USC Morning Buzz: Sometimes It Pays To Go Pro

USC defensive tackle Kyon Barrs and cornerback Christian Roland-Wallace will sign free-agent contracts with NFL teams.

Barrs will sign with the Titans and Roland-Wallace is going to the Chiefs.

In retrospect, both would have been better off going pro a year ago instead of transferring from Arizona to USC. That’s part of the gamble when you transfer.

They didn’t raise their draft stock in the past 12 months. In particular, Roland-Wallace probably should have gone pro. He played nearly every play at Arizona but wasn’t sure if he would get drafted.

USC tried to move him to nickel back and playing for Donte Williams didn’t do him any favors. He was still USC’s top cornerback but even going to the NFL combine didn’t help.

Barrs also saw his playing time reduced from when he was at Arizona.

  • Former USC defensive lineman Deijon Laffitte has committed to Fresno State.
  • USC had the most draft picks in the NFL Draft (7) among teams that finished the season unranked.
  • Booker Prize-nominated novelist C Pam Zhang (How Much of These Hills is Gold) and MacArthur Fellow Safiya Noble (Algorithms of Oppression) have withdrawn as keynote speakers for the USC Rossier’s doctoral and master’s commencement ceremonies.

  1. Don’t even read the daily trivial SC football news, take me back to the days of only getting sports news from the Herald and LA. Times

  2. I ofen use this blog as a form of ‘diary’ for memories’ ‘salvation’, and Wolfie’s use of clear black print is ideal-

Aril 28, 2024, Sunday- it does not get better than this, but Dr. Carol to the Miramar for breakfast & the Santa Monica ambiance (before the traffic arrives) excited her, she was in her element with a man hanging on to her as they walked ‘cane-in-hand’

and then to Elysian Park at the usual place taking in Eucalyptus smells in the shade of tall trees as i threw my football around practicing throwing.- ”It don’t get better than that, so-

    Don’t take me yet Lordie

  3. In Algorithms of Oppression, Dr. Safiya Umoja Noble challenges the idea that search engines like Google offer an equal playing field for all forms of ideas, identities, and activities. Data discrimination is a real social problem; Noble argues that the combination of private interests in promoting certain sites, along with the monopoly status of a relatively small number of Internet search engines, leads to a biased set of search algorithms that privilege whiteness and discriminate against people of color, specifically women of color.

C Pam Zhang (How Much of These Hills is Gold). Both epic and intimate, blending Chinese symbolism and re-imagined history with fiercely original language and storytelling, How Much of These Hills Is Gold is a haunting adventure story, an unforgettable sibling story, and the announcement of a stunning new voice in literature. On a broad level, it explores race in an expanding country and the question of where immigrants are allowed to belong. But page by page, it’s about the memories that bind and divide families, and the yearning for home.

No loss that they won’t be attending.

    1. You are SO small minded, karma. How can you be happy about the fact thousands of students and their families have been robbed of the opportunity of hearing the voices of 2 more capitalist-hating extremists?

      1. Does anyone really believe that Google “ search algorithms privilege whiteness and discriminate against people of color, specifically women of color. “ If anything, the search algorithms favor a big government/leftist agenda. You will typically receive articles from leftist sources such as the New York Times and Washington Post on page one in response to a search but you will have to wait a few pages to get something from more conservative sources such as the New York Post or Washington Times.

      2. P. S.

Message to C Pam Zhang: No one here “hates the Chinese people but loves their products.” Here’s the truth: We aren’t crazy about the way the Chinese Communist Party enslaves billions of its own people…. and we prefer American products when we can find them in stores [which isn’t easy].

And here’s one for Safiya Noble: ”Everything in the information universe IS tilted” —yeah, tilted YOUR way. Stop with the bitching.

      3. It’s time big donors take a long look at what the 2024 version of USC is all about….

      4. The problem at USC is that the BOT and probably half of the faculty are the same like minded American hating DEI, WOKE fuckheads. The only way Folt or any of these simpletons gets axed is if the money dry’s up.

Sadly, USC is not alone in this, I saw an article about Columbia’s board makeup, nothing but woketard leftists.

And notice that most of these encampments are at schools with female President’s ???? Gee, I wonder why ?

      5. Ha! Hilarious footnote: when an MSNBC reporter asked a protesting student if she didn’t feel a little like she was robbing herself of her own tuition as a result of causing her campus to shut down, she replied “My loans are being paid by Joe Biden —I’m not losing anything.”

  4. Deijon Laffitte to Fresno State. This suggests that he may have been lacking talent and the coaches suggested that he leave to get some playing time and open up another portal slot. Evidently, the NT from Michigan State, Harmon, is down to USC and Colorado. We should win that battle.

  5. Lindsay Gottlieb is on fire !

Oregon State transfer guard Talia von Oelhoffen was one of the most clutch players of the 2023-24 season, and after taking an official visit to USC over the weekend, the coveted veteran picked the Women of Troy over Louisville, Kentucky and Colorado.

Von Oelhoffen spent four years in Corvallis, playing in 13 games as a freshman, 31 games as a second-year freshman leading the team in scoring, and playing in 26 games as a third-year sophomore. She averaged 10.7 points, five assists and 4.1 rebounds a game in 35 games last season, and it included a semifinal matchup with Stanford in the Pac-12 Tournament and an Elite Eight matchup with the eventual champion South Carolina in the NCAA tournament.

She scored 18 points in the first matchup with USC when Watkins scored a record-breaking 41 points and had six points in the second matchup of the season. She scored single-digit points in three of Oregon State’s four NCAA tournament games, but in each game, she led her team in assists.

  6. It’s beyond sad that the only coach who gets the “USC” advantage and has expanded the success of the school legacy is the former coach from Cal-Berkeley. Florida St is still an option for Derrick Harmon. First in-home visit from any coaches came from Tallahassee.
