USC Morning Buzz: Who Should You Keep An Eye On?

OK, I’m already sick of Bronny James and he isn’t even at USC yet.

Back to football (for at least one post since James is probably going to come up later today).

Here are my players to watch for USC this season: QB Caleb Williams, RB MarShawn Lloyd, WR Dorian Singer, WR Mario Williams, OL Jarrett Kingston, DE Anthony Lucas, DT Bear Alexander, LB Eric Gentry, LB Mason Cobb, CB Christian Rolland-Wallace, S Calen Bullock.

Now I’ve listed them for different reasons: Williams is obvious; Lloyd can be a real factor as a receiver; Singer should be the best WR; Williams (the wide receiver) is going to get a lot of chances, for better or worse; Kingston is going to be a guy no one focuses on but plays good every week.

Lucas needs to live up to the hype; Alexander needs to live up to the hype and not just the two sacks he had vs. beleaguered TCU; Gentry needs to be Gentry but stay healthy; Cobb needs to bring some steel to the defense; Rolland-Wallace is not great but he is the go-to corner so that’s where the defense is at and Bullock needs to avoid those bad tackling plays from last season even though Pro Football Focus says he is an All-American.

There are younger guys, like Sam Greene, who might surpass someone above but it’s silly to put too much pressure on him. I’ll wait at least a game. Kidding.

  • USC women’s basketball is loading its roster with three one-and-done grad transfers from the Ivy League: Kayla Padilla (Penn), McKenzie Forbes (Harvard) and Kaitlyn Davis (Columbia).

The key will be how some of them adapt from the Ivy League to the Pac-12. And this will be unspoken, especially by the fanboys, but how much will they defer to Juju Watkins? It’s probably a good strategy to surround Watkins with grad transfers who will assert themselves and be smart teammates.

  1. Don’t forget Solo. If he stays healthy he’s going to make his mark this year. His senior year in high school he was the best defensive player in the country

    1. Keep an eye on ‘Ol Mule Shoe and his boyfriend Alex Grinch, the way they look at each other you can tell they’re gay.

      1. So what if they are? You love to rip on the Right for not being tolerant and the truth is, we have no problem with gays. We just don’t want it shoved down our throats and certainly not being part of the curriculum for pre-pubescent children.

Frankly, I’m laughing at the people crying about the Bud Light can. Who cares? It’s a beer can.

But indoctrinating very young children? No! Allowing men to compete as women, making the years spent training & sacrificing by real women a complete waste of their time and making it virtually impossible for them to win? NO!! Using drag queens to recruit service men & women? HELL NO!!

But what two people do in their private lives is up to them. Why it is such a big deal to you? Live & let live.

      2. May I be the first to go on record as agreeing with the part about “not shoving it down our throats”?

      3. It just seems to me that they want total control. When they refuse to let you call them by their biological personal pronouns and bully the governments(like New York) into passing laws where you could be fined $250,000 for using the wrong personal pronouns even if they want you to call them ZE or Zir or Hir or Zong, they are now asking you to trying to force you to learn a new language. They really want to totally control you.

      4. And thus what I said about what they do in their private lives.

Just because they want to play make believe, doesn’t mean we should be punished for not going along with it. Kids being expelled from school?! Give me a break!

        And 72 genders?!! WTH?

  2. I think the persons to watch this season are Lincoln Riley and Alex Grinch. If Lincoln is standing with his right foot forward and a hand on his chin, it means a trick play has been called. Hand over mouth and headset means WTF was that? Hands on hips looking right (towards Grinch) means I thought you fixed that issue! Hands in the air waving frantically backwards means come here you idiots.
If Alex looks sheepishly towards Lincoln, it means ooops. If he’s standing left foot forward, hands on knees, looking like a woman who’s sudden onset of morning sickness has hit her, it means we’re screwed. If he’s got his hands pressed together in a prayerful gesture, it means he’s hoping the offense bails him out again.
And finally if Lincoln, with folded arms is facing Alex, and Alex is walking away with arms in the air, shaking his head it means Alex is wondering if any NFL teams are looking for help this season.

Special note to the im-poster (with three names for one avatar) I stand by what I said the other day. Using Fucc-tard as an insult doesn’t work. The suffix “tard” means slower or late as in tardy. Most women I have known prefer to Fucc-slow. So find yourself a better insult such as Bru-tard.

