do with going to the playoff. The only “dilemma” was between playoff and Rose Bowl (if we won the PAC-12 and weren’t ranked in the Top 4). Why bring Caleb into this?

    1. It seems Scott is inferring that Lincoln’s decision to stay with Caleb was based on assuring him the Heisman [he either makes miraculous comeback or proves championship guts].
Remember also —if Caleb actually did pull off the miracle we ARE Top Four and we DO go to playoffs. On the other hand —who was in a better position to run the team in the second half? A talented 100% healthy Moss? Or a wounded Superman?

  8. Heisman. Our D sucked. We’re way ahead of schedule with Riley, but we weren’t going to win a natty. I the future the Heisman will be more impressive than a loss in the playoffs. By the way, who did you vote for?

  9. That’s an award in the Pac 12? Scott ask us a better question like where was Vorhees? Why couldn’t he go? Did the o-line coach get hijacked or drunk in Vegas? How is Murphy the choice at tackle when Quinones was available? No quarterback could succeed in those circumstances with an o-line in obvious disarray. What happened to the line? Lack of preparation?
Of course you want to find some drama, vexing over the past seems to be the nom-de-plurre for this blog.

  10. Don’t think for a minute that Tulane will be a blowout in USC’s favor. They beat Big 12 Champion Kansas State on the road despite losing the Turnover battle 2-0.

  12. Hearing about Mike Leach is sad as he is in ICU …he was the best Pac12 coach while in the Pac 12…he made Wash St football relevant and a team to be dealt with on offense and defense. He got a bum rap from espn while at Texas Tech…kinda’ like Bobby Knight at Indiana or Woody Hayes at OSU or Joe Paterno at Penn St.

  13. A better question was posed by the Sun Newspaper this morning. Is it time to give Reggie back his Heisman and re-retire his number? The article pointed out the flaws in the penalties heaped on USC by the NCAA. Those included forfeited games and awards based on the assumptions of lack of institutional control. Falsified information that the NCAA used to levy punishment on USC has been aired in court. But an interesting part I didn’t know was that the investigation never included an interview with Reggie’s parents. Cam Newton’s father committed a far more flagrant violation of the rules, but the NCAA decided that Cam had no control over his father’s actions, how come they didn’t see it that way for Reggie? One of the “perks deemed inadmissible” was a limo ride to the Heisman award ceremony,(WTF) which is standard practice now.

  14. The proper authorities need to re-install Reggie Bush as the official winner of the Heisman in 2005. SC needs to put his trophy back in Heritage hall and put his jersey under the Peristyle with all of the other jerseys of Heisman winners. Even the host of the Heisman awards said(at the awards ceremony) that this was the 8th Heisman won by USC. He said it twice.
