USC Needs A Culture Reset

I said this morning the fact TCU had two star players play in the Alamo Bowl while a host of USC players opted out showed a difference in the culture of the programs.

Today, former USC player Marvin Powell III made this comment.

“As a culture, as a team, we are much further behind than I thought we were.”

Powell is the son of former USC All-American Marvin Powell, who is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

  1. Scott: Did Husan Longstreet suit up for the game? Did he practice? Is he going to enter the portal? I am assuming Alani Noa is gone. Looks like Joey Olsen as well. We are going to need a few tight ends.

  2. LR was supposed to take us to the “promised land” with teams that were have not been physical and never had a strong defense or a good offensive line. When USC going to ante up and send LR packing?

    1. There were only a handful of coaches with 10 year contracts when we got Riley. That was such a dumb move and I hope schools learn from this. 5 maybe 6 years should be it. If they refuse?

      1. I agree. Why would you give a coach who has NEVER won a championship a 10 year very lucrative contract? Why don’t the contracts have performance clauses?

  3. The first step in solving a problem is admitting that you have a problem. CLR doesn’t think that USC football has a problem so don’t expect any major changes with the culture of the USC program. Along with that, when something goes wrong CLR has a litany of ready made excuses que’d up to give to the media. We fans are going to have to sit here and deal with it until the end of next year when USC doesn’t make the CFP again, and he is hopefully shown the door.

      1. Someone needs to teach Lincoln a thing or two about Leibniz’ “doorless and windowless monads”…… He’s living in one…..

  4. The World is not coming to an end because USC finished 9 and 4.

Enough, we have limited years on this planet, enjoy life and stop worrying about USC football which is out of our control.

  5. what’s with all this level headed, big picture, get high on life bullsh!t?? i like my blogs like i like my women: desperate and crazy.

it don’t work without the bigoted, wild-eyed, whitebread panic-mongers! if you hippies are taking over, i’m outta here!!

on weirder note, looks like no one can stop the ultimate Aw Shucks kid, Mendoza of IU. he’s an actual goody two shoes, not a phony pretender like Tebow. this foretells a return to pure of heart, mid-west values of the Great John Wooden. the real trOxan scholars on here know that their all-time hero: Pete Carroll was an avowed disciple of Wooden’s teachings.

  7. Obviously there is zero loyalty among the players, for their supposed alma mater, other players,or coaches….it is now all about love of money…that’s it.

  8. They said we needed a culture change in the sports department, because USC had nothing but controversies with former football players in charge.

So we went and hired career administrators from outside the program. And now we have a football coach who runs the Air Raid and doesn’t care about defense, are in the Big 10, and are no longer playing Notre Dame.

So yeah Id much rather have the “scandals” and people like Mike “They are all jealous we are Trojans ” Garrett in charge than what we have now.

      1. After Bob Costas predicted Lasorda’s Dodgers would be swept [in a series they won], he asked what the players thought about his prediction. Lasorda said “to be honest, I heard a lot of “kil* Costa chants….but I don’t think they meant it.”

      2. Dear Gabby,

I don’t think we need to guess what Reggie or Mike thought about the game itself, the defense, or the result…

  9. What culture? How would you even describe SC’s culture?

I will say, in the era of NIL I think it is going to be hard to have a school culture players buy into. Do you think all these players bouncing around will have the connection to the school like Marcus Allen, Ronnie Lot, Leinart, Lendale. Guys on the sidelines decades after playing. Will these players have the reaction Irving had at the Miami game?
