You Can’t Always Judge Coaches By Awards

This is pretty funny. When John Bolton was named NCAA West Region men’s assistant coach of the year last week, he had already left the USC track and field program.

Sources said he and head coach Quincy Watts clashed during the season so he quickly departed as soon as the season ended. USC even announced another assistant had taken over Bolton’s duties a day after the Trojans returned from the NCAA championships last week. So Watts couldn’t wait to announce a replacement.

And that occurred four days before Bolton won this award. You can’t always judge things by awards. A good example is when recruiting services name recruiters of the year, as if an assistant coach is solely responsible.

Even worse nowadays, the recruiting services (and fans) are acting like general managers make-or-break a program.

In this position, he will continue to coach and develop athletes, including Olympians. His experience and success in coaching at the collegiate level, particularly with sprinters, will likely play a significant role in his new position. No word on what exactly Bolton and Watts argued about that led to Irreconcilable Differences.
