The Jen Cohen press conference was a testament to bureaucracy.
You had the following people speak at the podium:
Joel Curran, chief communications officer
Carol Folt, university president
Jen Cohen, athletic director
Suzanne Nora Johnson, chair of the Board of Trustees
Andrew Guzman, provost
Alan Green, faculty athletic representative
The only thing missing were Shecky Greene and Slappy White.
Who wanted to hear any of these people besides Cohen?
And then when Cohen spoke afterward, there was another university handler and Curran nearby to monitor. She might want to go back to Washington after all this.
- Cohen said her nickname at Washington was “Sideline Jen” because of the way she would cheer on the sidelines at games.
Sideline Jen replacing Coach Bohn. It has a ring to it.
Slappy White? That’s funny, Scott

That almost sounds like a positive endorsement by Wolf. Perhaps he can be her best fan boy and get special “inside” info. Naa, it won’t happen.

Wolf has a point. These university bureaucracies are ridiculous. Have Folt introduce her and let her talk about her vision for the athletic department. We don’t need to hear from a communications officer, provost or faculty athletic representative. In fact, USC should eliminate at least half of its administrative positions and all of the DEI positions and programs since USC is already a wildly diverse campus and pass the cost savings onto the students in the form of lower tuition. Get rid of the dead weight.

There are advantages to being on the ‘outside’ … Scott is free to tell the truth …try listening to Dan Weber ….

Completely agree with Scott Wolf here. I hope #SidelineJen isn’t the same shameless self-promoter that #PresidenHotLips is with the selfies. I had a very vague idea of what Steven Sample even looked like.

Wolf got that one right–
The look on Jen Cohen’s face as she looks at ‘Without-a-Folt’ pontificating
says “I want to go back to Washington”

Wolf went from on the inside to on the outside looking in to on the outside sitting on the couch”. Over all the years, I can’t recall a more pathetic effort from Scott regarding a total lack of fall camp info. Seems it was grievance after grievance, day after day.

The question is whether Jen Cohen can work with Lincoln Riley. She hired Kalen Deboer and was instrumentally involved in hiring Chris Petersen. She recognized the mistake in hiring Jimmy Lake after two years and canned him. Frank and Hot Lips, left to their own devices, would’ve never fired Clay Helton (if not for alumni shutting down the donation fire hydrant).

Hugs probably reminded Flo of Roy Williams (albeit without any coaching ability). Jen Cohen just keep Carol Folt out any involvement with what you’re working on and you should do fine.

Agree that Scott doesn’t have a lot of inside information. Neither do other services. It is a product of Reilly’s desire to shut down information. His fall practices are largely closed. I don’t agree with Reilly on this point and hope he opens things up over time but it seems unfair to blame Scott for the lack of information on fall camp.

Dan Weber, who hasn’t been around the program for over three years, posted numerous interviews and opinions of what he saw at practices. Scott is a couch potato, why throw shade for him.

I think Reilly only allowed interviews maybe 3 times during camp and Dan happened to be around on one of those days. He didn’t allow Dan or anyone else to watch practices, or the scrimmages, or record them. We really don’t know what’s going on other than tidbits from the interviews – “the line is coming along well”, “Monheim has progressed and rarely misses an assignment”, “Solomon Byrd had 4 sacks in the scrimmage”,” Zachariah Branch is special, great speed and catching radius”, “Tackett Curtis is superman,”ect. Hard to trust these assessments or get excited about them when you can’t see the players perform. Don’t blame Scott for it.

For a smart guy Gabby sure sez some some dumb shit…. folks don’t come here expecting to see secretly filmed practice videos —we want [and get] a seasoned observer’s opinions …and we take it from there…..

Although those who have said Cohen is “hot for her age” or has a “pretty face” is funny, too. I realize beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, but come on. (Now if you want to say “compared to other AD’s”….MAYBE. LOL)

There were more than a couple of Gabby/So Cal exchanges that actually had me laughing [not laugh out loud laughing …but the kind of laugh where you don’t quite make a sound].
The only problem with the exchanges is, not being a Marxist, I always found myself on your side of the exchange. Doesn’t mean Gabby isn’t clever — or a good match for us. Just that he’s always wrong.
Wish he had shown more compassion over Maui, though. [Btw, Joe was here —he read from a legal tablet of notes without looking up and didn’t take any questions cuz “he was too choked up”]….

She is really smart and it looks like she doesn’t miss any meals. Can we find a collective who can keep home town recruits from leaving LA. That’s what’s I’m concerned going forward. We can’t keep going to the TSP every year, we need to develop our freshman OL recruits right now. If we are going to have sustained success that is a must. We can’t rely on a elite QB n WR’s to carry the team moving to the Big. Our coaches need to develop every player at all positions to maximize our championship goals.
