USC Saturday Buzz: More Fallout From Mike Bohn

Here’s an interview I did with KNX (97.1 FM) on Friday about the departure of Mike Bohn. Listen here.

  • You know who is probably getting some amusement over the Bohn situation? The Pac-12 athletic directors who were upset over the clandestine manner Bohn orchestrated the move to the Big Ten.

The schadenfreude is high in the Pac-12 regarding Bohn. I’d love to be able to see texts or emails within the conference Friday.

There were definitely some USC employees also enjoying the moment.

“He let his minions do all the work,” one said Friday. “He was a guy who liked to shake hands.”

  • I think USC will hire another outsider (like Pat Chun) but before we go further, let’s list some usual suspects and/or athletic directors with USC ties that might be interested in the job. Someone will mention them sooner or later:

Mark Jackson, Villanova: Served two stints at USC, close to Pete Carroll, which is a plus. Was also close to Steve Sarkisian, which is a negative.

Daryl Gross, Cal State L.A.: Formerly at Syracuse for 11 years. Was No. 2 under Mike Garrett at USC and succeeded him at Cal State L.A. Applied for USC job when it previously opened.

Michael Alford, Florida State: His stint at USC was during the Mike Garrett era so a lot of people don’t remember this connection. But he’s now got a good job and is taking a high profile nationally as Florida State tries to get more money from the ACC. His wife is from Southern California.

Brandon Martin, Missouri-Kansas City: Was also A.D. at Cal State Northridge, where he was fired. But has resurrected career in Kansas City. Serves on the NCAA Division I Council.

Brandon Sosna, Detroit Lions: You know he wants the job and he’s close to Lincoln Riley and Carol Folt, which gives him a leg up. But he’s never been an athletic director and how tarnished is he from being Bohn’s Mini-Me?

  1. Go for the best qualified person not someone who has connections to SC. If they have connections to SC, they might have the wrong connections. There is a woke crowd of administrators and professors who hate the football program. What does a professor at USC make…..$150,000 a year? $200,000 a year? LR makes 50 times that amount. Even some of the players nowadays make many times what they make. These professors think of LR as a dumb glorified jock while they have their PhD’s(forget the fact that he works 50 times as hard as they do). They want to downgrade the football program. It’s pure jealousy.
You have professors all over the country who feel that way. But in Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State and Michigan those professors keep quiet about their hate for major college athletics because if they don’t they’ll find themselves selling tennis rackets in a sporting goods store. But this is the Left Coast where those woke progressives feel bold.

      2. Outside of his political idealogy, how can you not like Bernie… If you have HBO, go back and watch one of Bill Maher’s recent shows with Bernie and Russell Brand as guests.

Brand might be perceived as a goofball, but when it comes to issues between the left and right, he’s sharp as a tack and bashes both sides equally.

      3. You said “Outside of his political idealogy, how can you not like Bernie”? That’s like saying “outside of his killing 50 million chinese how can you not like Mao”? As far as Brand is concerned, I’m seeing a lot of guys like him nowadays(Charles Barkley, Bill Mahr, David Horowitz and many others who used to be on the left are starting to see the writing on the wall and where all this is going. If I had lived back in the days of Harry Truman I would have definitely had been a dem. I didn’t leave the dems. They left me, especially when they started telling us how a man can have a baby and you can be a boy today and a girl tomorrow and there is not just 2 genders but 50-100 and we need to defund the police……..

      4. With respect to Bernie, I like the guy as a person who respects people even if he doesn’t agree with them. I have listened to some of his non-political stories and they
were very interesting. A good decent person should not be judged by his elected job.

I absolutely despised Bush Jr. due to his complete lack of oversite related to the housing crash and and making it personal with Saddam, out side of that I thought he was a good person that truly did a lot for minorities.

We can agree to disagree regarding Bernie!

      5. I’ll give you this much, Gabby. Bernie is the only one on the left that I really think is honest. He really believes this stuff. I don’t. I have never believed in socialism. I’ve never saw it work anywhere. It’s a system that offers people a lot of free stuff. It creates an entitlement mentality. But it doesn’t deliver.
When the people don’t get what they expect, they start becoming violent. Now you have to control the violence. You either bring in the storm troopers or you have anarchy. If you bring in the storm troops you have a lot of people getting killed and maybe the storm troops take over but now they have to keep power. There’s an old saying…..”power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely”. You end up with dictators.
If you show me a form of socialism that allows freedom and doesn’t try to make everyone equal when they are not, I have no problem with socialism. But, again, of all those on the far left Bernie Sanders and maybe a few others are the only ones that I don’t think are hypocrits. Bernie Sanders will come right out and tell you the truth, namely that if we put his system in, taxes are going to go up bigtime. He doesn’t try and deceive you.

      6. If you think socialism is evil. Trump used socialism to save capitalism. It kept corporate America from a total meltdown. You need a limited amount of socialism or the middle class would erode and capitalism would suffer due to the inability to generate revenue. In reality, you need both. Where the balance is between the two is a hot topic!

