USC Notes: Top Tailback Visiting

Four-star tailback Jason Brown of Seattle will visit USC this weekend.

Besides USC, other schools that offered Brown include Alabama, Miami, Florida State and Oregon.

  • Tickets are free for the USC spring game on April 15 and can be obtained here. Coliseum parking, however, will cost $25.
  • A jury found Los Angeles politician Mark Ridley-Thomas guilty Thursday of federal corruption charges related to special benefits his son received at USC. He faces the possibility of years in prison.

Ridley-Thomas was found guilty of seven felony convictions: bribery and conspiracy, as well as one count of honest services mail fraud and four counts of honest services wire fraud. He was found not guilty on one mail fraud count and 11 wire fraud counts.

  • USC men’s diving coach Hongping Li was named Pac-12 Men’s Diving Coach of the Year for the sixth time.

    1. Speaking of Georgia, MG, did you see where they were in 49th place regarding Portal activity and Alabama was not even listed. I guess they don’t need the Portal and apparently their kids don’t use it often either

    1. So Cal,

I will not eat at El Chocko’s. Horrible food at best. I went one time to the one in Pasadena when they were on Fair Oaks and I ordered a lobster and steak. They bring the steak and then the lobster. When I looked at the lobster, I told the waiter to come over and look at the lobster and tell me what is wrong with it. he does and he says there is nothing wrong with it. Then i asked him was the last time he saw ice on the face of the lobster while a portion was only cooked. The lobster was half cooked and half frozen. Never again will I go. There food was average and the margaritas were good, but now the margartitas are way too expensive and so is the food. You can have it. Over priced and over hyped

      1. Sorry to hear that. I don’t blame you. If you have a really bad experience one of your first few times at any particular restaurant, it can ruin it. Glad to say I haven’t nor has anyone else I know.

      3. Pasadena: I feel the same way about Mijares. The food is awful. I ordered abondigas soup and there was a few stocks of zucchini and some potatoes with no meatballs and zero flavor. Try El Portal. It is better than El Cholo and Mijares although I do like the chile verde from El Cholo. They only serve it at lunch.

      4. Plow Horse,

I know the owners to Mirajes. Some of the kids or grandkids went to my grammar school. U are right, it sucks. Where is El Portal? I go to El Patron in Altadena on Lake St and Altadena Dr. They are pretty good. Reasonable prices. There are other places I. Pasadena that I go to.

      5. Pasadena: El Portal is located at 695 E Green Street in Pasadena. It is in the Playhouse district, across from Vroman’s book store through the arcade. They have a great chicken enchilada and I also like the tortilla soup. Drinks are good too and a nice atmosphere.

  2. Scooter,

$25.00 to park at the Colsiuem. Oh hell no. I can park for free and walk in. BTW, the dodgers are charging $30.00 to park a car and $60.00 for a larger vehicle. They can go shove it where the sun does not shine.

      1. So Cal,

McCourt was smart. Get rid of the most expensive thing and keep the one thing that will make the most money. Very little expense in running a parking lot. I wonder if he even pays the electrical bill for lights?

    1. Plow Horse,

I have been there. Another place that I think is fake for Mexican food. I had a brain fart. It is the same as El Cholos or Mirajes. If u haven’t, try Margaritas on Rosemead for the same quality food. I like low key places. El Patron on Lake is good or Mojitos on Lincoln. However my Gold standard is El Tepeyac’s in East LA. For a gringo and my best friend being Mexican, I have learned how to decider good Mexican food. He taught me

      1. PT: I love El Tepeyac. Been going there since high school. Usually get the stewed pork in red sauce, Oki burrito. Miss Manual. Used to give shots of Brandy out when you were waiting in line on a weekend. I also like the carne asada burrito at Tops at the intersection of Walnut and Allen.

  3. Save the SC parking fee if you are willing to walk a mile from fraternity row near the Beta House, or a half mile on Spring or adjacent streets

  4. Balderdash. There was no crime. If a person paid to get a family member into that school, who cares? Society is not harmed. They will just find a work-around this. So, if I give a donation to USC and SC then gives a family member a scholarship, is it still a crime? Or if a family member is allowed in under affirmative action, no money exchanged, that is fair? Then, later the school accepts a donation when the family member graduates? That is how politics works on the federal and state levels anyway.
If a developer wants to build apartments in LA, he can’t make it work economically unless the city provides some density bonuses, fast tracking, etc. because that is intentionally rigged to compel the developer to play legalized payola. So the developer hires lobbyists to pay payola the city council and oila! the developer can finally make a profit. It’s ok for the public sector, just not the private sector.

    1. Wayne: I have no problem with the grandchild of a big donor getting additional consideration for admission based on the past donation. But that is not what happened in the Ridley-Thomas case. While on the County Board of Supervisors, Ridley-Thomas entered into an agreement with the dean of the USC School of Social Work to grant his son admission to a graduate school program and provide him a scholarship and paid teaching gig. In return, Ridley-Thomas promised to direct lucrative county contracts to the school. The difference in these facts from your hypothetical are significant. Ridley Thomas did not donate his own money to the school but instead used his position to direct county money to the school in exchange for an admission, scholarship and high paying job for his son. This behavior is illegal and the county taxpayers who fund the county budget with the expectation that contracts will be awarded on an ethical basis as opposed to a kickback scheme were harmed by it. Ridley Thomas is a dirty politician and deserved to be prosecuted.

I have eaten the Hollenbeck Special by myself at El Tepeyac’s. The biggest one they have. They’re Chili Colorado, guacamole, tawiitos, and all food there is supreme. Mr. Rojas would come to my table and and say tequila or brandy. U could never refuse him. I took brandy with my horchata. Tops has great food. U have Lucky Boy’s on Arroyo or Foothill. Their breakfast burrito is good. Then u have the taco truck on Fair Oaks. Best is still El Tepeyac’s

  5. Sorry to hear this about Mark. I have known him for years and he received his Ph.D. from usc in the school of Social Ethics. I am also surprised to learn of how he got to this place at this time. Really surprised because as a student he was very ethical and upright. Sad day. Do any of you know Mark?
