If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

Was there anything going on Thursday night? Oh, yes. Say it with us: Thanks, Enfield!

  • Quite a showing in Las Vegas in back-to-back weeks by Lindsay Gottlieb and Andy Enfield.
  • USC looks like an 11-seed in the NCAA Tournament after that loss to Arizona State last night.
  • Divya Jakatdar was elected student-body president at USC last week. She might have made history as perhaps the first president identifying as a part of the LGBTQ+ community.
  • And now for some history:

This picture packs a punch for USC fans. It’s a gathering of tailbacks. From left: Anthony Davis, O.J. Simpson, Marcus Allen, Clarence Davis, Ricky Bell and Mike Garrett.

And with the exception of Simpson, they are all from Southern California. Can you name the high schools they attended? Answer below.

  • Someone should present this photo of Anthony Munoz to Lincoln Riley and show him what an offensive lineman looks like.
  • Here’s a classic scene from a classic movie: King Kong (1933).

In the film, Kong is supposed to be at The Hippodrome Theatre in New York City, where he is about to make his escape. But it is actually the Shrine Auditorium. The stage and then the crowd shots were filmed at the Shrine, which opened in 1926, six years before King Kong was shot.

  • Last week, I ran a couple photos of former USC defensive back Lindon Crow. Here’s another as Crow, playing for the Chicago Cardinals, intercepts a pass ahead of the Eagles’ Bobby Watson at Comiskey Park on Oct 23, 1955.

But here is why I’m still talking about Crow: In 1962, he was a safety for the Los Angeles Rams and the Rams’ defensive backs coach. Imagine all the responsibility Crow had as a player-coach.

Here’s some video of a Rams-49ers game in 1962. The video includes former USC/current Rams players Crow (who intercepts John Brodie and goes 65 yards for a pick six); Jon Arnett and Marlin McKeever. If you were a USC fan in those days, it was hard not be a Rams fan.

  • Do you remember USC pitcher Eric Raich? He was the No. 1 pick in the 1972 Major League Baseball Draft. Raich was drafted by the Cleveland Indians after going 7-3 with a 2.21 ERA.

Raich went 7-8 with the Indians in 1975, his only season with any major league wins or losses.

  • Here is the presidential motorcade in 1958 outside the Coliseum as Dwight Eisenhower heads to a rally at USC. Eisenhower arrived via helicopter.
  • I wonder how many people that work in the USC libraries know they have the personal papers of actress Virginia Mayo?

USC asked Mayo for the papers back in the 1970’s. Materials include personal and business correspondence, telegrams, fan letters, theater and motion picture programs, scrapbooks, and clippings, stills, photographs, fan magazines, publicity, pressbooks, awards and trophies. This was back before fundraising was the only concern of some of these schools on campus.

  • Look at all the horror movies you could watch in 1975 in New York City on commercial TV? “Night of the Living Dead.” “The Colossus of New York.” “Sound of Horror.” “Horror Island.” “A Reflection of Fear.” Endless possibilities.

VIDEOS OF THE WEEK

You might be shocked to see who died during this tribute from the SAG Awards.

  • Time for a little “Lowdown” from Boz Scaggs.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Here are the high schools the USC running backs attended. A. Davis (San Fernando); Simpson (Galileo); Allen (Lincoln); C. Davis (Washington Prep); Bell (Fremont) and Garrett (Roosevelt).

CROW WAS A GREAT OPEN FIELD RUNNER AND CARRIED THE BALL ON WINGBACK REVERSES.

      1. George —Don’t you think it’s time for Scott to run a Jon Arnett TD video? Lots to choose from during his days with the Rams.
[btw, wouldn’t ya know that battler Clarence Davis would be the guy with the foot cast in the photo of great USC backs]….

    5. The Ladies of Troy stunk it up last night vs the Sun Devils in an embarrassing loss getting ousted of the tournament.

I don’t know which look was worse, the lack of hustle by the Ladies of Troy or Andy Enfield smiling during the postgame interview, as if losing is something to be proud of.

