USC Notes: A Different View Of Pac-12 Race

I said yesterday I agreed with the oddsmakers that USC was the Pac-12 favorite this fall. But Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News disagrees. Here is his Pac-12 projection:

  • 1. Washington
  • 2. Utah
  • 3. USC
  • 4. Oregon
  • 5. Oregon State
  • 6. UCLA
  • 7. WSU
  • 8. Colorado
  • 9. Arizona
  • 10. ASU
  • 11. Cal
  • 12. Stanford

Washington is generating a lot of buzz from last season. I mentioned the Huskies as possible champions . . . if Michael Penix stays healthy. USC third would be a disaster. Time will tell if this is prescient or just a contrarian view.

  • Big Ten alert: Peacock is going to show 8 Big Ten games this season. Will there be a USC game on Peacock in 2024? I don’t like watching games on a streaming service. The only decent part about it is Peacock charges $4.99 per month.
  • Bryant Wesco, a four-star wide receiver from Midlothian, Texas, is scheduled to visit USC this weekend.

  1. I used to subscribe to the Mercury News and always loved Wilner’s “objective” views. He has always been well informed, but always leaned a little towards the north schools especially, CAL and the Tree. However, last year, he got off the rails too far and I don’t pay attention to his biased views. Yet, I am not 100% confident that SC can win the conference title. I think we have to see whether SC has REALLY fixed its defense enough to be a serious competitor. I also need to see if Grinch can call better defense with better players or whether he remains a checker player and not a chess player

    1. Carra: The two teams that will most likely challenge us are Washington and Oregon. Both teams have poor defenses. So even if our defense continues to suffer, we may still be able to win a shoot out against our PAC 12 opponents including Washington and Oregon. In fact, I can’t think of a single team with a defense that should consistently stop the Trojans with Caleb Williams. We should score 40 or more in every game.

      1. Carra Rand,
‘Wilner was ALWAYS objective but ALWAYS favored….Cal & Tree.

Yet he has Cal & Tree DFL.

THAT HAS TO BE SC LOGIC hard at work.

  2. Wilner is a stooge of the Pac-12 and hates USC for taking UCLA with it to the Big 10. he would never put USC on top.

Washington and Utah have to play Oregon State, which might be a tougher schedule than USC.

I personally think Utah’s reign in the Pac-12 is over. Other teams are getting more physical, which was really the core of why Utah could win.

Washington is the most likely to match USC score for score and find a way to win. I put USC as having one loss or undefeated.

    1. Hey Gametv
I’ve got news for you. SC and Westwierd pac 12 decision to exit is from last summer.

Wilner’s ‘hate’ is very short term. SC logic at work.

  3. I am no expert regarding Pac-12 rosters, but it seems Utah declined, Washington remained status quo, and SC surged especially on the defensive side,
but then again “that is why they play the games”

    1. Unbelievable that the Dodgers would give a community hero reward to these freaks. Here’s a snippet from the article.

“These homosexual bigots are known for simulating sodomy while dressed as nuns,” Donohue observes. “They like to feature a ‘Condom Savior Mass,’ one that describes how the ‘Latex Host is the flesh for the life of the world.’”

“The ‘Sisters’ go by names such as ‘Sister Homo Fellatio’ and ‘Sister Joyous Reserectum,’” he adds, and only last month, the group held an event mocking the Virgin Mary and Jesus on Easter Sunday.

      1. MG: Can you imagine what would happen if these drag queens mocked Allah, Muhammad, the Koran, or Muslim worship. They would be beheaded before sundown and if they somehow escaped would be arrested and prosecuted for a hate crime.

  4. I would pick SC but I wouldn’t put anything past Kalen DeBoer. His head coaching record is 90-11 at the only 3 schools where he has been a HC. If you throw 2020(the covid year) where he was 3-3, his record is 87-8

    2. USC can beat anyone, and they’ll probably go undefeated, because Lincoln Riley is the best coach in the history of college football 🏈

      2. I hope you are right but I just have a hard time believing that we won’t lose at least one of those last 6 games in 2023. LR is a great coach but is he a miracle worker?

  5. Of course Wilner’s going to fire a parting shot, he’s still butt hurt over our exodus. In his eyes our sole purpose of existence was to keep his PAC 12 North teams relevant.

  6. Mark Walters needs to correct that mistake.

Oregon has the most talent in the conference but the worst coaching. Washington is weakest in the secondary and still lacks depth. Utah needs more NFL top end talent to win the conference this year. Only Oregon St is capable of beating the Trojans based on talent and coaching. If USC plays down to their opponent then that is an indictment on the play calling being too unimaginative. No excuses leaves only results.

    1. Mitch McConnel just announced that the theft of public wealth has grown so serious it necessitates 13 times more hearings …and the creation of 47 new Blue Ribbons Committees. Chuck Schumer immediately issued a statement saying such actions were probably a complete waste of time and constitute nothing more than empty symbolism …”but in case they’re not, we oppose them.”

  7. Awake to the ‘wokeness’ of the Dodger dawgs. They put ‘BLM’ on the back of their pitching mound something the LAA and NYY did not do and now this.

They’ve always been joined hand in glove with Hollywood and all it represents this just a confirmation of what their ‘progressive’ ownership world view is. That trial balloon by McCourt to construct a gondola from Union Station is the first step for the ‘Guggenheim cabal’ to prepare construction of other goodies –

Screw the draft Dodgers – waiting to hear if anyone objects to this evil move because that is what this decision the mgmt made is – it is evil.

Thanks to this ‘mainline move’ await the metastasizing move by these damned souls to attack the churches next – esp. the Roman Catholic even with that fool Francis I as the Bishop of Rome.

    2. These aren’t your O’Malley Dodgers. The O’Malleys and Seidlers were devout Catholics and so was beloved Vin Scully who has a recording of himself leading the Holy Rosary. Now they give awards to drag queens who mock God and his church. Screw the Guggenheim ownership. This is pure evil, real Satanic stuff and needs to be plastered all over local television and social media. Where is Archbishop Gomez, the Cathedral is only 2 miles from the stadium. Great opportunity for a procession/protest from the Cathedral to the stadium. And a good number of players and most of the audience are Catholic. They are not going to like this.

As being a practicing Catholic, and I am not perfect, this is another mark against God and the family. Horrible. Gomez needs to come out and condemn this action that the dodgers are taking. O’Malley went to Mass at Perpetual Help on Huntington Dr. in San Marino near Rosemead Blvd. Scully went to Fordham U.

i agree with you. This June is the moth of Our Sacred Heart of Jesus and evil knows this. This is one reason why the the lbtgq celebrate it at this month and attack the family unit as well.

  10. Scooter,

From what I saw, the Washington qb is just above average. If SC has any type of defense, then they can destroy him just like they did against the dud that played for ugly last year.

  11. SoCal, I agree the Dodgers went to the dark side, but maybe this is even darker?
Spoiler Alert, paragraph 3 is a doozy.

More than 150 Catholic priests associated with the Archdiocese of Baltimore sexually abused hundreds of children, and church officials spent decades covering up the alleged behavior, according to a new report published Wednesday.

A yearslong investigation released by Maryland Attorney General’s Office found church leaders were more focused on burying the abuse, not on protecting the victims or stopping the alleged abuse.

The alleged abuse spanned 80 years and happened in different areas across Maryland. One deacon in the report even admitted to having molested over 100 children.

“The staggering pervasiveness of the abuse itself underscores the culpability of the Church hierarchy,” the report said. “The sheer number of abusers and victims, the depravity of the abusers’ conduct, and the frequency with which known abusers were given the opportunity to continue preying upon children are astonishing.”
