Los Angeles Country Club just staged the U.S. Open.
Remember in 2019, a group of business leaders and USC alumni mounted a behind-the-scenes campaign against Rick Caruso’s bid to join the country club in retaliation for the dismissal of business school dean Jim Ellis, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Caruso withdrew his application.
The U.S. Open was considered a disappointment in terms of atmosphere. There were only 9,000 general admission tickets available and L.A. Country Club bought half of those, so only 4,500 were available to the public. Of course, there were 14,000 tickets for suites and hospitality.
Players complained the crowds were smaller/quieter than expected.
If you get invited to join the exclusive club, the initiation fee is between $300,000-500,000 and monthly dues are $20,000-30,000.
The club’s land is valued around $8-9 billion. The property taxes would be $60-90 million a year but the club pays around $300,000 thanks to a 1960 proposition that said a golf course could no longer be assessed based on its highest and best use.

Jack Nicholson belonged to Riviera and another, Brentwood I think. Larry David is a member of Riviera. Bill Gates is a member of Augusta. How else can afford $20,000 to $30,000 per month on top of a $500,000 initiation fee.

Most of the really challenging private golf courses were built over 100 years ago. You could not duplicate them today because of the cost of the land. I suspect that most if not virtually all of these clubs excluded Blacks and/or Jews at some point in their history. If the PGA or NBC excluded these clubs from tournament play, you would be depriving your viewers of the best courses in the US and viewership would suffer. I am glad they show the Masters.

Riviera Country Club, home to the Genesis Open, is different from the Los Angeles Country Club, which hosted the U. S. Open 2023 and will host the 2039 U. S. Open. Way more conservative than the Riviera Country Club. If you played there, you’d know the difference. Clearly, your not familiar with who the membership of the LACC is. Otherwise, you wouldn’t speak about it.
