Morning Buzz: Washington Becoming Official Threat To USC

What’s the saying, two is a coincidence, three is a trend?

College football reporter Brett McMurphy of Action Network picks Washington to make the College Football Playoff and face Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. He also picks Michigan to face Florida State in the Rose Bowl, the other CFP semifinal game.

So that’s two picks for the Huskies to win the Pac-12. If we get one more pundit to pick Washington, the Huskies might start becoming unfashionable.

Maybe more galling to USC fans, McMurphy picks USC to play Texas in the Alamo Bowl (The Sarkisian Bowl! if he doesn’t get fired) with Oregon facing Tulane in the Fiesta Bowl.

USC behind Washington and Oregon? That means USC will be worse this season despite having a better roster than in 2022. I’m skeptical but I don’t project bowls all year like McMurphy.

I hate being in the position to think the Grinch-led defense will do what it takes in big games but like I said, Oregon flatters to deceive lately and unlike everyone else, I still worry about Michael Penix surviving a whole season. Why? In four seasons at Indiana, Penix never played more than six games.

  • Three-star defensive end Emmanuel Okoye of London, England, a Class of 2024 prospect, will announce his college choice today. It’s down to USC, Tennessee and Texas Tech.

UPDATED: Okoye committed to Tennessee this morning.

  • USC defeated Loyola Marymount, 8-6, on Tuesday night in Westchester. Johnny Olmstead hit two home runs as USC enhanced its NCAA Tournament hopes.
  • Aaron Butler, a four-star “athlete” from Calabasas High School who was committed to USC for one year before he changed his mind, has committed to Colorado.

    1. Good morning Ed, I’m going to include some glasses during my visit with you this afternoon , because you’re sounding more like a Fuc-Tard every day. Let Missus know that I’ll accept her offer of a Peenus sword 🗡️ fight, but she has to promise not to stick hers in my mouth anymore.

  2. Last year the schedule was about as soft as Charmin.
This year the schedule is looking quite a bit tougher.
and…..in any game within 14 points USC will be flagged with illegal procedure or holding every 3rd play…..pac 12 refs at work against the conference traitors last year.
A realistic record expectation might be 9 wins.

    1. I don’t think USC can sneak up on teams anymore, because everyone is very aware of how talented Caleb Williams is. Any opponent knows they have to control the line of scrimmage in order to beat the Trojans, which really isn’t a difficult task, because that been their weakness for over a decade. Lincoln Riley will get exposed next season in the Big Ten, because that conference isn’t SOFT like the PAC 12.

      1. SC wasn’t sneaking up on anyone after the first quarter of the season because of a little thing called scouting and game film. The key at the line of scrimmage against SC is to not over penetrate keeping Williams in the box and collapsing the pocket while bringing heat from the edge (Washington does this well)
In the secondary, defenses need to throw a lot of looks out of several set ups. Probably using a spy back often. And as always give away, take away ratios and penalties are permanent

  3. So Washington’s coach DeBoer aka ‘The Bore’ was 87-8 in places like Sioux Falls,
“Go USF, Go USF,” but is that sustainable in the Pac-12, soon to become the Pac-10?

  4. If the Washington Muskies are such a great team, why weren’t they invited to the Big 10? Oh I see it’s media money. And Oregon playing Tulane sounds about right since most of their major thoroughfares are two lanes. ( provides own rimshot).
All predictions, as were those of the past are predicated on past performance, commonly the season prior to the prediction. Based on the Helton/Williams combination of stupid and lame USC was predicted to be in the back of the PACk last season. With a few good players and better coaching USC overachieved according to predictions.
It’s obvious that USC was underperforming last season toward the end, but that should not be a predictor of this season.
I understand USC’s coaching staff made some mistakes such as not pulling Caleb once he pulled a leg muscle or having no special team’s coach, but that’s how games are played, by matching wits with talent. We went from witless to well let me just say more wits than witless.
If Grinch’s squad doesn’t get marked improvement immediately I can more accurately predict torches and pitchforks before the season hits the median.

    1. SC lost the Tulane bowl game due to dropped pass in end zone and missed field goal(s) and no tackling at the end of game at all (just bumping opposing runners). Moral of story: the turtle wins the race from the hare because it has defensive armor – Aesops Football Fables.

It is a composite of team failure that led to 3 losses last year, although that Utah away game was rigged by refs against SC. Every game this year will be totally rigged against SC to give them a goodbye message. I would rather watch pro wrestling. But who knows, maybe the players take things into their own hands?

USC is gonna have to deal with a built-in conflict having enemy refs call it’s games….

      1. I read that too. Who knew? But what does it really mean? Are they waiting for the the PAC 10 to disintegrate? Do you have any thoughts about what will happen to the other 8 teams? I’m sure you’d like to see the Bruins beat some of their longest rivals (besides USC) but will that happen if Cal goes to the Mountain West? (I am asking for an honest opinion, as something to read beside the middle school prattle we get from im-posters.)

      2. Your mistaken. Washington or Oregon will REPLACE UCLA.

Washington lost to UCLA. Let that sink in. Oregon lost their offensive coordinator and On-line coach. They’re done.

If USC had enough depth, they could have overcome the lame play calling that made them so predictable at the end of last season. Now, with more continuity, they can be more sophisticated and unpredictable.

Remember Owns, Michigan and Ohio St are not Bruin stupid and bringing in more competition. They sent the commissioner packing who tried to add those schools.

  6. It is heart warming that the PAC 12 does not have a media deal set up late in the contract year.

USC is 30% of the value of the PAC and yet treated us like the other bums like oregon and wash.

    Love it.

  7. The University of Southern California is being sued over an online degree program that former students allege is an overpriced “diploma mill.” The class-action complaint, filed Thursday by graduates of the private Los Angeles university’s online Master in Social Work program, accuses the school of misrepresenting the program’s offerings and providing an inferior, outsourced version of the on-campus MSW degree, aggressively recruiting students of color. Note: Can former USC football players and boosters/ticket holders during the Helton disaster sue on the same basis of “providing an inferior version” of USC football?

    1. I wonder if that is the program offered by 2U? That is a company that sets up these online degree programs and aggressively recruits for them, using the brand name of major universities.

This is why we pay Folt the big bucks. To reduce the value of every degree with her incompetence.

Did Folt get hired as part of the munchkin diversity program?

If SC can take two out of three from uofa, I think they have a very strong case in getting into the ncaa tournament. They will suprise a lot of teams because of their bats. However, lately, pitching has picked up We will see.

  10. even though recruiting is heading in the right direction, i still feel like something about the message this staff sends to recruits is not working. USC should be knocking it out of the park, not just getting a little better. maybe it is NIL.

they really wanted Okuye. he is a freak and is only 3 star due to coming from England.

  12. People picking Washington over Oregon are biased. They have a bad secondary with poor depth. They also are suspect at running back. Oregon St would be a better choice.
