The USC baseball team wrapped up its regular season on Thursday and is projected to make the NCAA Tournament. The Trojans (34-23-1) find out officially Monday when the bracket is released.
Freshman Austin Overn hit .314 with four home runs, 38 RBI, 54 runs scored and a nation-leading 14 triples.
- Attendance for Tuesday’s City Section Division I baseball semifinals at Dedeaux Field was more than 1,100. That’s more than USC usually draws.

- This is the USC 440-yard relay team setting its world record of 38.6 seconds at the NCAA championships in Provo, Utah, in 1967. Fred Kuller hands the baton to O.J. Simpson. The record still stands today because of the switch to meters in races.
- Nothing to see here. Just a Big Wheel race at halftime of the USC-Stanford game on the Coliseum track in 1979.
- Los Angeles Rams rookies reported in 1958 and included defensive back K.C. Jones (42) and former Oregon halfback-defensive back Jack Morris. Jones wisely decided to play basketball for the Boston Celtics from 1958-67, where he won eight NBA championships. Morris rushed for a then-school-record 212-yards against USC in 1957.
- Jim Brown, who died last week, played in the 1960 Pro Bowl at the Coliseum.
- This was one of the biggest days in the history of USC’s Bovard Auditorium with two sold-out shows on Dec. 15, 1952. Comedian Joe E. Brown performed in the Living War Memorial Variety show at 12 p.m. The LWM raised scholarship money for children of veterans who were killed in military service.
Then at 3:15 p.m., USC professor Frank Baxter delivered his famed Christmas recital of prose and poetry. Now, for me, the idea of Baxter reading “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens sounds like a good way to induce sleep. But Baxter’s annual Christmas readings at Bovard Auditorium were events in themselves. One year, students clustered around loudspeakers outside in the rain, clutching their umbrellas as they listened intently, because there were no seats available inside.
By 1952, he did two Christmas shows, one for the students and two days later, an evening performance for the general public. By 1956, he had his own role in the science fiction film, “The Mole People.”
Some trivia: Did you know Joe E. Brown’s son, Joe L. Brown, was general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1955-76?

All cause mortality within the vaccine group was 23% higher than in the placebo group. Pfizer also acknowledged serious risk for myocarditis.
These are the results from Pfizer’s own study on its vaccine.

At first I wondered what the big deal was about a big wheel race, but I remember them being a kids toy from 1969. The original design was for a kid between 50 and 90 lbs. If you add 100 lbs. to that, the front wheel doesn’t get much traction. Now imagine pedaling that thing a quarter mile and you’ll get a leg cramp just thinking about it. The big thing to do on those was spin out by stopping the front wheel and skidding around with the rear. I never rode one but I knew people who made their own version for adults, they still had to lean forward to get the front wheel to pull.

I hate that he has to get a dig in about attendance at a college baseball game. With the Dodgers, Angels and four minor league teams (that I can think of) in the area combined with the poor showing in recent years, it’s possible the Trojans had trouble getting the player’s families to show up. Maybe Scott is pointing out that the numerous USC students from around the world aren’t as sports minded as the locals once were, but the last time I checked games are recorded by who won, not by who showed up.

What no one on this boards states is that we somehow avoided a catastrophe that should have devastated the planet because the Trump Administration helped get vaccines developed and medical information to the right folks who helped create policies that allowed our country to move on from the pandemic to a state of endemic and the Biden Administration was smart to continue the correct course of action without imposing a federal mandate on closures like China did, until February 2023 and now China is suffering from a GDP growth lower than 3% as well as a hostile nation that refuses to accept lockdowns.