    1. Lincoln Riley and Alex Grinch are gay, they’re lover’s.

The person to watch this year is Lincoln Riley’s wife, when she flips Lincoln Riley the bird that will mean the jig is up and she has found out that what has really been going on with Lincoln and Alex when they say they’re going to go watch tape in the film room.

‘Ol Mule Shoe will glady cut his wife loose if it comes down to him having to choose who to give up, her or his life partner Alex Grinch.

    2. All very interesting, Ghost —- but here’s what I’m waiting for: a Jim Mora/Jeff Ulbrich-type screaming match during a nationally televised game —including Grinch handing his clipboard to Lincoln ….and Lincoln trying to calm him down with a little shoulder rubbing & face holding……

  3. Scooter,

SC baseball will be played tonight. they have a total of 8 games left. If they take two out of three with ASU and UA and then beat bakersfield and lmu, that will give them over 30 wins for the season. Tonight’s game will be live stream. I am watching that along with Ohtani pitiching for the Angels tonight for his 5th win of the season with no losses.

  4. My players to watch list. This list is skewed to the players that are going to show upside surprise, so there are alot of young players here.

    Caleb Williams – obvious.
Mario Williams – will become the receiver he should be. I see him as receiver #1
Zach Branch – Going to be WR 2 or 3 or 4, he can be uniquely used in this offense
Duce Robinson – By mid-season he will be doing incredible stuff and he can be used uniquely in this offense
Raleek Brown – OK, Marshawn will be the top back, but RB will be more of an upside surprise in the slot
Offensive line – my standout are the middle three guys – Dedich, Kingston and Pregnon. Monheim will be really solid at right tackle, but he is more expected.

Jacobe Covington – I think he starts at one corner position
Domani Jackson – Battle between him and Roland Wallace to start across from Covington
Bear – I think the big guy will get real good by later in the season. Just a hunch, nothing that really proves this.
Kyon Barrs – Will start to dominate the middle.
Tackett Curtis – will develop by mid-year
Jamil Muhammed or Braylan Shelby – if Jamil doesnt jump off, then Shelby will fill that spot
Zion Branch – Will start to get on the field, which is a surprise

    Garbage Time Performers:
I think USC will have alot of “garbage time” in the first half of the season and some young players will get on the field.

Miller Moss – Lots of garbage playing time this year.
Jakobi Lane – Will only play in garbage time, but will show upside for future. I am looking to see receiver sets where he and Duce are on the field at the same time.
Christian Pierce – Will mostly play late in blowout games, but will show that he is the future when he is on the field. Small chance he starts by end of season.
Elijah Paige – There is a small chance that Eljah Page even takes over the left tackle spot, particularly if there are injuries. I see Paige getting a good amount of garbage playing time early in the season and it will be obvious he is the future.
Sam Greene – Because expectations are low, he is going to exceed them

    Players not on my list:
Dorian Singer – will be a really good player, but in this crowded WR room, will not exceed expectations
Eric Gentry – I have a huge question mark here. We havent seen him in so long it is tough to say, but he will have competition for playing time this year
Mason Cobb – I think he will be the best linebacker, but the expectations for him are pretty high I dont see him exceeding them.
Taj Washington – unfortunately, i think he will perform well, but just not be able to break out in this receiver room. sorry Taj.
Shane Lee – will only be used in specific situations and wont start late in season
Max Williams – unfortunately, i dont see him getting alot of playing time later in the season

We are also going to see someone at H-back position surprising us this season. Riley might not show this off until later in the season.

  5. Joe Kapp of the Cal Rose Bowl football team has just passed. His backup, Ken Meade, was the dean of JFK Law School just prior to me …and Ken told me some wonderful stories about Joe. Great QB and a real good guy.
    P.S.
Ken’s longest pass at Cal was a 5 yard throw that his receiver took 84 yards for a TD.

    1. Michael,

He is still undefeated in one area and that is, he was the starting qb in the movie, “the Longest Yard”. The original one. A friend of mine met Mr. Kapp and he said he was a great guy. The last Cal qb to go to the Rose Bowl. May he RIP.

There is an easy way to end all of this. Everytime a man enters into a womens event just have all the other women boycott the event so that if it is a swimming event you have the man swimming by himself and if it is a running event have the one man running by himself and the same with all of the other events.

    1. Yes, a lot of people have suggested that.

But then you get into the tremendous expense the women spent getting there and entering. With NCAA competitions, they could put their scholarship at risk.

It’s just so messed up. I’m glad the Olympics have told the French runner, “No!”
