USC Morning Buzz: Wait Six Games Before Judging Offensive Line

OK, the USC offensive line is settled.

I wrote my starting defensive line yesterday but this is an easier task because the transfers have taken over. Here is how the offensive line will this season:

LT Michael Tarquin (6-5, 310)

LG Emmanuel Pregnon (6-6, 318)

C Justin Dedich (6-2, 305)

RG Jarrett Kingston (6-4, 300)

RT Jonah Monheim (6-5, 295)

A lot of people who have never seen the transfers play say they will make the offensive line a lot better.

That isn’t saying much. Except these are same people who said last year’s offensive line was much improved.

You know who makes the line better? Caleb Williams.

Pro Football Focus highlighted that Monheim did not allow a sack or quarterback hit in 608 pass-block snaps last season. Do you think Williams (and an offense that doesn’t like to throw deep) had something to do with that? Forget stats.

The line has three transfers. The expectations are higher. It will have an easy first six games to become a cohesive unit. But those final six games will present some issues. And that’s where the line will be judged (media fanboys will judge based on Nevada opener).

  1. You’re constantly bashing USC on anything and everything. But, you constantly make stupid mistakes of your own. You’re a so called USC insider, but you don’t even know who USC plays in the opener!!! SMH!

      1. Mention there are no Scott Wolf imitators on his blog,
and voila, one appears the very next day

    1. Well, as far as mistakes go, and if we were rating them on a 1-to-10 scale
I would say Scott’s latest gaffe is about a ‘1’ or ‘2,’ and besides,
Wolf purposely does this to embed us with a false sense of superiority

  2. Lincoln Riley may have put together the best offensive line in the history of college football. We already know he’s the best coach in the history of college football. If he’s smart, he’d consult with me, because I’m the biggest fanboy, and know everything there is to know about USC football 🏈

    1. Perimeter? We don’t need no stinkin’ perimeters.
Lack of a pass rush last year IMHO was the biggest problem. By mid-season, everybody doubled Tuli, and the opposing QB had all the time in the world. Front 7 this year should be much better. Getting Romello Height back should be big, he only played about 3 quarters last year, but he was in the opposing backfield a bunch.

  5. Lots of o-line rankings for the 2022 season out there, USC averages around 10th. Room to improve, but OTOH, last year’s line wasn’t dogshit. Build a decent defense and USC will be in the CFP. Grinch knows he has to deliver this year or he will be gone.

    1. 67,
Scott is just being loveably perverse again —he knows that our starting o-line was first rate last year…. he even pointed out that we were screwed in the late 4th quarter of the Tulane game due to our starters being out [when Mario Williams wisely found a way to get us started on the ONE yard line]….

  6. Here’s the obvious fly in Scott’s ointment. The offensive linemen have six game like situations to gel before the dreaded back half of the season.
I’ll bet you were thinking I’d say there are no easy games, but that’s more obvious (er). Either way if Riley is half way he coach Scott thinks he isn’t, adjustments will be made before the tougher games show up. What make a team work is teamwork and Riley works that angle well. I semi honestly believe Riley will have his linemen eating the grass in front of them with a side of Traveler’s leavings without sriracha, before too long. (Except those stadiums with plastic fields they’re too hard on the kidneys)

    1. I think LR will rotate his OL quite a bit during the first 6 games, mainly to try to keep them healthy for the last 6. Besides, it will build the chemistry they will need after eating all that horse manure that they didn’t save for the fanboys.

  9. Joe Biden ain’t losing to criminal Donald Trump. No one else is showing up to save Republicans from their stupidity. Democrats don’t have a clue either. Whining about politics makes as much sense as men wearing tampons.

A fire the offensive line, Quinones knows the offense better than the new guy. Quinones will start. Murphy will back up the tackles along with Elijah. Emmanuel will be brought along slowly and play. Eventually, against Oregon is when I expect to see him start. Why? Look how many NFL talent players he’s played against and his lack of familiarity with Riley’s offense. It ain’t defense, Wolf.

    1. According to the radical left, having a baby doesn’t make a person a woman. So merely wearing a tampon certainly wouldn’t either.

“Whining” = Don’t remind us that our best candidate doesn’t remember who he is sometimes.

      2. I just read that response Michael. Don’t try to protect Trump. It’s not with it. Seriously. Georgia alone is many federal and state felonies. Jack Smith is a real prosecutor. He lost his foundation to Leticia James. Anybody but that doofus who asked a state employee to commit fraud on tape with acknowledgment that he was being recorded. He’s a child in an old man’s body.

      3. Very true.

I will agree with him, however, about it being pointless to discuss politics. But no more so than posting about what Folt, Bohn or Riley should or shouldn’t do. It’s not as if they wake up in the morning and think to themselves, “I’d better read the comments on Wolf’s blog before I head out for the day, so I’ll know what I need to do.”

About your post above, I know Nikki doesn’t stand a chance and would love RFK as an alternative. But as GameTV pointed out, it’ll never happen. They’ll do whatever they need to, to ensure it doesn’t.

  10. Well that’s interesting wolfie…the facts are worth considering too…last yrs ‘O’ line was a very good one and this one will be even better, why? the fact is these returning athletes have another year under these coaches incl conditioning; the transfers come from very good programs and were at least as good if not even better than those they are replacing…that goes for the ‘D’ line too,and line backers and ‘DB’s’
It is true the schedule gets tougher ,but SC will be tougher too…it seems the thought of all this competition will raise the level of SC spirit of ‘fight on’ to its zenith…so there.

  11. you have the order wrong. Pregnon will be the right tackle, that is where he has experience. Kingston has played on the left side before – left tackle, so it will be easier to move him over there.

Pregnon is a better option than even Ethan White because he has at least one more year to play after this year, maybe even two more years.

I think they would love to get that center from Texas A&M as a backup to Deidich this year and then as the future center of the line. If there are other injuries on the line Deidich could also move over to guard and Kingston could move to left tackle. This o-line has lots of options and even more if they can convince that center to think longer term and now worry about playing time this year.

      1. I must have missed something…what exactly does ‘awaiting moderation’ mean?
I don’t always read and/or make comments on wolfies ‘inside’ articles’cause either they don’t really interest me or the comments are nothing to do with his statements and I don’t want to get involved…are you saying they are censoring or are they just stating they do not want foul language, which is fine with me. I prefer people to use civil and decent language at all times.