        Liked by 1 person

      7. I understand that capitalism has its problems. Churchill once said that “capitalism is the worst system around…..EXCEPT for all of the rest of the systems”. Not to over quote Churchill but he also said “capitalism is the unequal distribution of wealth”(2% of the people are filthy rich, 78% are middle class and about 20% are poor when capitalism is working right)…..”Socialism is the equal distribution of poverty”(the 78% get moved into the 20% and now you have 98% poor…they are equal…equally poor) and “communism is socialism with a gun to your head”( it’s forced socialism and therefore a dictatorship).
Even Karl Marx wrote that economic systems evolve towards a classless society. The first step is feudalism. Then comes capitalism( he actually believed that capitalism was a step on the road to a classless society. Then comes socialism. Then comes communism and then we finally get to the classless society.
In the 1917 communist revolution, there was a revolution which threw out the czar. But there was still 2 factions 1) the soviets and 2) the manchevicks. The manchevicks wanted to go through the stages of economic systems outlined by Marx. The soviets said let’s skip some of the stages and go stright to communism and eventually the classless society. Only we never get to the classless society.
I just don’t believe in socialism. The weakness of capitalism is that the rich start to take over, which is what is happening now all over the world. Capitalism is the best system around as long as they maintain free, fair elections and maintain a school system where kids are being educated and not indoctrinated. Once they lose that, they end up in the same place as socialism….a dictatorship.

Here’s my solution: When it is pretty obvious when somebody is not the real somebody, then just don’t answer them. Treat them like they don’t exist. Sooner or later they’ll get tired of putting comments up there and getting no responses.
But I still can’t understand why Scott doesn’t do something. You would think that he puts a lot of work into this only to have some crazies go out of their way to destroy it. That’s what I think that they are trying to do. Most of these imposters don’t know the difference between a football and a watermellon.

I guess there is some places for censorship but I’d like to avoid it as much as possible. You and I disagree on politics. That’s OK. I’m for free speech. To have a different viewpoint on a subject than someone else is one thing. To come on the forum and impersonate someone else, making statements in his name….statements that he never made….that’s a totally different thing. That has to be stopped.
These guys come on the forum and call you all kinds of lewd names and you get mad and start calling them lewd names. You play the game. That’s exactly what they want. These guys are not here for football. They don’t know anything about football. They’re here to make people mad. I wouldn’t give them the time of day. Just ignore them.

To me, an AD’s job is to come in with a plan that will bring great success on the field and then sell it to the BOT’s so he can get what he needs to fulfill that plan. That was the problem with Swann and Haden. They had no plan for success. They were “Yes” men who took the high paying job and the sat back and played golf or whatever they did for their pleasures. They did nothing to bring great success on the field which is exactly what the BOT’s wanted.

  7. Based on the Times article, it appears that Bohn was fired because he didn’t fit into the established “culture” of the university. Employees who worked in the athletic department, especially women, didn’t like him. He brought in his own people from Cincinnati and delegated most of the AD tasks to them. He wouldn’t show up to meetings. So what. He got us Reilly and Stankiewicz and donations are way up and the revenue stream will continue to increase once we make the move to the B10. There are no legitimate grounds for termination set forth in the Times article. Over time, this stupid decision could cost USC big time. You don’t fire successful people simply because “they don’t fit in” and that is what happened here.

Amazingly, they have to go back to Cincinnati to find anyone who will say that Bohn was involved in inappropriate touching and that does not seem to be so inappropriate. “He put his hand on my shoulder.” Again, so what. Did you tell him you don’t like it when he does that? And the USC administrative women are all anonymous. He allegedly said something about someone’s weight, or the dress they were wearing, or their new hairdo. Again, so what. Where’s the context. He was in the job for over 3 years and that is all you can come up with. Nothing close to sexual harassment.

The problem is that she doesnt have the balls to just say that she has made a decision to make a switch of management and take the heat for it. Instead she has to try to destroy the person so she can get away without making a decision based solely on her authority/preference.

      1. Gabby: Why the reference to Amazon. I thought it was a gift.

You have suggested multiple times that I should not use the term “woke.” You claim that it cannot be properly defined and is now being used by paranoid right wingers to criticize anything they disagree with. I think your missing the point. I first became familiar with that term after the BLM/George Floyd riots when I visited the BLM website. At that time, BLM was very candid with their beliefs and what they wanted to accomplish. The founders described themselves as trained Marxists. America was inherently racist and evil and so was capitalism. They were Atheists who stated that religion was an artifact invented by the white man to oppress people of color. They were opposed to the nuclear family which they described as being part of the white patriarchy. The founders were lesbians who were pro trans and people of color. Significantly, BLM had a plan on how to impose their racist Marxist views on others. They would start CRT with victims and oppressors as early as kindergarten. They also wanted kids to learn that there sexuality was not determined by their genitalia. To that end, BLM had a whole list of books and teaching resources that were designed to be used in the school system. I looked at the resources and it was truly shocking. Everything was gear toward the evil history of America, slavery, racist cops, evil white people, the joy of same sex relationships, ect. A few days later, I reviewed a letter from a BLM representative that had been sent to a Catholic school. They demanded that their curriculum be implemented into the school along with the hiring of black teachers or BLM would initiate protest based on the school’s supposedly racist history.

