Dave Borelli, who won seven national titles as coach of the USC women’s tennis team, has died, according to the university. No cause of death was announced.
His seven national titles are still the most won by a USC women’s sport. And USC women’s tennis has not won a national title since Borelli left in 1988.
He won national titles in 1977 (2), 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1983 and 1985. Borelli’s teams won 88 straight home matches over an eight-year period.
Borelli coached 56 All-Americans and seven NCAA singles and doubles champions, including Barbara Hallquist (1977); Stacy Margolin (1978); Anna Maria Fernandez (1981) and Beth Herr (1983). Anne White and Trey Lewis won the NCAA doubles title in 1980.
He was also a member of the USC men’s tennis team in the 1970’s. Borelli also coached men’s tennis and women’s tennis for 12 seasons at TCU.
The fact is USC has not come close to his success in women’s tennis since he left.

WELCOME DAVE BORELLI – NEW TENNIS PRO
We would like to welcome Dave Borelli, who has joined the staff of Nellie Gail Tennis & Kaveon International Tennis. Prior to coming to Nellie Gail, Dave served as a Men’s Professional Tour Coach for the USTA, and headed the Rookie Pro program for USA development. His team saw Alex Kim, Robby Ginepri and Mardy Fish come up through the ranks.
A 1974 graduate of USC, Borelli was a four-year varsity member of the Trojans’ men’s team, and was named USC’s Outstanding Scholar Athlete as a senior. He spent 14 seasons coaching at USC, where his teams earned 7 national championships, 3 runner-up finishes and 10 conference championships. During this tenure, he coached 5 individuals to NCAA singles championships, 2 pairs to NCAA doubles championships, and a total of 56 college All-Americans. He has spent 21 seasons coaching at the collegiate level for both USC & TCU, compiling a 416-107 overall record.
Dave specializes in doubles strategy, and working with elite junior players – from beginner to pro level. We are thrilled to have this addition to the Nellie Gail family and look forward to the success of our juniors & adults under his instruction. Welcome Dave!
