USC Morning Buzz: Transfer Portal Keeps Everyone On Edge

A USC coach told me the transfer portal has everyone a bit edgy right now.

A few weeks ago, Oregon suspected USC was tampering with one of its players about transferring. An Oregon coach even called a USC coach about it. The USC coach denied it.

“It’s the Wild West right now,” the USC coach said. “Everyone is looking over their shoulders.”

  • Linebacker Mason Cobb of Oklahoma State committed to USC on Monday night.

Cobb led Oklahoma State with 96 tackles and 13 tackles for loss this season while also recording two sacks, an interception and a forced fumble.

Here are the defensive transfers for USC so far:

OLB Jamil Muhammad

ILB Mason Cobb

DL Kyon Barrs

CB Christian Roland-Wallace

    1. USC is recruiting everything but top rated interior linemen, it’s been the same old story with Lincoln Riley since his Oklahoma days. There’s a reason why he sweeps through the regular season, and gets his ass kicked in the playoffs. He better get a good understanding of physical football, or he’ll see the same results of when Utah pushed the Trojans all over the field. And that would’ve happened regardless of Caleb Williams getting injured

      1. um… wrong, Lynn.
We know what would happen with a healthy Caleb on the field —cuz we did it that way earlier in the season….we lost by one point cuz of fucked up officiating.

  1. I’ve seen this group operate for a year now. They don’t poach but they get super aggressive when an opportunity arises. I think players are using the portal to get more NIL money and if that leverage gets them more than that’s the American way.

But you still have to prove yourself. Can’t believe Miami and Texas A&M still have the same coaching staff after that disaster seasons. John Henson leaves and look what happens to the offense. Henson doesn’t get enough credit for what he does for SC.

  2. From what I see USC is plugging holes while not threatening losing anyone from the incoming class. If these two linebackers are any good and can show some speed, Lee may be sitting some next season.

      1. They’re gonna give it a try…. they like Shane’s work ethic & probably promised him some kind of new a role in 2023..

    1. Lee will be used in specific situations. I think Riley will hire Lee on the coaching staff if he doesnt make the NFL, which is probable. They need to put Lee in the right place on the field if he is going to succeed.

  5. This isn’t a defensive talent deficit, it’s a coaching issue with grinch. Grinch had talent at ou and still sucked. Not sure if riley thinks grinch is going turn these guys into 1985 Bears. Da Bears.

    1. Riley told Scott “Grinch is gonna turn our defense into the 1985 Bears”?! Some might say that’s being overambitious……

  6. People will keep on whining and complaining about SC “taking their players”. OH WELL! Keep on piling up on those transfers, besides we don’t yet who’s staying or leaving yet. Especially on the defense end……I welcome those players. SC needs to seriously get rid of that Alex Grinch BITCH!

  7. I have to laugh at people wanting Grinch gone. Yet they never offer up anyone to replace him. We all know he isn’t going anywhere…yet. I am sure if he came up with a decent defense there would still be complainers whining about getting someone else.

    1. Grinch took over a defense that totally gave up against Stanford, Oregon State, Utah and UCLA the year before….

I find this entire account highly implausible. Are we to believe there is some USC coach who would convey this kind of thing to Scott? Who in their right mind on the USC coaching staff would tell this to Scott?

  9. The guys in the transfer portal from the linemen perspective are worse than the players available from last year. Look at the deals they are receiving for NIL and compared to last year it’s way down for linemen.

  10. They’re going after Trace Ford from Oklahoma State. They say he is a beast. They said that in the 2021 OSU-Texas game, Texas couldn’t keep him out of the backfield. The problem is that he has had knee problems. In 2022, he only made 8 tackles. But if you can keep him healthy….watch out. I hope he doesn’t turn out to be another Earl Barquet from TCU, who made zero tackles last year. Even our longsnapper made one tackle.
