California assembly representative Phil Ting is proposing a bill that says private institutions giving an admissions tip to relatives of alumni and donors would be denied Cal Grant financial aid.
Per the LA Times: “USC accepted 1,740 applicants with legacy or donor connections, or 14.4% of the fall 2022 admitted class, according to data submitted to the state. Of those, 96% were relatives of alumni and nearly 4% were connected only to donors.”
I’m going to take a wild guess that USC opposes this bill. USC students received nearly $27 million in Cal Grants.
- Patrick Auerbach, the former USC Associate Senior Vice President for Alumni Relations who was behind the controversial plan that dissolved the regional alumni groups in 2020, has a new job.
Auerbach has been hired as a site representative and media relations associate at the NCAA. He is also doing some consulting with the NCAA and UCLA. He abruptly left USC December after 23 years, which suggested a falling out with Carol Folt.
“Giving an admissions tip,” probably should read “Showing admissions bias towards relatives of alumni and donors”
$27 milion in Cal Grants to SC. I thought the state was over-budget

Well, Governor Hair Gel just got Panera a waiver so they don’t have to adhere to the new $20 minimum wage. Why did he do that ? A large donation from Paneras owner

Ting should be more concerned with merchants being ripped off and beaten, all the drug addicts, piles of shit and companies fleeing SF

If you got family $$$ & you’re still pulling bills out of lesser Fortunate Trojans, there’s a special ring in hell for you.

Well, guess what? If you take public funds, you’re no longer a private institution, except in name only and you’re no longer calling the shots.

Sorry Trojans —but the USC basketball team looks so exhausted at the end of games it’s embarrassing —tonight they’re watching the Cougs rebound while they catch their breath…..

Trojans had the lead the first 80% of the game! Cougs caught them at 62 with 6:45 left. What a choke job. Again.

Agreed, So Cal. My friend John is wrong about these games not mattering —they actually demonstrate our inability to finish. I watched in disbelief as the Trojans gasped for breath in the final minutes —unable to even make an effort at rebounding. This is a conditioning issue —and every Pac 12 team knows we’re gonna fold at the end ….so they come on strong & meet with zero resistance.

These games mean nothing. It all comes down to SC having to win 4 straight at the Pac-12 Tournament, a task that is not likely to be done but not beyond lottery odds of accomplishing

There are no real powerhouses in Pac-12 basketball, ‘Are-zone’ is vincible, Wash St beat them at their place, and the balance are about even with maybe 6-points separating most teams. And placing
‘6-points’ over the usual 60 or so scored every night is a small margin indeed, hands-off for most bettors
So, SC has about a 5% chance given most games are close-to-even
but Troy won’t be favored in any of them.– I’d put $100 on the Trojans
but not my house

The idea that your Alma Mater is your half soul is over. For 4 generations my family has supported USC and when it came time for my son to study aerospace engineering, USC was exposed to have a horrible reputation and program. He is a brilliant student, member of Mensa, and USC was revealed to have a non-functional program. After hundreds and hundreds of thousands from our family, we realized that we were absolutely ripped off.

Why do you say this?– Because the SC aerospace engineering program was not up to snuff?

slo cal’s family faced the same issues. After he left USC, he went on for four decades as lead maintenance engineer(aka custodian) at a local office building. He won the Golden Toilet Award multiple times. No one cleans a shitter better than him. I heard his outhouse spackles..

The proposal should bar relatives of donors from Cal Grants.
But I wouldn’t bar applicants related to alumni.
