USC Ended Fiscal Year With More Than $200 Million Deficit

USC announced today it “ended FY25 with an operating deficit in excess of $200 million, higher than the $158 million deficit in FY24.”

This is what I reported a few weeks ago but USC didn’t reveal the staggering figure until after Carol Folt retired.

It also said layoffs are coming but did not include specifics.

“We need to take decisive action quickly, because the longer we wait, the more difficult the actions that will need to be taken later, and the longer faculty and staff will be working under a cloud of uncertainty and anxiety,” USC Interim President Beong-Soo Kim said.

Among the measures USC will take to reduce the deficit is “selling unused properties.”

  1. And just in case you want to scroll through the 2005 game with the domers, here is the full telecast, including the announcing team calling it “a rivalry with no comparison”, or something to that effect.

    1. I hope this year’s game ends the exact same way: Officials blow game whistle with Notre Dame ahead, are forced to put ONE second back on clock, USC scores and wins…Notre Dame players and fans go home feeling as though their hearts have been ripped out….

  2. Hard to believe that USC truly has a financial problem. A few years back, they had a huge endowment. You could operate the school on the interest and dividends on the endowment alone. Don’t even need to charge outrageous tuition.

The University of Southern California’s endowment was reported to be $8.2 billion in 2024, with ongoing efforts to grow it through diversified investments.

DON: This endowment supports various programs and initiatives at the university, ensuring long-term financial stability

  5. USC makes over 500 million yearly off of the interest and dividends on their endowment tax free but need to stop construction of the baseball field because donations have fallen off. C’mon. Well run institutions with 8.2 billion endowments should not even need fund raising campaigns and layoffs.

      1. Did they hire the Haden family? 10% administrative fee to manage a multimillion dollar charitable fund for scholarships to the poor. Pat and family made big bucks off of that one. The impoverished beneficiaries not so much.

DON: How is the boycott of Indiana in the name of Pat’s LBGTQ+ son going?

  6. I wish Rick Caruso would take a bigger role in managing the university. He had to know that Carol Folt was incompetent but signed off on her anyway. If Folt managed a funeral parlor nobody would die.

  7. Every entrepreneur businessman knows there will be some bad years intermingled with the good ones. Besides, SC incurring a deficit of nearly $400-million the past 2 years is small change compared to its multi-billion endowment

But there must be a better way to balance the books than laying off long-time employees