  2. Now now, Scott Wolf, don’t go-be piling on your pal Enfield when he’s down, I knew the ‘Devils would be a tough out after playing them only a few nights before. Hard to win back to back games against the same team. And the old basketball bugaboo of “My shot is off Coach” makes even great players look as if they are not trying

Right, Scott, as if the Anthony Munoz prototype grows on trees

That shot of the SC Heisman winners and “Shoulda-Won Heismans
exhibits them in their fine life’s prime–dapper and looking good

King Kong where art thou– I am 5-years old packed in a Ford with my parents and brothers at the Drive-In scared by Kong’s presence and yet crying at his death at the end

“Whose afraid of Virginia”– Mayo anyone?– She must be Wolfie’s kind of dish

“I like Ike, I like Ike,” I can hear the chants. But he probably would be turned away from the SC campus today

      1. You reminded me of another joke, Buddha.

How do you keep a Mexican from stealing?
Put everything on the top shelf.

Yup, big farm fed white boys are definitely a minority in CA these days.

        A few others…

Why did the Mexican family have 20 people in their car?
Because they needed to leave room for groceries.

Why does nobody play Uno with Mexicans?
They always steal the green cards.

How do you know when Asians are moving into the neighborhood?
When the Mexicans start buying car insurance.

Why didn’t the Mexican archer fire his bow?
        He didn’t habanero.

    1. A profound question to be sure. I’m old enough to remember when “gay” meant happy. Try teaching middle school chorus and singing “I feel happy” from West Side Story. Bi and trans are prefixes again teaching chorus and singing “What’s this?” from nightmare before Christmas. The line “how queer” needs a dictionary explanation.

      3. Well, the original 1957 stage version didn’t say “gay”. It was:

I feel pretty and witty and bright,
        And I pity
Any girl who isn’t me tonight.

Not sure why they changed it for the 1961 film. But now it’s back, to be sure no one is offended.

We’ve seen “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” more than once and sometimes they remove the song “Why We Like Spelling” because of one line: “It makes us feel normal”. The implication that spelling bee champs aren’t normal makes Libtards cry.

  4. Forget the picture of a yesteryear lineman, the shoulder pads alone make players look bigger back then. Maybe go with King Kong. Tell Riley to start there and then recruit up. Perhaps the Virginia Mayo picture? She obviously has great pectoral muscles.
Always fun to read the Friday column. Makes me wonder what ever happened to those huge shoulder pads? These days they have taken the knee pads out of the pants and taped them to their shoulders. No wonder the linemen look so small, when they stand shoulder to shoulder they are literally standing shoulder to shoulder.

    1. Say what, Riley doesn’t deserve the #7 rating. His playoff record is just flatly abysmal. Hell, he couldn’t even order his injured QB to sit in favor of a healthy QB to maybe rejuvenate the stagnate bozo offense in the 2022, P-12, FB playoff.

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“I THINK I JUST MADE THE TEAM!” I DID. I WAS THE ONLY UPCOMING FREAHMAN TO MAKE THE VARSITY OUT OF 15 LINEBACKERS. THEY TOOK ONLY ONE OF THE 15, WE HAD 3 UPPER CLASSMEN LB’S WHO WERE ALREADY ON THE VARSITY. ADRIAN YOUNG, JIM SNOW, STEVE SWANSON. ADRIAN BECAME A FIRST TEAM ALL AMERICAN IN THE FALL OF 1967. HE INTERCEPTED 4 (FOUR) PASSES IN OUR WIN AT SOUTH BEND IN 1967. HE WAS A FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK BY THE EAGLES ALONG WITH TIM ROSSOVICH.
I WAS THE TEAM CO CAPTAIN IN 1969 ALONG WITH THE GREAT JIMMY GUNN. CLARENCE WAS OUR HORSE. HE WAS A BIG TIME RUNNER AND PLAYED FOR THE RAIDERS. OUR WILD BUNCH DEFENSE WAS NO 1 IN THE NATION AND ALWAY KEPT THE SCORE LOW. OUT OFFENCE “THE CARDIAC KIDS” ALWAYS SEEMED TO PULL IT OUT IN THE 4TH QUARTER.
WE HAD A FANASTIC TEAM 10-0-1 WINNER THE 1970 ROSE BOWL 10-3 OVER MICHIGAN ENDING UP A DISPUTABLE #3 IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS.
