If It’s Friday, It’s Time For A USC Notes Column

According to the rumor mill, Colorado coach Deion Sanders demoted offensive coordinator Sean Lewis last week because he heard Lewis was looking for another job.

  • I’m hearing Arizona coach Jedd the Fisch being mentioned as candidate at Michigan State.
  • This seems like an overreaction.
  • USC announced Thursday night’s basketball game was a sellout. Does it look sold out?
https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
  • And now for some history:
  • USC opened the 1986 season with a 31-16 victory over Illinois. No. 58 is linebacker Marcus Cotton. The Trojans started the season 4-0 before being upset at Washington State. They finished 7-5 and Ted Tollner was fired.
  • Tight end Fred Davis catches a pass in the 2007 USC-UCLA game. USC won, 24-7 and went 11-2 that season.
  • USC football coach Jeff Cravath wrote quite an article for Collier’s Magazine three years after he retired in 1953 with the headline, “The Hypocrisy of College Football.”

Cravath charged college football reduced athletes to “perjurers, scalpers and football gigolos.

“The methods by which all of us obtained and maintained players were rotten and corrupt.”

Cravath talked about recruiting halfback Johnny Olszewski, a St. Anthony High School in Long Beach star player who became an All-American at Cal.

A USC alumnus offered Olszewski a new car, $150 a month during his college career, expenses through law school and a junior partnership in the alumnus’ law firm after graduation.

After the Collier’s story was published, Olszewski said he “never heard” of the offer detailed by Cravath. But once he heard the details, Olszewski said the offer, “sounds good, anyways.”

Cravath co-wrote the article with Mel Durslag, a USC graduate who worked for the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner and Los Angeles Times.

Cravath, who became a rancher after coaching at USC, died in 1953 in an auto accident. He played at USC and among his teammates were John Wayne and Ward Bond.

  • In 1955, USC’s tuition increased from $20 a unit to $22.

RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK

A Filet Mignon dinner for $2.50. A Chicken dinner and drink for $3. Bar of Music was located near the famous El Coyote mexican cafe on Beverly Blvd. and not too far from Farmer’s Market in 1955.

  • In the 1979 movie, “Players” with Ali MacGraw and Dean Paul Martin, Martin plays a pro tennis player who presumably attended USC.

  1. In Steve Delsohn’s “Cardinal and Gold” he articulates with greater detail the rationale underlying Tollner’s firing after the 1986 season. It wasn’t just a 4-0 start, but also at 7-2 USC was on the verge of getting selected for a New Year’s at-large berth, and it was well-known that Tollner had been succeeding with recruiting (witness the early success of Larry Smith with talent-laden teams that sputtered out)…but then they not only lost to UCLA, but blew a huge lead against Notre Dame…and still played on New Year’s, but got destroyed by Auburn’s defense. Tollner deserved to get fired (he lhad a losing season and lost to Kansas in 1983, let an 8-1 start go to waste in 1984, and then the above in 1986), but he wasn’t as bad as it seemed (since he inherited the position after JRob1 and the first time the NCAA tried to take a wrecking ball to the USC football program).

The Cravath article is gold, and all the more so given that (like him or hate him), we’re watching what was done to USC and Pete Carroll, and previously for example to Barry Switzer at Oklahoma, be done to Harbaugh and Michigan, over the issue of “cheating” in a sport where the Alabamas and Ohio States (and now Kansas in basketball) do what USC should have done in 2009-10 (where it not for the knucklehead AD, hero player though he was), and simply tell the NCAA to pound sound and lawyer up if they feel froggy.

    1. Tollner’s first year SC lost at home to Kansas, got bombed at S Carolina, at ND, ASU at home, shutout at UDUB and lost to ucla.

Next season SC loses to LSU but somehow they beat #1 UDUB and then go on to lose to ucla & ND, both game they weren’t close to being in but they go to the RB and stun OSU. Tollner was given an extension after beating Ohio State in the 1984 Rose Bowl, sound familiar ?

Next season SC loses to Baylor, ASU, gets slaughtered at ND 37-3, Cal, UDUB, somehow beats ucla ( Rodney Peete completed 10 passes in the game, all to TE Joe Cormier ) and then gets blown away by Bama in Hawaii.

His last season SC loses to WSU, ASU, ucla, ND & Auburn.

Tollner was 0-4 against ND, 1-3 against ucla, 1-3 against ASU and just about any team or any quality SC got smoked, aside from the 2-3 miracles they pulled off

Tollner should never have been given the job to begin with, Dave Levy was the man that should have been hired.

      1. With respect, some do – and more should – the problems at USC are long-standing and institutional. The hiring of Riles and Helton stretch back to the hiring of Tollner. That is the problem that has to be fixed, if that is possible. McKay and Pete were gifts from the gods, and had nothing to do with USC getting anything right, other than by dumb luck.

