Morning Buzz: USC-UCLA Report Card

QUARTERBACK

Caleb Williams passed for 384 yards but I thought this was one of his poorer games. Somewhere along this season, Williams decided throwing a lot of sidearm passes was a good idea. And of course, Lincoln Riley can’t control him enough to deter the star QB.

Grade: C-

RUNNING BACK

USC had 3 yards rushing in 22 carries. But you try running with that offensive line blocking for you. USC pretty much wasted MarShawn Lloyd’s talents this season.

Grade: Incomplete

WIDE RECEIVERS

This season in a nutshell: Lincoln Riley had so little faith in Mario Williams and Dorian Singer that neither caught a pass or were even targeted in the game. The stats say Singer didn’t even play. They were projected to be two of the go-to receivers this season. Who to blame? The coaches.

Grade: C

OFFENSIVE LINE

USC rushed for 3 yards. Caleb Williams was running for his life. They committed three penalties. It’s incredible some people thought this line was going to be a big improvement over a year ago. They have been atrocious most of the season. Offensive line coach Josh Henson has laid an egg at USC.

Grade: F

DEFENSIVE LINE

Tailback T.J. Harden rushed for a career-high 149 yards. Just another tailback with a career day against USC. The Bruins had 199 yards rushing overall. Frankly, the defensive line’s been one of the big disappointments this seasin but it gets overshadowed by the secondary and offensive line.

Grade: D+

LINEBACKERS

Think about this: Lincoln Riley and the media fanboys spent all spring and training camp building up Tackett Curtis. Where was he Saturday? The linebacker corps was shorthanded. But Curtis did not make a tackle vs. UCLA. So what went wrong this season with the coaching evaluation?

Grade: D-

DEFENSIVE BACKS

They were pretty bad but some of it got masked by UCLA’s often inept passing game. Still, there were enough miscues to keep the unit’s disastrous reputation intact.

Grade: D

SPECIAL TEAMS

Denis Lynch had a kickoff go out of bounds and missed a 25-yard FG. But USC does not need a special teams coach.

Grade: D

COACHING

Should I focus on the bad playcalling? Or how a coach did not have his team remotely close to being ready to play against the crosstown rival? Or how the defense can’t cover a tight end (see below)?

Lincoln Riley’s done an awful job this season and the lemmings are finally accepting it.

Grade: F

COLISEUM CROWD CLOAKING SEATS

Whoever decided to make the Coliseum seats red deserves a raise because it makes it difficult on TV to tell how many thousands of empty seats there are in the stadium. Look at the picture below. It’s midway through the first quarter, folks, and the stadium looks half empty.

Grade: A

OLIVIA RODRIGO

If the pop singer didn’t show up to root for USC, what other highlight would there have been Saturday? Imagine all the UCLA fans (under 25) who cannot comprehend Rodrigo being a Trojan. That’s right, she’s a Trojan. She’s taken classes at USC. I’d rather have her coach the team. They might play harder.

Calling Riley on what it means to coach at a top tier program like USC and 2. at the very end of the column bluntly noting the selfishness of Caleb Williams for once again after a loss, bailing out on speaking to the press and Riley doing nothing about it.

      1. It doesnt matter who they play- they will lose. Caleb wont play- and he’s really the only reason the offense scored points-Not because of LR’s ” masterful” play calling. If CAL could move the ball like that against SC- then anyone can- as SUCLA showed. I hope LR knows something we don’t know about who his new DC, O line coach, strength and conditioning coach, DB coach, Special Team Coordinator etc.. Not only that- HE has to be the one actually recruiting quality defensive players since he has no staff that can effectively recruit right now. With Helton- we knew we didn’t have a chance- with Riley- not sure wtf we have…
