Sunday Buzz: One USC Team Not Ducking Competition

USC is one of eight colleges invited to the Fiesta Bowl flag football tournament April 18-19 at Arizona State.

Georgia, Florida and Arizona State are among the other teams in the tournament.

USC has just started a flag football club team. Some would argue Lincoln Riley’s defenses play flag football the past four seasons.

  • “Last year, we were one of the most injured teams in the country,” Eric Musselman said after USC defeated Rutgers yesterday. “This year, we’re one of the most injured teams in the country.

If this is true, Musselman needs to evaluate what he is doing and what USC is doing from a sports-science perspective.

  1. Scott’s last comment is my thought exactly. Does the coach have any answers for this problem? Is it being analyzed? Are practices and exercises being evaluated? Are physical therapy experts being asked for advice? If a problem keeps repeating itself, maybe it is insanity like Einstein said to keep doing the same thing over and over again. 1. Can you imagine a coach [with the responsibility of keeping his team fit for competition] complaining they’re one of the most injured teams in the country year after year?

  2. THE FIRST TIME I MIXED VALIUM AND LIQUOR I NOTICED THAT BOTH SC AND NOTRE DAME WERE EACH PLAYING WITH 22 MEN AT THE SAME TIME. WHEN DID THEY CHANGE THE RULES I THOUGHT TO MYSELF.

  3. Musselman makes excuses every year and everywhere he has coached. Sorry, not impressed with him, or his coaching style. His teams are not fundamentally sound. Take a look at his resume what has the guy accomplished other than in the NBA D-League.

Recruit some depth- make it to the NCAAA Tournament or get rid of the guy he is way overpaid spend the money on some players rather than a coach who is paid among the top coaches in the country, and I just don’t see enough progress in year two.

Bottom line USC needs to put the pressure on both Musselman and Riley. Make the NCAA Tournament and NCAA Playoffs next year or you are gone period. Performance is still a very important part of any business contract, and if the results don’t happen it’s time to move on period. The employer needs to control how the contracts are written at the very beginning, or no job offer should be made.

    1. Really, Scott is hung up about flag football. I realize that his only sport experience was playing for the Daily Trojan flag football team against the Daily Bruins, but that is a fun game and not a sport. I believe that a girls’ flag football league has started; so, maybe Scott can report on that league.

By the way back to basketball, I happened to watch part of the Lakers vs. Knicks game last night for about five minutes and it was unwatchable. The Lakers offense is one shooter and four statue spectators; and defense is non-existent. They appear old and slow. Unfortunately, high school players see this non-teamwork basketball and think that basketball is big guys shooting layups and three point shots….no coordinated offensive plays triggered by a really good point guard and a defense that actually moves their feet and stays in front of shooters. 1. Dan, many years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Kareem. At that time, he was coaching the Lakers post players (Kwame Brown, Andrew Bynum).

He noted that at that time, the only two basketball players in the NBA who completely understood the game were Kobe and Tim Duncan. And the reasons he gave were because they were extremely intelligent and they learned basketball outside of the US. The problem was (is) AAU ball, where all they learn is how to shoot 3s and press/trap. No knowledge of half-court offense or defense.

      2. Trojan1967 thanks for sharing your conversation with Kareem. When the NBA started to allow zone defenses, I thought that the mix of man to man and zone would really help defensive schemes. But all that it has done is allow players to stand around. At least with man to man their was lots of movement on offense and defense. The men’s college game is starting to look like the NBA. Actually the women’s college game utilizes pretty good defenses…..USC allowed single digit points to Rutgers in two quarters yesterday. Thanks again for the insight. Dan, Class of 1962