Think Levy was earlier – should have gotten job over JRob first timein 1976 (went on to be part of the Air Coryell staff with Joe Gibbs, Jim Hanifan, Ernie Zampeze, et al … seem to recall having read that McKay was not happy about that although he liked JRob). Want to say JRob1’s last defensive coordinator is the one identified in the book I reference who many believed should have been hired rather than Tollner (Tollner from what I recall and have read was JRob’s preference, given his previous reliance on…gulp…Paul Hackett, since Tollner had been an OC at SDSU then for JRob in ’82 – that also, to borrow your expression, “sounds familiar” doesn’t it).

What is the reason for me(or anybody else) voting for Biden or the dems? It’s costing me twice as much to live. Crime is rampant. It’s going to get worse because Biden and the dems have opened the border and invited anyone in. If 99 out of every 100 illegals are just good hard working people looking for a better life but the other one is a hardened MS13 person(or other gang member) or a cartel member of a hate-america terrorist or even a chinese government terrorist who will kill, rape, rob or maim…..think about it……they say that 8 million illegals have come into this country since Biden became president……1/100 times 8 million equals 80,000 terrorists who are going to do a lot of harm. It’s that attitude that you can spend your way out of debt that bothers me. Try that with your credit card and see how that works.
And the inflation rate is not 3.7 %. You can keep the inflation rate numbers down just by the way you calculate it. Last year they gave social security an 8 % raise. That should tell you that even with their gimmied way of calculating SSI, it is going up fast..
How many people on this blog really think the price of living has just gone up 3.7% since Biden took office. Just take gas. When Trump left office, I was paying $3 a gallon in California. Three years later I’m paying $5. About a month ago I payed $5.70. It’s gone down. From $3 to $5 in 3 years….That’s not 3.7%.

      20. Biden has nothing to do with the price of gas……Oil is a comodity that’s tied to supply, demand, and world events. If you have issues with the price of gas send letters to the Oil companies voicing your grievances.

People are going to think what they want to think. “But Biden has nothing to do with the price of gas?” The hell he doesn’t. It’s like you said….supply and demand. Biden has shut down supply in the country in every way he possibly could. He has not just shut it down but he has made it a real risk for Oil companies to re-invest in if Trump(or any pro oil candidate) gets back into office. You’re taking a big risk to invest a lot of money into pumping for oil and refineries if it might just last for 4 years and then another dem gets in there and shuts down the whole process again. You say Biden has nothing to do with it. Is it just a co-incidence that gas started to go up like crazy the minute Joe Biden got elected.

      22. From day one of his administration, Biden was set on keeping his campaign promise to “end fossil fuel.” On January 20, 2021, Biden signed an executive order directing the federal government to review and rescind President Trump’s policies that made the United States energy independent. Biden’s first actions also included increasing emissions regulations and restricting domestic energy. And, of course, he killed the Keystone XL Pipeline. The average price for a gallon of gas: $2.379.

There was another executive order focused on enforcing “environmental justice.” A decision to double the amount of wind energy on federal lands. A moratorium on oil and gas leases. And Biden put the United States back into the Paris Climate agreement. By mid-April in Biden’s first year, the national average for a gallon of gas had risen to $2.855.
Summer 2021, a Department of Justice “Climate Action Plan” and a Department of Energy determination to ramp up regulations that would direct buildings away from using fossil fuel energy sources. By September, the national average for gas had reached $3.176.
More “climate action plans” from federal agencies were released that further regulated and disincentivized reliable American energy.
The Biden administration went after financial institutions to urge them not to do business with fossil fuel companies, required federal properties and contractors to move away from oil and gas, and went all-in on falsely-named “green” energy instead.
Biden attempted to install more anti-fossil fuel cronies in his government, as typified by the nomination of Saule Omarova to lead the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in November, while the average price of gas rose past $3.41 per gallon. So too did Biden attempt to codify his alternative energy policies by levying billions in new taxes on oil and gas companies as part of his Build Back Better budget.
In the first months of 2022, Biden kept his foot on the gas by delaying permits for new oil and gas leases, setting stricter standards for vehicle and power generation emissions, and began hiring for his new falsely-named “Clean Energy Corps” as the average price of gas ticked upward past $3.444 per gallon.
By March, gas costs passed $4.00 per gallon to reach their all-time high while Biden continued regulating, disincentivizing, and demonizing fossil fuels and their connected industries. All the while President Biden, his administration, and Democrats elsewhere have pinned the blame on others rather than admitting they’re just doing what Biden said he would: “end fossil fuel.” Those were his very words which he ran on in the 2020 election.
Later this week, the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council is slated to meet as Biden’s team figures out more actions it can take to embrace “Green” New Deal policies and put oil and gas out of business with an obvious lack of concern for the collateral damage of their plan: the American people and their wallets.
I just don’t see how you could say that he had nothing to do with the rise in gas prices when he ran on the declaration that he was going to put the fossil fuel industry out of business and the minute that he got into office, the price of gas started to go up like crazy and here we are 3 years later and it has almost doubled. Sounds to me like he had something to do with it…..INTENTIONALLY.

