The USC men’s track team won the NCAA indoor title today, beating out Georgia and Auburn.
It’s the first NCAA title for the men’s program since 1976 and gives them an amazing 29 titles overall, by far the most successful program in USC history. It is the first men’s indoor title since 1972.
The men’s and women’s program have combined for 32 NCAA titles. It’s the first title for USC coach Quincy Watts.
And in a bit of irony, USC beat out Georgia, which is coached by former Trojans coach Caryl Smith Gilbert.

MICH takes the series finale 11-0, but SC took 2 of 3 after starting out Big Ten play in the cellar after being swept by The Quack Attack.

SC wins track championships like clockwork every 50 years or so

We used to have great USC vs. UCLA track and field rivalries. USC repeatedly won national championships in the fifties, sixties, and seventies and sent athletes to the Olympics. But then Title IX passed about 50 years ago and scholarships and funding for men sports were transferred over to women sports. Men track, baseball and others suffered. No longer enough scholarships to field consistently competitive teams.

I’ll never forget the excitement of those 1970s dual meets between SC with Vern Wolfe and UCLA with Jim Bush as coaches with crowds of 15,000.
