Morning Buzz: Two USC Students Charged For Allegedly Stealing Jerseys At NFL Draft

This is a crazy story.

Two USC students who went to the 2023 NFL Draft on assignment for Annenberg Media last week have been charged for allegedly stealing jerseys for top draft picks, according to the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Eric Lambkins, 40, of Marietta, Georgia, and Jude Ocanas, 19, of Los Angeles, face second-degree burglary, stealing and first-degree trespassing charges, according to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office. Lambkins is a graduate student while Ocanas is an undergraduate student. They are both journalism majors at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

The students went to the draft on assignment for USC’s Annenberg Media, which I’m told paid for the trip to Kansas City. According to court documents, the NFL became aware Friday that three jerseys had been stolen from the “Nike Room,” which kept jerseys for the first-round draft picks.

When Kansas City police reviewed security footage, the students were seen entering the Talent Waiting Room, which is adjacent to the Nike Room, early Friday morning. The students had media credentials for the draft but were not cleared to be in the Talent Waiting Room.

They reportedly stole three jerseys for the Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers and the Minnesota Vikings. Each had a No. 1 on the back as they were available for first-round picks. Each jersey is valued at around $350.

The two allegedly walked through an emergency exit and entered the stage area, where security footage captured them carrying a bag. The two were then seen leaving the talent waiting room, with the bag looking “fuller,” according to court documents.

Police arrested the duo at Kansas City International Airport as they were flying back home last Friday. Police searched their luggage and found the jerseys inside, according to prosecutors.

      2. It takes a whole different level of stupid to steal in a place such as China, North Korea or Russia. It was especially stupid when you consider the sunglasses incident occurred only a few months after Otto Warmbier was released by North Korea in a VEGETATIVE STATE for supposedly stealing a propaganda poster! As we all know, he died only a few days after he returned home.

        But we all know petty crimes such as these get a slap on the wrist in most states (unfortunately). But those places? They don’t mess around, especially with foreigners. Here?   5. 67: He decided to learn a new trade at 40 so he quit his existing job, paid 50,000 in tuition via a loan and is now taking classes on effective interviewing and writing techniques. WTF indeed. A wasted enrollment at a school that rejects 8 out of 10 applicants. If this loser was the “best and brightest” applicant who was rejected?

    1. Plow Horse, it may be as much about what has become of the field of journalism. It pays poorly, there are few positions available for people over 35, and there is no job security. So journalism depts that are filled up with tenured faculty are now admitting nearly anybody who is willing to write a tuition check.

  8. Make up your mind, will you? Yesterday’s picture of the day was of USC students parading around with a locomotive bell they stole from Ucla, while you decried the lack of such enthusiasm in today’s students.
    Today you are upset because a couple of students picked up some souvenirs at the NFL draft. I wanna know what has changed? And while I’m asking how do tee shirts become worth $350 each? There’s a last chance store in Escondido where I can buy all three for under $15.