      23. Everything you mentioned has nothing to do with supply and demand or OPEC. You only mention environmental policies which we should all respect. Oil companies are drilling over 13 million barrels of oil a day on American soil, the most per day average in the history of this country. And are turning record profits

Once again, Biden has nothing to do with the price of gas. Please get educated. This link should help. You are really confused with the politics versus the production.

      24. Look…I’m not claiming to be an oil and gas expert. Sure they are making big profits. You shut down the oil and gas industry in america like Biden did when he took office and the price of gas is going to skyrocket simply because of supply and demand. You cut down on supply with the same demand and the price goes up like crazy. When the price goes up…of course, the oil companies will make big profits.

For consumers, prices at the grocery store, gas station and car dealership are noticeably higher than in recent memory. A gallon of whole milk in August cost $3.93 on average in the U.S., according to the Labor Department. Though lower than earlier in 2023, it was still nearly $1, or 29%, more than in August 2019.

A gallon of regular unleaded gasoline cost $3.84 on average in August, according to data provider OPIS, 46% higher than the roughly $2.63 a gallon four years earlier.
While the average price of a new vehicle declined over the summer from earlier in the year, it was $45,516 in September, initial estimates from J.D. Power show, compared with $33,822 the same month in 2019.
“The fact that inflation has come down doesn’t mean prices have come down,” said Tim Quinlan, senior economist at Wells Fargo. “For consumers, as long as prices remain elevated, which is what they are from their perspective, it still kind of weighs on confidence.”

Andy Ngo exposed you Violent Democrats so you tried to murder him, just as you Democrats murdered to old Jewish man in West;lake Village, and the criminals who did both violent acts walk free. That is justice under the Senile Joe Regime. You hate him because he exposes you antisemite Democrats.

        Gabby:

You have offended my wife, my mother and my father. All sexual inferences. I let the first two go because they are both deceased but not my wife. You are the one who offended my family, not visa versa. I have never brought your wife or parents into anything. It is therefore my call – boxing gym in Pasadena CA, Mr. tough guy. Give me a date and I will make the arrangements. Stop being a chickensh*t.

And nobody believes you are friends with Dana White. If you ever read the news, he is a staunch conservative who left the country during Covid so that the Dems. couldn’t shut down UFC. He wouldn’t allow a pussy leftist like yourself anywhere near his octagon. Rummaging the dumpster outside of the premises for plastic bottles redeemable for 20 cents doesn’t mean you know Dana White you leftist, racist, pussy.

        Give me available dates.

      2. Just to be clear, Board Coward, Zero Football IQ Charlie Bucket the UCLA Fan aka Cowardly Gabby/TebowObama needs treatment for her paranoid schizophrenia condition. It is a fairly common (and can be severe) mental illness: about 0.32% of the population suffers from it. [Let’s see. There were 331 million Americans in the 2020 Census. I don’t believe they diagnose it (for sure) until one’s late teenage years, so let’s apply it to those Americans and Traitors like Board Coward, Zero Football IQ Charlie Bucket the UCLA Fan aka Cowardly Gabby/TebowObama 18 and over. Google says that 258 million Americans are 18 years old & older: 258 million x 0.0032 = 825,600 people adults who suffer from paranoid schizophrenia, just like Board Coward, Zero Football IQ Charlie Bucket the UCLA Fan aka Cowardly Gabby/TebowObama

  3. Some of us have asked nicely of Wolf if he wouldn’t put aside his Dandy Andy grivances and devote a bit of print to the SC basketball team, potentially one of the Trojans’ best, but this exchange last year with MG fits this year too–

LJ– Should Scott now proclaim “Nice job, Enfield,” but what do I hear but only crickets.

MG- Here’s an idea! Lets stay on site & wait for Scott to say “Thank you Coach Enfield!”

Gabby: I didn’t use the term “white guy.” The CEO of Ocean Gate used the term white guy. I suppose that reading comprehension isn’t one of your strengths. But since you brought my wife into it, something that you would never do if we met face to face, let’s meet up Mr. keyboard tough guy or are you going to chickensh*t out like you normally do. I work out at a boxing gym in Pasadena, CA. Name a date and time and I will make a reservation.

  4. The best game I ever saw in person was the SC v ND game in ‘74. I know a lot of the youngsters on here think that was back in the days of LEATHER helmets, but to me it feels like yesterday. Now to today, I know it seems like things are going SOUTH, but keep the faith, as was the case in that game, we can come back! We can come back to MOTHER earth’s BOSOM, and SUCKLE the sweet nectar of victory!

Beating the Ducks might be a STRETCH, but MARK my words, we will win!
