USC Morning Buzz: Another Option After Dylan Raiola

When I discussed Lincoln Riley’s options at quarterback in 2024 yesterday, I didn’t mention QB Elijah Brown at Mater Dei High School.

I think Brown’s been the best QB in Southern California the past three years and I hear USC is his leader. Dylan Raiola committing to Georgia only increases the chances of Brown picking USC.

But I’ve been talking about who plays LSU in the season opener in Las Vegas. In a best-case scenario, Brown goes to spring practice next year and then training camp. Is that enough to start the first game?

Remember, Caleb Williams did not take over at Oklahoma his freshman season until the sixth game of the season. So whether or not Brown is ready, Riley might not feel comfortable going with him until after a few games.

Maybe Miller Moss can fill the role until Brown is ready. That’s why I mention the transfer portal. There might be a senior available who can transfer in and be ready to immediately and give Brown time to get used to college football.

At the end of the day, my main point is I don’t think USC’s future is to go through 2024 with the backup quarterbacks on the current roster.

  1. So what? It happened when SC thought Bryce Young was coming and eventually they got Caleb Williams. Scott’s story is just more grist for the mill.

    2. You said “Maybe Miller Moss can fill the role until Brown is ready”. I really don’t think we should look at it that way. Miller Moss is a really good QB. He’s every bit good enough to take SC to a NC if they have the players. SC needs to get the players. Miller Moss is every bit as good as the QB who led Georgia to the last 2 NC’s in a row. He was a walk-on whereas Moss was a 4 star. SC needs to get the players(and I believe that they will). The SEC has had the most people drafted by the NFL draft for the last 17 years in a row. In those 17 years, the SEC has won 13 NC’s. If SC gets the players, Moss could very easily take them to the promise land.

      1. Unfortunately, Miller can’t take the USC anywhere. He can pass….but…he can’t run. And with our o-line the QB has to present a threat as a runner.

    3. The time between Bryce Young spurning jackoff Helton and USC to go to Alabama and USC getting Caleb Williams to transfer in was two seasons. “Eventually” meant suffering through two seasons of Kedon Slovis and the Jaxson Dart, until we got a gamer and a real coach in place.

      1. USC didn’t want to shell out a substantial amount of cash for Dylan Raiola, Georgia got him for $2 million…seems like a fair price.

USC is going to regret not making the kid a decent offer.

    4. I think Malachi Nelson is levels above Miller Moss and Elijah Brown. Nelson is bigger and more athletic and mobile than Moss and Brown. And he’s going to be USC next starting quarterback after Williams leaves for the nfl. That’s the honest truth. Nelson is usc’s next Heisman and he will lead usc to multiple national championships. Go Trojans and Fight On To Victory ✌️✌️✌️

    1. AND M.MOSS showed some new wheels in spring practice, and he will keep getting better…I also thought the JC transfer looked good and will get better…

      1. The JC transfer will probably never play at SC but if you look at his stats and films, he could probably start at a lot of schools.

      2. They had some really good QB’s in 2003……1) Matt Lienart 2) Matt Cassel 3) John David Booty 4) Brandon Hance. Hance transferred in from Purdue where he threw for over 1500 yards in 2001 in 9 games.

  3. Scott,
Stop it. Nelson will be the starter in 2024. He is a 5 star recruit for a reason. He had offers from every football power in the country Riley will have a full year and a full off season to develop him. He will be next in line.

    2. obviously, Riley is an average coach for QB’s in the nation in the eyes of USC Ass Lick, Fanboys . If Dylan came to SC and he didn’t dominate the competition and start early in his career, then his career may be ruined. At Georgia he can run plays and hand the ball off to a dominant running back and will win a bunch of games, and probably win a Heisman. At SC, he would pass pass pass, and play in the most obnoxious finesse offense in college football. That’s a tall mountain to climb and if Dylan had any doubts, which obviously he did, he wouldn’t be able to play his best. I wish him well and hope he has a great career ahead of him, but I know he made a choice between being the guy and riding a gravy train

      1. I was thinking about this the other day, John. Scott is trying like hell to rock & roll without music. He’s not in charge of the band [or the college schedule]. Everybody gets to shoot from the hip until August. Have fun in the meantime…..

At SC, he would have to run the most elite offense in college football and if he (or any QB) could master that, he would be a perpetual Heisman candidate. That’s a tall mountain to climb and if Dylan had any doubts, which obviously he did, he wouldn’t be able to play his best. 5. Scooter,

SC has won national championships with Haden playing. He was good, but not as good as Williams or Lienhart or Palmer. However what wins championships are a very strong running game and a defense that is outstanding. Miller is more than capable of playing against lswhoo. Just get a defense and a strong running game.

  6. I think that Elijah Brown is potentially a more polished QB than Raiola. Brown makes great decisions, although he may not have the upside in terms of his arm strength.

Two top QBs to battle it out for next year and who knows if Moss sticks around as well. USC will be fine. More important to surround the QB with a good o-line and put a decent defense on the field.

  7. My first thought was that Scott missed the spring game, where Caleb played three plays and then stood around for the rest of the show. But someone might point out the offense was playing against our defense.
Anyway with wide receivers popping up around the quarterback, I’m sure the “backup” quarterbacks will be fine. No quarterback looks good without receivers. So as long as Riley doesn’t recruit soccer players (kids who can’t catch) we’ll be fine.

Scott is making a lot of fuss about this kid going to Georgia. Doesn’t that make him a fanboy?

      1. No, not at all, Mr. Ghost of me. Scott doesn’t keep Lincoln Riley’s balls in his mouth, or smell his Farts like the Trojan fanboys do, his opinions about USC are objective

  8. Well, Caleb Williams, as great as he is, never won a big game for SC yet. Never beat Utah (twice) and lost to who? Tulane who won with a strong running game and tackling? The Tulane game could have been won by field goals or not dropping a pass in the end zone. On paper the defense could be much better than the Helton era leftovers. Moss or Nelson could take them to NC game. Moss is athletic and can scramble and run. Can he run 4.5 like Caleb? No. It depends on the supporting cast. A great violinist surrounded by musicians who play off key does not make a great symphony orchestra.

      1. I have them losing 3 to 4 games. They aren’t going to beat the Oregon Potheads in Oregon. ND, Ute, UseeLA all iffy. Buffalos will play way over their heads. Hey, they could have run the table with some FG’s and tackling last year.

      1. I agree with you. I was at the PAC12 championship game and watching the defense get shredded in the second half was very disappointing. The Tulane was just as pathetic!

  9. This post by Scott is inane. I’ll surmise the speculation about Elijah Brown was done out of massive boredom. The idea that a transfer is going to beat out Nelson (or Moss) is plainly stupid. Moss is Outta Here after the season-probably to Washington or Arizona. Georgia lost their OC Monken and Bobo will disappoint just like he did when he coached under Bryan Harsin. By the way, Georgia has one of the worst rushing attacks in the SEC but you’d know that if you went to the games and not just watch on TV.

  10. SC football “Lollipops and Roses” time– it must be Spring
The Trojans have a rough road ahead just to win the Pac-12
and will probably have a loss or 2, which means at best Troy
would be a 4-seed in the playoffs and have to beat (probably)
Georgia, and then maybe Alabama/Ohio St or Michigan.

  11. right now SC has 4 very good q/b’s with lots of potential to get even better and of course 1 is already an outstanding q/b, that can return if he wants too…I am also sure there will be an EXCELLENT q/b or 2 in the portal in addition to 4-5 star high school q/b’s wanting to play for SC.
