USC Morning Buzz: What’s The Coaching Buzz?

There was some chatter in coaching circles immediately after the Pac-12 title game that USC defensive coordinator Alex Grinch might be in some jeopardy.

It hasn’t really gained traction, however, and it probably won’t when you consider Grinch has become a Lincoln Riley guy. The USC staff is essentially Riley guys, who tout the company line in public settings.

That’s different from say, Oregon, where a lot of talk emerged this season that Dan Lanning can be a difficult coach to work for. One reason is Lanning didn’t have a network of his own guys and hired coaches from different places/backgrounds so they didn’t know what they signed up for.

When you have your own guys, the good part is you trust them. The risk is if they aren’t really the best-qualified coaches.

  • This is also why I frequently bring up Donte Williams. He is not a Riley guy. When I criticized Williams on twitter after the Pac-12 title loss, a high school coach immediately defended him to me.

“You know, that guy is related to Donte,” a Pac-12 coach told me. I did not know that!

  • Did you like Adidas/Gucci suit that Caleb Williams wore to the Heisman ceremony? It retails for $5,800. The jacket alone cost $3,500.

Williams got fitted for the suit at the Gucci store in Beverly Hills the week before the Heisman ceremony. He then had a public-relations representative and a tailor from Hugo Boss meet him in New York on Friday morning to select his outfits on Friday and Sunday.

  • This video of Williams being greeted at the airport by the USC band would be more heartwarming if it didn’t center more on Coach Bohn in his East German Stasi jacket, and then at the end giving the horns competition with his yelling.

  1. I think Caleb can afford the suit. As far as having coaches who are Lincoln Riley type guys, Pet Carroll was also like that. When he first started out, he had a great coaching staff. But as the coaches started to move on, he really didn’t conduct a search to go out and find the best coaches available. He always promoted from within. PC couldn’t just work with a guy in a business type relationship. If you were on his staff you had to be one of his buddy buddies. That’s probably why he got rid of Norm Chow. Chow was not the rah, rah type who hangs out with you. Once he got rid of Chow, he never won another NC.

      1. Great BUMSTER, Williams, the critical factor why Clown U choka, choka, choked, in their debacle 47 – 24 loss to Utah in the Pac-12 CS Game, gets a flashy, $5k bespoke suit and the 2022 H/T.

And, the bozo team gets the Cotton Picker/Picking Bowl instead of a shot @ the NC in the CFP. You have to wonder what the team thinks of Williams’ individual agenda. I bet it’s cheap smiles and f**k you Caleb thoughts.

#Cotton Picker/Picking Bowl or bust. Maybe Caleb will be so busy lapping up H/T recog, he’ll be forced to miss the Picker/Picking Bowl game.

#SUCC FB, what an almost funny joke.

    2. Hey Utah Utes…
You’re just another worthless team that will never win a National Championship. Just like Oregon, Oregon State, Cal, UCLA, and Stanford, you’re just another one of those teams going through a winning streak and in the role of spoiler for a 7-year span like the teams I mentioned. Enjoy it while it lasts.
You now qualify as a “hater” of USC Football. Only thing that differs than the other schools mentioned herein is that your fans have no class.
      Fight On! ✌️

  2. Everything is a criticism, Wolf have you ever traveled to the east coast in December? Sorry but no flip flops, shorts and a tank. The South Bay and Newport Beach crowd would be wardrobe challenged.

I try to be nice and not call out the Blogger but enough is enough.

We should be rejoicing this holiday season, being with family and friends, enjoying good health and now the resurgence of USC football!!

Happy Holidays everyone, even the real Mr Scrooge, Mr. Scott Wolf.

  3. Nice story about Caleb Williams making the rounds on Instagram. A couple of kids in Utah (Ute fans) had recently lost their father. Caleb made arrangements for them to attend the game in Salt Lake City to cheer for the Utes and then met with them after the game.

  4. Caleb takes the time to arrange for a couple of Utah kids who lost their dad to come to the game, and he meets with them afterwards. But Scottie wants to talk about Caleb’s suit fitting.

    1. In case you’re still shaking your head, my friend, I extend this piece of wisdom [recently read from The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius: “No man —however clever — can change nature… reality remains the same no matter what we say about it.”
Special Note: Coach Leach will be remembered for a long, long time. He told the truth to his team [“today you played like like a bunch of naive babies who believed what the newspapers said about how good you are and how easy this game would be…. and you saw the results.”]…. Coach Leach never said words like “What a great day it is to be a Raider! or a Cougar! or a Bulldog!” —-he never pimped his fans or the press….

  5. About that suit, I originally thought it was a tad bizarre, but the more I see it the better it looks. First because we now have proof that Scott and Teboneohboner are one and the same; has anyone ever seen them to be in the same room? Tebo was on the clown suit kick.
Second because Caleb was awarded the Heisman not as the best dressed, but as the best player and that suit screams player. Caleb could have appeared in dirty jeans and a tee shirt and it wouldn’t have mattered to anyone except for those who forget what the event was about. Scott isn’t a sports writer anymore, he’s a social commentary journalist.

    1. That suit is very stylish…..I’m sure Addidas will sell out on the entire suit lineup. The choice to have Caleb market the suit was pure genius.

They need to have a special line of suits called the #13 edition

  6. The defense has improved, and is even tied for third nationally in turnovers forced (28). It’s also second in interceptions with 19, and tied for 15th in sacks (36). They’re even tied for 10th with three defensive touchdowns. The Achilles heel has been poor tackling.

  7. RIP to Mike Leach. Good coach and great at off-the-cuff interviews. He was a true character that will be missed. Swords up for the pirate!

As far as coaching goes… Grinch better review this season and change his strategy or he’s toast. You can’t drop the linebackers into coverage and still give up big yardage on pass plays. Blitz more and put pressure on the QB! We’ll have the same results unless we bring in some monsters on the D line. Tuli and Taleni were the most consistent this season and one of them is probably going pro soon so we’ve got a major hole to plug.
The secondary just needs a fresh start as Donte Williams isn’t getting through to his group.
Most important is to get someone to teach these guys how to tackle! Anyone who’s still reaching for shoulder pads on a tackle is riding the bench or off the team!
Coach Riley knows the pressure is on the defense so all the focus should be on getting the top defenders in the transfer portal. Caleb and the Offense should keep rolling, but we need the Defense to improve or we’ll end up in another New Years 6 bowl.
