USC Morning Buzz: Sometimes, Who You Don’t Hear About Is As Important As Who You Do

Here we are almost halfway through spring practice and it’s interesting Lincoln Riley says cornerback Ceyair Wright has sort of been a breakout player so far.

Why is it interesting? Because you are not hearing Riley mention Domani Jackson, who is supposed to be healthy and definitely was a five-star coming out of Mater Dei.

You would think Jackson would be getting mentioned in spring since there are less corners practicing than during the regular season. Instead, Wright appears to be seizing the opportunity. And rest assured, if there even a morsel of news on Jackson, the fanboy media would gobble it up.

USC might be better at some spots on defense next season but it doesn’t have a corner to replace Mekhi Blackmon. Even the coaches know this. And apparently, it’s crazy to think at the moment Jackson will be making a meaningful impact unless he makes a dramatic jump in his practice performances.

    1. Actually, Riley was praising Wright, but also mentioned Domani. Scott read an abbreviated article.

I think that actually the message I am hearing from interviews with Riley is that there is alot of competition in the defensive backfield. For CB, there is Covington, who seems to have taken a big step forward, Wright, another big step forward guy, Domani, a 5-star who is now healthy and practicing and the new Arizona guy who transferred here to play ball, not sit on the sidelines. That doesnt even include a guy like Prophet Brown.

You never know until the season begins, but it doesnt seem like they are worried about the backfield at this point in time. The front seven is what I want to hear about coming out of spring practice.

      1. Coming out of High School, Prophet Brown was considered to have a lot of raw talent but still a project as a DB.

    2. Alex Grinch and the other idiot Donte Williams have Domani Jackson ahead of schedule under their direct tutelage…that kid ain’t going nowhere fast.

      LOL!

If Domani Jackson were smart he would get the hell away from Grinch and the other idiot Donte Williams A.S.A.P.

Between those two idiots Grinch and Donte Williams, all the years they’ve been coaching and they have developed no one. That’s their resume, their track record, a big zilch!

If Domani Jackson sticks around with those two aforementioned Bozo’s he’ll be another nothing on each of their resumes.

      1. So far Domani Jackson and Korey Foreman have been a bust. Throw in Solomon Tuliaupupu and you have 3 guys that were great coming out of high school. Injury was part of the problem with Jackson and Solo. Hopefully, this will be their breakout year. At this point I’m not ready to give up on any of those 3 but we’ll see.

  2. Spring Football and early Spring practice Baseball have something in common– “We look good and are going all the way this season,”
until they roll out the first games

Case in point– South Carolina’s Lloyd averaged fewer than 10 carries at less than 5 yards per the past 2-years, so how is it he appears to be another Dye in the making?

    1. Simple math formula for USC to reach CFP.

add 6 points per game from the offense (48 points average, #1 in country)
      – more consistency from receivers – Singer better than Addison, Rice better than himself last year, add Branch, Duce at tight end/large receiver by mid-season
      – better short yardage run game blocking from o-line(extends drives)
      – better blindside pass blocking from o-line (less need for CW to scramble).

subtract 10 points from opponents by defense (average)
      – linebackers that can tackle and cover in space, more speed – simply replace Lee and other starters last year – biggest improvement of all
      – more than one player on d-line provides pressure to QB (more transfers coming)
      – better overall secondary – improvements at safety (Branch) and corner (more competition for starting positions)

many games will be blowouts by 3rd quarter and Riley will get his two-deep playing time (including Moss or Nelson). this will reduce injuries on starters and improve team depth for late in the season.

Nailed it!. I have often said on this blog, we arguably had the worst LB group in the conference. In recent memory, I can’t recall an ILB slower than Lee.

  5. Coach Wiley, look at what you have wrought– Trojans were humble while enduring a 4-8 2021 season, but then when you handed them a 2022 11-3 record suddenly the humility was worn off with
Trojan-Nation now demanding no worse than 11-3 every year.

  6. Russian trolls on a Scott Wolf blog? Yikes!

They should go undefeated. Oregon’s offense has a new o-line coach and offensive coordinator coupled with an anal defensive coach who is very impatient. Utah comes to the Coliseum without TE Dalton and a seriously downgraded defense. Notre Dame? Please. Colorado? Seriously? No team will have a better quarterback than USC or have a better offense than USC’s offense. It’s all up to Grinch to get his side of the ball to keep up and keep points down. Washington isn’t even worth mentioning. Neither is UCLA.
