Sunday Buzz: USC Comes Within Whisker Of Winning Directors’ Cup

USC could not have come closer to winning the Directors’ Cup, which goes to the most successful athletic program in college sports. Here’s the final standings:

1. Texas – 1255.25

2. USC – 1253.75

3. Stanford – 1251

If USC’s 4×400 relay team had finished seventh instead of eighth Friday night, it wins the Directors’ Cup because it would have won the NCAA title outright. Now maybe it is unfair to focus on the track performance. If JuJu Watkins had not gotten hurt, maybe that makes a difference. Maybe another sport didn’t carry its weight (Lincoln? Lincoln?). What’s tennis (men’s and women’s) done lately?

The reason the relay team gets the focus is because it’s the final event of the season (for Texas, USC and Stanford) and they were projected to do much better than eighth in the 4×400.

The USC women’s track team finished No. 2 Saturday night but was so far behind No. 1 Georgia (73-47) that it couldn’t impact the Directors’ Cup more than it did. Georgia is coached by former USC coach Caryl Smith Gilbert, who could be a prickly figure at USC and famously did not get a raise from Mike Bohn after winning an NCAA title and departed for Athens, Ga.

      1. We had 2 last minute replacements due to injuries. One of them was the Top Ranked 200 M runner. Had the original team performed, we would have finished Top 3 at worst. We should be thankful now for at least splitting the Title. Quincy will get good publicity for this and maybe get a few Field Champions in the portal which will open soon…..

      2. We finished 2nd in the 4 x 100. We finished 8th in the 4 x 400. Our lead off runner was really struggling at the end of his leg. Add that our long jumper JC Stevenson, who finished first last year, didn’t qualify for the finals this year. Things so happen that aren’t predicted. I’m still happy with how they finished.
