USC Track And Field Wins NCAA Title With Texas A&M After Crazy Finish

What an unexpected result at the NCAA men’s track and field championships on Friday, as USC and Texas A&M shared the national championship with 41 points each. Arkansas finished third with 40 points.

Here’s the way things stood entering the final event — the 4×400 relay.

If USC had finished seventh or better in the 4×400, it wins the NCAA title by itself. But the Trojans finished eighth in the race while Texas A&M finished second, which produced a tie in the standings. If Arkansas, which finished third in the race, had been second, the Razorbacks would be NCAA champions.

The results led to the unusual tie and two teams celebrating the title. The last time that happened was 2013.

In another anomaly, USC also won a national title without having any of its athletes win an individual event.

  • This is an important fact: USC won its first men’s outdoor track and field title since 1976.

A lot of people thought USC would never win another men’s track title when the NCAA reduced teams to 12.6 scholarships while women’s teams get 18 scholarships. It’s no accident that since 1976 USC’s outdoor titles were all on the women’s side.

So it’s quite a story that the Trojans won a men’s title in the Title IX era. The last private school to win an NCAA men’s outdoor title was Stanford in 2000.

  • For all the talk about football and baseball at USC, track and field is the most successful sport by far with 33 NCAA titles. Tell that to your UCLA basketball friends who think they dominated their sport. USC coach Quincy Watts pulled off a double by winning the men’s indoor and outdoor NCAA titles. Watts won a gold medal at the 1992 Olympics in the 400 meters so it probably haunts him that USC’s 4×400 relay team faltered Friday.
  • Now for one last time: The No. 1-ranked team in the nation (USC) should not have lost to UCLA in the dual track meet last month.
  • And look who was there for the celebration.

  3. In Little League we played for the championship and had an 11-0 lead when the other team scored 11 times, and the game was called. We were co-champions but it felt like a loss. I wonder if the SC track team feels the same way today

We would not have shared the NCAA Title last night without the MASSIVE efforts of Racquil Broderick who hit a PB in the 5th round of the Discus Event and went from 7th Place to 4th Place leapfrogging a Bruin in the process. Bonus Points that were needed when half of our 4×400 relay team went down with injuries before the last event causing us to fall to 8th place. The Women of Troy will probably outscore the Men today but may not catch Georgia….

      2. We did Great today….We won a few events and scored more points than the Men which I predicted. Our prior Track Coach Carol won her first Natty with Georgia and gave a subtle dig at the SC Administration during the Awards Ceremony. We need to recruit more Field Athletes and Middle/Long Distance Runners. I hope Quincy keeps an eye on the portal as it will be opening soon. We are in Awesome Shape otherwise….

In examining this again, the shooter did not have Trump in a straight line but in fact Trump would have been a bit to the shooter’s right, explaining how the right side of Trump’s head would have been targeted. So the bullet might have missed him entirely if he hadn’t turned his head to the right and exposed his ear