BLM has received over 80 billion in donations from corporations to implement their anti American, anti God, anti family, Marxist agenda. The Obama/Biden administration has join this effort. As stated by Obama, “in just a few days we will begin fundamentally change the country.” That is a lot of money, power, and influence. I take the threat seriously and you can see the affects. Folt saying USC is systematically racist and implementing DEI into admission practices. Parents who oppose CRT being targeted by the FBI. The President saying white supremacists are the biggest threat to our country. Sex change operations paid by the DOD. FBI infiltrating the catholic church. Openly queer cross dressers holding key positions in the Biden administration, ect. Gabby, I am not paranoid. The agenda is real and so is the attempt to implement it.

    4. There has been a true tidal shift in the past 40+ years of women entering previously male dominated domains. It began in the early 80’s in aerospace and quickly spread as the need to pay bills for women w.o. a successful husband rose.

For anyone to assume this was a witch hunt is because the target is assumed guiltless. If it was as borderline ‘inappropriate touching’ that would not warrant his getting fired as he would have been told to cease and desist and a prudent manager would quickly realize what was at stake. No one knows the full extent of what caused his getting sacked but it would seem it he was acting like a fool with plenty of national examples of what not to do. (whole woke movement i.e. Al Franken D-MN 2017…Charlie Rose, Bill O’Reilly on and on). This is100% on him this isn’t 1983 it’s 2023.

This should never have happened and I believe there is fire here that he brought on himself – couple that with the alluded to his being absent from mtgs as well as his aversion to making a position or taking a decision when that is what a top mgr is expected to do – discharge.

  10. Bohn screwed up the NIL platform greatly because he wanted too much control. The Cincinnati posse were supposed to have all money run through BLVD and people saw through that.

Go ahead and offer Jarmond, he’s got credibility with the B1G people and he’ll be affordable plus, he’d abandon UCLA like it was a cheap suit.

    1. What a load of BS Pissley. Jarmond wears sharp bespoke suits. Why would he leave Westwood for the sleazy, ghetto located, Methodist College known as Clown U or Communist China U.

Working for SUCC, tar’s and feather’s you as a two-bit, end of the line, loser.

      1. Because USC doesn’t anybody anything. Unlike UCLA who had to beg Under Armor not to sue them for $86 million. How’s that crypto GoFundMe going for paying off Gavin Newsome and the Berkley buddies? If you move fast enough, Kamala’s in town, maybe she can get her boss to slide some loose change to help offset the palimony.

  11. Carol Folt said it all when she said, “going in a different direction closely associated with our core values.”
I am not rooting for any person to replace Bohn, I think Folt stepped in a turd and is laying the groundwork for her own hastily worded departure. When you say no one is above the law, you are asserting that you are.

[There are reports Carol cried in her office when someone said the word “Lincoln.” When she was asked why the football coach’s name would bring her to tears she said “Oh, that Lincoln —I thought you were talking about the racist President”]……

  14. A further thought about ‘Bone’ is why was he effectively fired, if that is what happened? ‘Withjout-a-Folt’ made it clear in her “Goodbye Bohn’ address that she was ticked off at him. Was it justified?

And if he was not fired then why did he make such a hasty decision to leave?– And only a day after the Times’ writer asked for a statement from him? Was what Bone did so terrible and indefensible; presumably he didn’t sexually assault anyone

The way I see it is the guy had personality limitations and probably dealing with women was not his strong suit. There may have been some misunderstandings that a guy like Guarino could talk his way out of (he’s had a lot of experience), but not so Mr. Bone

And the way he played this really sullies his reputation and SC’s as well

  15. I’m telling you folks, he let his people go crazy against the wrong person and didn’t run his department like a competent manager is expected to do. WE ALL KNOW THAT IF RILEY WANTED BOHN, HE’D NEVER GETS PUSHED AWAY.

Forget about the woman in Nebraska. What about the voters in Pennslyvannia who voted in a guy who can’t put one sentence together when he speaks….what’s his name? ….Fetterman?

      1. I don’t know what Fettermans IQ is. Maybe he’s pretty smart. His problems are a result of a stroke. That’s unfortunate. But still……it is what it is. There are plenty of people living on the streets who walk around telling people that they are Napolean. I don’t know what got them to that mental state. Many of them probably have some unfortunate stories. But still you don’t vote them in as state senators or representatives(or whatever he is).
