USC Spring Notes: Bright Spot In Backfield

I hear through six practices that a highlight has been the pass blocking and pass-catching skills of tailback MarShawn Lloyd, the transfer from South Carolina.

  • I’m hearing incoming freshman Juju Watkins, the national player of the year, has basically become the recruiting coordinator for USC women’s basketball, and the Trojans are expected to bring in a lot of players through the transfer portal (again) as soon as the season ends.
  • Utah Valley coach Mark Madsen has been offered the Cal job. Is that a step up?
  • Manchester United and Wrexham, the team owned by actor Ryan Reynolds, have announced they will play a friendly in San Diego on July 25th.
  • Bronny James isn’t talking but future USC point guard Isaiah Collier spoke to the media today.

  1. Mark Madsen, the Lakers Dancing Freak, Stanford grad, and man who paid his dues such as coaching at Utah Valley, has now been offered the Cal basketball job

Only Scott would ask if Cal were a step up from Utah Valley

    1. I am excited to get to see Quinton Joiner. I hope he breaks through the log jam of backs and gets a shot, he is one hell of a back.

  2. Mark Madson. Looks like he’s turning out to be a pretty good coach. He was 28-8 this year so far at Utah Valley. Has reached the final 4 in the NIT tournament so far. Beat Oregon and Colorado.

    1. ….Which, along with Caleb doing his thing, means between 500 -600 yards of offense per game…..

      1. If Grinch and the gang can keep the score at 30 and under, I don’t see a defense in the country keeping USC under 30 points. If Caleb can stay up-right through the season, USC’s ultimate success is in the hands of Grinch. I know many have no faith in Grinch, but the overall talent on Defense has improved across the board.

We need to execute and stay on the plus size of the turnover battle!

      2. Yep!
The ONLY thing I’m worried about, Gabby, is the offense having an off game…like at Oregon State [but, gotta admit, the defense came through for us that night]!

      3. If I recall correctly, the game really came down to a 4th and long and Caleb worked his magic and picked the 1st down which eventually led to the winning score. The let-down/trap game is something I am always fearful of. It caught us a few times during the PC era

      4. Talking about trap games, Cal 75 should be happy…..

      5. I don’t foresee any of the games you listed as a trap or look ahead game. Outside of ucla, I see all those teams being highly ranked when we play them.

Speaking of Oregon…. I recently read somewhere on the internet a “way too early prediction” and the person had us finishing. 11-1 with a road lose to Oregon. The article had a little break down of each game. I’ll take 11-1 with a chance to blowout Utah in the title game.

We can’t depart the PAC12 without revenge on the Utes.

      6. I don’t think of any of those games as traps either, Gabby. What I meant was, after getting up for so many big games, we might be down for Cal…..

      7. You bring back memories of Helton. Playing down to your opponent’s level, looking unmotivated, and unprepared. USC is paying 10 million a year to void that type of incompentence.

      8. I find it hard to believe the offense can get a lot better. I am sure there is a certain amount of hype involved, but the basics will be sound. A good O line, some excellent receivers, very good running backs and a world class offensive coach. Will tight end be involved, how do they include Raleek Brown, will we ever get to see student body right again.

  3. If he stays healthy, Lloyd will be an All-league RB. Mason Cobb was asked who stood out on offense and Lloyd was the name he gave.

      1. The young man is 5’9, 225, and chiseled. When I watched his numerous highlights, I quickly think of Josh Jacobs of the LV Raiders. His pad level is low which leads to a lot of broken arms tackles.

Lucus on defense and Llyod are the two guys I am excited to see play right now.

    1. With the talent they are bringing in, if they don’t have a really good defense this year it’s “Adios Grinch”.

      1. Since Riley’s first season as HC at Oklahoma he has not been able to fielded a defense that can consistenltly keep an opponent under 30 a game. It’s what has kept him from playing in the Narional title game(s)

Let’s hope this year changes his shortcomings

      2. I honestly think Coach Riley’s wet dream is to win the National Championship with the Greatest Offense and the Worst Defense in NCAA History…..

      3. There was one year where Auburn won the NC though their defense was only rated 60th. Other than that, every NC team had a defense that was rated 25th or under and most had a defense that was rated 15th or under.

      4. With Riley and Brown involved with Grinch and they don’t get any better there will be some serious soul searching going on. I find it hard to understand why they didn’t bring in Leonhard, very possibly one of the best in the business, at least as an analyst.

All you need to do to field a great defense is hire a great DC and bring in great defensive players and then just get out of the way and let them do their thing. CH never did that because he didn’t have the clout to bring in a great DC nor the clout the recruit great defensive players. But LR does have that clout.
There’s nothing personal about this. It’s a business deal. If you are paying a guy a million dollars a year to build a great defense and he comes up with a defense that is rated 106th out of 130 teams, you just tell him “sorry but we are moving on”. You don’t keep paying a guy one mil a year when he is not getting results.
